THE 4TH OF JULY IN SAMARRA, IRAQ

Just a Company of American paratroopers, a guitar plugged
into the outpost's PA system, and a whole lot of demolitions.

The drama continues.

Under pressure from the fanaticism and treachery of the Jihad, which is abetted by the peculiar manias of Liberalism, Free Speech is perishing. In Canada a sordid drama continues, with Mark Steyn actually managing to maneuver his accusers into a public confrontation — which naturally did not turn out well for these individuals [the confrontation begins about two-thirds of the way into the video].

But it probably doesn’t matter: On June 2, Mr. Steyn and the magazine that published him are compelled to answer to the charge of “flagrant Islamophobia” before another Human Rights Commission, this time in British Columbia. More trials may follow, including a federal tribunal which is said to boast a 100% conviction rate on hate speech cases.

The thing is, under the tyranny of these human rights tribunals, there really can be no defense. Steyn quotes a Canadian Justice Department summary of the situation: “The defences of truth and fair comment remain available to torts such as defamation and seditious libel, regardless of the medium in which they occur. However, … defences that may be available in tort actions are not available in cases of hate propaganda because the prohibition is concerned with adverse effects, not with intent.” Steyn comments:

The government rarely expresses it that brazenly. Especially the justice minister of a supposedly Conservative government. By the way, by “adverse effects,” they mean not anything that’s actually happened but something that might potentially theoretically hypothetically happen maybe a decade or four down the road. If you create a justice regime predicated as a point of principle on disdain for objective reality, it’s no big surprise to find perpetually aggrieved Muslim lobby groups eager to avail themselves of it — big time.

Now my view of Free Speech, admittedly, is somewhat ambivalent. As a general proposition concerning political speech, I endorse it; as an absolute proposition, with compass over anything remotely associated with human expression, I decline to endorse it, and indeed stand ready to oppose it where absolutism threatens to conjure anarchy.

The particular insanity of our day is that Liberals who tend toward the absolutist position are, it seems, sufficiently blind to the obliteration of Free Speech augured by human rights tribunals that they cannot see the flat contradiction that stares them in the face. Islam and grievance-mongering will destroy one of their most cherished principles, and our dear dear Liberals may not even notice.

...to silence, in the name of Free Speech.

On left-wing blogs, only the "moderates" call for the re-imposition of the Fairness Doctrine.

The radicals want Fox News's broadcast licenses revoked altogether, the same sort of control of the media that Chavez is doing in Venezuela.

That's on top of with the heckling, pie-throwing, and other thuggish antics whenever a conservative attempts to speak in public.

They've been taught that conservatives are evil, and hence deserving of no tolerance whatsoever.

Free speech by condor01

Very interesting story (via your video link) and what an excellent public affairs show. I really appreciated the patience of the moderator and the generous time alloted to the participants.

I can hope, perhaps in vain, that this broadcast itself is an example of the health of free speech in Canada.

No surrogates, no commercials, no dumbed down ten second sound bites. This puts the Sunday yak shows to shame.

free if it agrees with the left wing view of the world. Let's see if I can get the proper phrasing... Hmmmm. How about this: Please, please, PLEASE don't say anything that might offend someone even if what you say is true or factual and please keep your opinions to yourself (unless, of course, they agree with ours)!
That pretty much sums it up for me!! AAAUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHH!

veritas vos liberabit

The same people who would make it impossible to speak out against jihads would be the first ones to get their tongues cut out BY the jihads. Unless the jihads still needed them for "useful idiot" duty, that is.

Thank God for the First Amendment....and the Second, too.

Make that "jihadists".

There is an interview with Steyn on Milt Rosenberg's program at www.WGNRadio.com, available here

Following is the description.

April 10, 2008
NEW: This night, we welcomed one of our favorite guests and political commentators, Mark Steyn. We talked with Steyn for the full 2 hours about the latest in the Presidential campaigns, his take on the Jeremiah Wright scandal, and the release of his book America Alone into paperback. We also talk about the problem that Steyn has run into with our neighbors to the north and their Human Rights Commission, and how Steyn’s book has the potential to be banned in Canada. (4/10/08)

between China and Canada.

Let's see. They both have tribunals to impose the government's view of thought on the populace. They both have socialized healthcare.

Oh here's a difference. China doesn't depend on the US to protect it.

But Canada has better hockey!

In the "sordid drama by Flagstaff

In the "sordid drama continues" link, a responder quotes something called "the Silent Majority." No matter who wrote it, it's worth repeating.

We are told again and again by ‘experts’ and ‘talking heads’ that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace.

Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectre of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam. The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history.

It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honour kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals.

The hard quantifiable fact is that the ‘peaceful majority’ the ’silent majority’ is cowed and extraneous.

We don't necessarily want to become fanatics ourselves, but we do need to be realistic about what we're fighting. They are dedicated. They are organized. And they will fight us on every front they can open, because they've seen our propensity to get bored with extended, continuous, and widespread confrontation. (The Clintons were well aware of this phenomenon, too.)

If you don't believe me, just think about the illegal immigration problem for a few minutes. The problem has existed for many years, without abatement, and it affects every citizen in some way every day. The facts are clear, yet our politicians seem to be intent upon ignoring them, and the public seems to lose interest unless they're forced to confront those facts.

It's people like Mark Steyn who are doing that forcing. Too bad for Canada that they're excluding gadflies in favor of tsetse (sleeping sickness) flies.

Democrats: Abandoning Allies, One Country at a Time.

It's the public confrontation link above. It is quite interesting.

I did think the three Muslim law students had valid points regarding equal time in the Maclean magazine as a matter of journalistic practice though NOT as a legal mandate. Clearly, "hate speech" prohibitions are ridiculously bad.

The question I have is: what is the punishment for "promoting hate" in Canada?

Small is beautiful.

The MacLean Magazine is a... by From ME to you

privately owned publication and as such they can print anything they d**n well please. Using your argument Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker and every other 'left wing' magazine should allow equal 'time' in all of their publications.

As much as I dislike the previously mentioned publications I realize that their magazine is a product just like Coke™ and Pepsi™ and as such must cater to their customers.

(I never thought I'd be defending Time & Newsweek!! Ughhh!)
