The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Sen. George Allen (R-Virginia) raised $2,065,000 during the first quarter of 2005 for his 2006 senate campaign. That would be a little over $956 an hour for every hour over a three-month period.

Update [2005-4-18 18:19:49 by Walt]: Doverspa has located a poll for the Allen-Warner contest.

According to the Times-Dispatch, Allen's campaign manager indicated that the campaign expects to "face a self-financing multimillionaire Democrat in the general election." If you're thinking "Mark Warner," keep reading.

Former Lt. Gov. Don Beyer, the national treasurer of the Dean for President campaign, is contemplating a run for Allen's senate seat. It has long been thought that Mark Warner would be the Democratic nominee to face Allen in '06, provided that Mark Warner wants it.

Watching a contest between a Dean acolyte and Mark Warner -- if they both run -- will be very interesting. Warner supposedly represents the forward-thinking, moderate wing of the Democratic Party, while Dean (and his followers) represent a revived, intensified leftist activism. The primary fight will magnify the splits that exist within the Virginia Democratic Party.

Wait a minute by Chad Dotson

I thought only Republicans were divided in Virginia.

Mark Warner won't risk his political capital against George Allen, one of the more popular politicians Virginia has seen in some time.  Warner, who is popular himself, might win, but he might not, and he can't risk losing if he wants to run for President.

More likely, it will be Don Beyer, in which case Allen will win by a healthy margin.

One more step by Walt

I don't think Beyer will run either. He'll decide it isn't worth it.
