Liberman on the floor now...he sang Judge Alito's praises for his intellect, ability, integrity and experience but said that he is not entitled to a lifetime tenure on the Supreme Court because of his "judicial philosophy."

Translation by Thomas

he sang Judge Alito's praises for his intellect, ability, integrity and experience but said that he is not entitled to a lifetime tenure on the Supreme Court because of his "judicial philosophy."

Easily rendered as:

I am scared out of my damned mind of a primary challenge.

exactly what I was thinking.

But as long as he votes for cloture, I honestly don't care at this point.

Lieberman pandering to the base by NotSoBlueStater

Has become a daily event.  And we thought he was a man of principles...

No, we didn't by TPetey

Lieberman by Steve Z

Lieberman IS part of the Gang of 14, although probably one of its more unreliable Democrats. Will he vote cloture, believing this NOT to be an "extraordinary circumstance"?

If he votes for cloture, along with Landrieu, Ben Nelson, Byrd, Johnson, and maybe a few other Democrats, we don't really need his vote on the Senate floor.

If he votes for cloture and then against Alito, he would be essentially playing both sides against the middle. Not an obstructionist, but still a social liberal, even if he is a hawk in Iraq. He might be too afraid of a challenge in the Dem primary to actually vote FOR Alito, but hopefully he will respect the Gang of 14 promise not to filibuster.

So True by rchdmess

We also remember Sen. Lieberman stating (with a straight face) that Democrats were not trying to stop the military from voting in Florida. Sure, Joe.

Easily rendered as: I am scared out of my damned mind of a primary challenge.

You know, I'm just sick enough to hope that the Dkurse Lefties take Lieberman out in the primary.

One less voice like Lieberman's among the Dems puts them that much closer to the unelectable fringe...  ;)

Byrd will vote YES by Drgrishka

That's 60 votes against a filibuster.  The end.

Let's learn to say Justice Alito!  Woo-hoo.

Oh, and he ripped Kennedy a new one for his "disgraceful" behavior.

Not Kosher But.... by rightward ken

Lieberman is basically devoid of principles on ANY issue other than national security. Gang of 14 or not, there is no way he will vote for cloture.

Still, there is his stand on Iraq. When it comes to Dems, I take the position that Murray had about Ted Baxter on the Mary Tyler Moore show: "If a pig flies, you don't criticize it because it was only in the air for five minutes."

Uncritical by rchdmess

You don't want to criticize it for flying, but you might want to criticize which side of the fence it landed on. If it's yours, you might not want to publicly recognize that the pig is on your side.

remember, for all of Chaffees faults, he's no Lieberman.  And if Chaffee votes no on the vote but yes on cloture, now that we don't need his vote, God Bless him.

He stuck it out on Bolton when he could have sunk him, keep that in mind also.

'nuff said

I honestly thought he had more sense.

Joe's playing it safe. by Smoking Monkey

This was a no-brainer for Joe. Alito's going to be confirmed anyway, so it gives Joe an easy way to eliminate an issue during the primary and keep the moonbats at bay.

Disappointing, but understandable.

Not exactly true, by Jkroeber

members of my family, myself included have always voted for Joe, not because he is a Dem. but because he HAD integrity.  There is not a single Dem in the state that could beat him in a primary not a one and yet he deciede to pander.  Now the time is right to put up a moderate Republican against him and gain a seat.
