Roy Blunt Announces He Has Lost<br>And A Warning Sign For His Congressional Supporters

In the race for Republican Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, Roy Blunt has just announced he is defeated. There can be no other explanation for sending out the following very lame press release:

House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) today announced that he has the support of more than the 117 Members of the House Republican Conference required to win the post of House Majority Leader.

"I've counted a lot of votes in my seven years in the Whip's office, and this was a well-fought fight on all sides," Blunt said. "John Boehner is a great congressman and a good friend. My friend John Shadegg is bringing an important focus to the final days of this race. I look forward to working with both of them as we achieve great results for the American people."

"As I've talked with Members of our conference this week, we've discussed our party's vision for a freer, safer and more prosperous America," Blunt continued. "Our reform-minded majority will regain the trust of the American people and promote the common sense principles of smarter, not bigger government that is accountable to the people who send us here."

"The healthy debate we're having this month will strengthen us," Blunt concluded.

Show us your names Congressman. Show us your names. For what it is worth, there are five people listed here as supporting you who are not. Voting is by secret ballot, which is not helpful to Congressman Blunt.

It should also be worth noting for Roy Blunt's supporters that the conservative tide has clearly shifted. National Review, Human Events, Club for Growth, RedState, and many, many Republican bloggers have endorsed John Shadegg. These are opinion leaders on the conservative end of the Republican spectrum a/k/a the base. That they are not supporting Roy Blunt should be a warning sign that the status quo has become unacceptable and Roy Blunt represents the status quo.

It is time for those who have sided with Roy Blunt to think again.

Who are the 5? by TopNotch

Who are the five members who Blunt has listed but who arent with them??

Great scoop!

I just saw this [disheartening] news item at Save the GOP, but I hadn't thought of it in the way you describe here at RedState. I saw that the actual vote will be taken on February 2nd, so we still have some time to do something. Thanks for your guys' coverage of this race.

Visit me on the web.

A new post on the Hotline's terrific blog "On Call" details that Roy Blunt may be losing support from RSC members who are going back home to John Shadegg.  If this is true, it's heartening news.  We need a fresh face in leadership and someone who will steer the ship back towards conservative ideals instead of K-Street pragmatism.

Saw the chris wallace fox news sunday segment. was nice that shadegg was doing from outside of washington.  wallace really took a knife too all candidates and tried to draw some blood on shadegg on links and $ to abramoff (which I wasnt aware of).

that said he hit blunt on phillip morris and boehner on passing checks on floor of house.

ummm, where is pence again :) bring 'em back in.  we may need him.

numberwise, what has changed in race?  anyone else public for shadegg and who is peeling from others.  post above seems to suggest, but I cant find on hotline or others.

any insight?

Hardly a concession... by scornedpundit

I didn't take Blunt's statement as a sign of defeat  at all.  I think people recognize his tenure as a leader in the House and for the party.

however, with all this new discussion and hubbub about Shadegg, if I were Boehner, I might start considering stepping out of the race as Blunt's vote pledges keep increasing and more shadegg supporters surface.

just my 2 cents.

Serious Action by TopNotch

great point.  That's gonna be where the serious news and action is going down in the next few days.  As and if shadegg picks up support I can imagine the pressure on Boehner to bow out is only going to increase.  That is one way the conservative blogosphere could create some pressure on Boehner and add some more help to Shadegg's efforts.
