“Seriously folks - it's gameday. Get on the horn. ”

Friends,

We've been working for a long time on HR 1606 - The Online Freedom of Speech Act. It will come up for a vote on the floor of the House TOMORROW but as you read this - the campaign regulation community is hard at work - working the halls of Congress, lying about not only our bill - but "their" bill as well. And as far as their intentions go - well, I think it's fair to say that when it comes to THEM bragging about protecting free speech - they are not to be trusted.

Of all the work you've done on this issue - no day is more important that today. Start with this list. Call the Republicans that wobbled last time 1606 was on the floor. And don't stop there.

Here are the relevant points:

  • HR 1606 is a simple bill that simply puts into law the existing status quo. It preserves the system under which we operated for the 2004 elections - WHEN THERE WAS NO CORRUPTION OR SCANDAL. It's supported by bloggers left and right.
  • HR 4900 (also known as the CDT proposal) is NOT an acceptable alternative to HR 1606. It's attractive, and while complicated it has a lot to like - and we can look at it after we pass 1606 - but this is the bottom line: if HR 1606 is not passed TOMORROW, the FEC will issue regulations for politics on the internet.
  • The reformers regulators merely want to delay the process while the Commission will be forced to issue regulations.
  • This is a TINY, TINY law. It does NOT open up a gaping loophole - and you can support BCRA and still believe that this little tiny section of American politics ought to be free. (don't trust me - ask FEC Chairman Michael Toner)

Seriously folks - it's gameday. Get on the horn. If you need the views of a democrat - check Bob Bauer. He's all over it.

Update [2006-3-15 12:36:51 by krempasky]: - about an hour ago - the Chairman of the FEC announced a one-week pause in the final vote on regulations TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO HR 1606 tomorrow. It couldn't be more clear: pass HR 1606 or face regulations on the internet. Period.

Petri is my Rep by Black Oak

I sent him a letter basically saying I won't support him if he votes against this bill - which I won't.

He respond to all e-mail with snail mail - so we'll see what happens.

But we really need you to pick up the phone and call.

Petri is at 202/225-2476

Just wondering . . . by Allison Hayward

 . . . is "damn" profanity?

Now if an occasion called for profanity, this might be it!

:)

It's not by krempasky

But if I were to use it - I would be much more inclined to apply such language as a descriptive in the body of the post.

Made my calls by Steve Foley

and sent the web form!

Positive feedback from most of the reps I called!

Same here by Socrates

I especially liked using the web form Public Citizen provided.  Since I'm a private citizen, I had to alter the text quite a bit :-).

is very well organized, it would seem. That link to the phony public interest group is really eye opening.

I am writing to urge you to support H.R. 1606.  This bill will protect the free press rights of bloggers. The freedom of the press is a right guaranteed to all Americans, not just a select group.

Too many people have forgotten that the freedom of the press does not refer to a group of people called "The Press."  Rather, freedom of the press literaly refers to a printing press, access to which should not be denied to any American citizen.

Our Founding Fathers included the freedom of the press clause in the Bill of Rights specifically to protect political pamphlets (such as "Common Sense").  The British had censored the printing of such pamphlets, and our fore-fathers wanted to ensure that this would not happen in America.

How sad they would be to see today.  The Internet and Bloggers are the direct technological heirs to the printing press and the Patriot pamphelteers of the American Revolution.  The explict purpose of the proposed regulation of the Internet is to prevent American citizens from promoting their personal political views.

Bill H.R. 1606 will protect our free press rights from the encroachment of government regulation, and preserve our essential liberties. I ask you to please support this bill.

Remember Rathergate!!! by The Right Stuff

When calling Republican Congress members, be sure to remind them that bloggers exposed the lies of CBS, when it ran a fake story against President Bush 55 days before the election, WITHIN THE MCCAIN FEINGOLD 60-DAY BLACKOUT PERIOD!

The liberal MSM got caught that time, but without HR 1606, they will be free to do it again, and they will do it to ALL REPUBLICANS, not just President Bush!

OK then by Black Oak

I just did.  Course their going to "pass on" the comment to the Congressman - so we'll see what effect it has.

This post has now been topside for 4 hours, not to mention the 3 below it relate to the same topic ...

It just goes to show you that it's not only the elected elite that become obsessed with self serving purposes ..

At least at Dailykooks, where this bill would hurt Markos more then Redstate, they seem fit to still post today's happenings ..

Maybe that nut from DK, Kimberly Stone is on the right track, just WHY is Krempy so hot over this ... Is she right, that there is more for him to lose then we know about ???

Michael

Gee, Michael by krempasky

Putting aside the "Krempy" bit...how about the simple fact that we've worked on this bill for more than a year?

the DC offices of those Republicans that opposed HR 1606.  None of them were actually in their offices, most were out on the floor.  Also none of the aides that answered the phones seemed to know anything about HR 1606.  And while they all started to take a message they immediatly lost interest when they discovered I wasn't in their district.  I had to sorta force the issue saying that 1606 wasnt legislation that just effected their district and that I was calling as a Republican upset with their vote against supporting free speech on the internet.

Do you think emails might be a better method of mass contact?  HR 1606 in the subject line?  I just dont feel like I left a message thats reach who it needs to.

Called Ed Royce by cehwiedel
