John Roberts -- The Nominee?

Newrooms in Washington and Senate staffers have begun pulling data on John Roberts.

Jones still appears to be in Houston.

Update [2005-7-19 18:47:20 by krempasky]: Speaking of data...

Update [2005-7-19 19:1:8 by Erick]: I'm told that Janice Rogers Brown is in D.C. and that John Roberts is out of the country. I'm also told that Roberts is filling the void left this afternoon with word that Clement was not the nominee.

Let's keep it with Roberts, not Brown. As for Jones, I want her. So many conservatives have been fixated on the Ediths over the weekend, you'd like to think there was something there.

Two things: (1)The President referred to the nominee as "he." One would think he's just using the Queen's English, but even I laugh while writing that.

(2) The White House has been cautioning that the nominee might not be with the President tonight.

Both of those point to Roberts.

ALITO by MB

What is the story on Alito?  Some from NJ who sat in on oral arguments today, say Alito was not paying attention and even turned his back at times... very unusual from him.

now that Compton has reported that Luttig has been dropped. Anyhoo, what's Roberts' data? Good guy? Stole a freight train? Originalist?

clerked under Renquist and is a strong choice for Bush.

The dems are going to hate him if that helps.

it by Darin H

means a lot to me :)

a good fight on this.

That is one thing going for the strong known conservative will do-bring the fight to the dems, but if the WH backs him/her up, and the GOP sticks to their guns and practices true party discipline this might in the end be fun to watch.

He'd make a good Chief.

So does this mean Dubya is saving the female or minority pick for Rehnquist?

And who would that be?

...then Bush is fulfilling his pledge AND preparing for 2006 and 2008. He's concerned about keeping the House in our hands and making sure that the Senate doesn't go anywhere. Getting and keeping the base jazzed is the only way to make sure that that happens.

Pubbies want Originalists on the bench. Bush and Rove know this. Midway through this hockey game, a Confirmation Hearing has broken out....

Janice Rogers Brown? by Section9

One can only hope....

Yes! by Neil Stevens

Roberts was one of my three picks, so I know I'd be pleased with him.

Plus, as if we needed to see it, it'd be yet another instance of political courage from  Bush.  Ignoring the identity politics would be funny.

Reminds me of that humor piece in the diaries recently.  "Will you fire Karl Rove?  No.  Confirm John Bolton."  Adding Roberts to that demand would be fantastic.

is next.

I am betting Owens or Jones for the female (I think Clement is out, or at least I hope she is).

Almost any of the hispanics mentioned would also come into play, but I think Bush isn't going to go for a Gonzalez, if he is going to go Texas cronyism, I think he goes Owen-she would be better received by the base, although dems in the senate and NARAL would go into convlusions.

President Bush should go with John Roberts; he's a slightly smoother version of Luttig. Save Michael Luttig for replacing Rehnquist and Edith Jones for when Ginsburg quits; Janice Rogers Brown would be a good replacement for Stevens. Judge John Roberts clerked for Rehnquist and is about as reliable as they get as far as his conservative credentials are concerned.

I think he would be a good choice, but Roberts is a very good choice, and I would be fine with Brown, but I suspect he goes for Jones or more likely Owen for a female pick.

There is also Garza and Alito.

of the NARAL, PFAW, DNC smear campaign.

"And so, Judge Roberts, is it true that you once thought about subscribing to Southern Partisan Magazine?"

"Are you, or have you ever been, a "Practicing Christian!", Judge Roberts!"

Great Roberts Profile by unlearned

One of the best articles written on Roberts is on law.com.  He's hard not to like.

http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1108389946956

but he's in the Federalist Society.

Roberts to replace O'Connor.  Could Rehnquist have known this was coming?  Could it be that the chief will stay long enough to see his protege confirmed and then resign his position?

If Clement was in the top three, might we see her again when Rehnquist steps down?

just a hunch.  i still say jones, maybe brown.

I haven't seen anything that indicates to the contrary.

Roberts unlikely by Aurel Stein

Roberts is in London

ternationalTrade.pdf

It would be very unusual and ineffective not to have Roberts there -- it would infinitely strengthen the hands of those who are saying Bush is making the announcement NOW to get attention off Rove.

From the looks of it, Roberts would be back in DC this weekend. Why not wait till Monday if it's him?

All signs point to.......no one.....

I have seen talk (here mostly of him replacing Renquist as CJ-and he may be more palatable than Thomas or Scalia).

Granted that presumes he is the nominee.

Not Jones by Aurel Stein

It's also not Edith Jones and it's not Priscilla Owen...

It's hard to imagine that Bush is willing to nominate a male rather than a woman, I'd like to have a conservative woman on the Court.  It wouldn't sit very well with Democrats, which is what I want really...anything that makes them very uncomfortable, I'm all for it.

But this is an exciting time...why?  Because Three Musketeers are about to get another Musketeer!  ;)

short list?

It appears we are running out of nominees.

Back to Garza or Alito maybe?  Anyone floated them yet?

If Roberts is the choice he could certainly have hopped on a jet this morning and flown back to DC. He is teaching that class in conjunction with Judge Stanceu

Ted Olson by New World Man

lives in Washington!

I'm just saying.

i know.... by iamright

IT'S GONZALES! ;)

Roberts would be an easier confirmation than Edith Jones and Janice Rogers Brown

I believe Roberts would ultimately get confirmed, and probably would get 80+ votes on the floor of the Senate, but only after a very bitter battle and certainly complaints from the left and the MSM that it should be a Woman's seat

if it is gonzales by iamright

i'll drink a bottle of patron silver tequila tonight and cry myself a river.

think anyone is going to be easy, especially if they even remotely appear to have a pro life record.

There is certainly easier, but I think easy is out, if Bush is going to go for a bonafide conservative originalist nominee.

I think Roberts would be easier than some others, but he has some pretty clear pro life stances that will make him a huge target of the pro choice interest groups and dems.

Stop! Just, stop.... by Section9

the madness!

Ann Coulter! Take it to the bank! I have it from a VERY reliable source.....

Joseph C. Wilson, take a bow!

Is it Roberts ? by The Populist

While Roberts is well respected across the political aisle, he hasn't been on the bench long enough to know what his judicial philosophy will be over the long term. True, Roberts is a better choice than Clement, but I don't like the idea of picking an "unproven" nominee, no matter how brilliant that nominee might have been as a lawyer.

Furthermore, the repubs have 55 senate seats, there is no reason not to go with a justice with a long record, ie,,Luttig or Jones. I believe Roberts would be a better political choice if the repubs were in the minority in the senate but not now. Lets see how he does in a lower court for a few more years before we proclaim him an "originalist".

It's not Gonzalez. by Section9

Bush understands that this is a Base issue. He needs the base jazzed for midterms, and must have the SCOTUS turned by Orignialist justices that are recognized by the Base as Originalists.

This is why we voted for the guy, aside from the GWOT. The Donks have yet to figure this out. I would not be surprised to see him walk down the aisle with Brown tonight. Not at all.
