Gov. Mitt Romney attended a "house party" in Cedar Rapids on May 9th. An overflow crowd of over 100 attended the event hosted by the Iowa Christian Alliance(formerly the Christian Coalition Of Iowa). The 2008 hopeful drew a warm reception and applause as he spoke of his conservative values and accomplishments in both the private and public sectors. Mitt said he will decide on a potential candidacy "very soon."

What sane Christian in their right mind would support Romney?  He is PRO-CHOICE.  He has appointed PRO-CHOICE judges in Massachusetts.  His hand picked lt. governor in massachusetts currently running to take his place is PRO-CHOICE, supports gay marriage and is as liberal as john kerry.

Furthermore, Romney has refused to use his influence to crack down on polygamists in his home state of Utah and instead just makes jokes about this abomination.  This guy has as much moral credibility as Mahmoud Ahmadinijad.

...because the knives are generally out this morning.  Bloggyhorses about polygamists are the least of our problems right now.  :|

Conservatives prove they don't need enemies.  They try to do each other in all the time.

Polygamy is no Joke by Veritas

Few issues are as talked about as "the sanctity of marriage."  Mitt Romney has tried to make a name for himself by opposing gay marriage in Massachusetts.  That doesn't take much courage knowing you don't have to run for office again and can say whatever the hell you want.  But it would take real courage to halt the spread of polygamy which is spreading all over the midwest and is particularly prevalent in his home state of Utah, which to date refuses to enforce the law against polygamists.

I think... by Moe Lane

...that you can safely assume that we've been made aware about the polygamist menace.  I mention this because you're about three posts away from being seen as the Polygamist Menace guy, thus ensuring that nobody ever bothers to read your posts again.

Throw a curve ball every so often, that's all I'm saying.

... but mine is not polygamy.  You can be sure of that.  But it is the sanctity of marriage.  I'm tired of political grandstanding on this issue.  I'm tired of seeing candidates pay lip service to gain votes, which is exactly what Romney is doing.  My ideal candidate would do the following:

1)Support a state wide AND constitutional amendment protecting the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.

2)End no fault, quickie divorces.  Nationwide candidates should begin to put a stigma on divorce as we had in the fifties.

3)Prosecute polygamists to the full extent of the law.

I'm tired of talk about the "sanctity of marriage."  I want action.  And if you aren't prepared to take action then don't pander to me and treat me like a fool, as Romney is doing now (and McCain I might say as well, as much as I love the guy.)

"and treat me like a fool"

Your doing a pretty good job of this yourself.

"Support a state wide AND constitutional amendment protecting the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman."

Which Romney does.

"End no fault, quickie divorces."

If the US is so divided on abortion, how do you think they are going to feel about getting rid of no fault divorces?

"Nationwide candidates should begin to put a stigma"

How is that in the scope of what politicians can do? Maybe we can create another federal department devoted to shaming people. I was under the impression that it was my responsibility to educate those around me on the problems with divorce.

"Prosecute polygamists to the full extent of the law."

Marriage is by and large a state issue. Let the politicians in the Midwest/West states deal with the issue  (which they are).

"Mitt Romney has tried to make a name for himself by opposing gay marriage in Massachusetts."

Isn't this the "action" that you want to see?

"That doesn't take much courage knowing you don't have to run for office again and can say whatever the hell you want."

It seems you just want a reason to disregard him.

"But it would take real courage to halt the spread of polygamy"

Is there polygamy in Massachusetts? How exactly would the Gov. of Mass. stop polygamy that isn't in his state (his scope of power)?

"is particularly prevalent in his home state of Utah"

Utah isn't his home state. He has lived in Mass. for most of his adult life and was born in Michigan. From what I can tell he has lived in Utah twice. Once at BYU and then when he was running the Olympics.

Quick question... by birdmojo

"Nationwide candidates should begin to put a stigma on divorce as we had in the fifties."

Exactly HOW would a candidate do this?

Campaign commercials? "I can't believe that Bob and Betty got a divorce. Truly they are immoral people. We probably shouldn't talk to them anymore. Make sure the kids don't play with their kids." "I'm Joe Candidate, and I approve this message."

If anything, this is where the Church needs to get involved, not the government. You know when thoughtless, shallow people think that they're making some important point when they say "you can't legislate morality!!!", odds are, they're talking about stuff like this (rather than legislating against assault or grand theft).

It might also help to have candidates who are as likely to still be on Marriage #1 (as opposed to it being a toss-up whether or not they are).

Polygamy by bjt

Most polygamists live in Colorado City, ARIZONA.  Just because Romney is a Latter-day Saint doesn't mean he needs to chime in over an issue relating to a different sect (they aren't latter-day saints) and in a state far away.  Where is John McCain on this issue, and who cares?  None of them have jurisdiction.  The state of Arizona needs to worry about this.

Also, when did polygamy become an abomination?  Honestly, I am not pro-polygamy, but I've read the bible and see many old testament profets who practiced it and no mention in the new testament against it.  I'm certainly no bible scholar.  I honestly would just like to know the scriptures that turned it into an abomination, from a Christian point of view.  I personally think it is not a good thing, based on my own views of the world, and I know it is illegal... I just don't understand the religious idea that it is an abomination, which is what you are implying.

Thanks.

At Monday's event Romney made it loud & clear that he's "Pro Life."

The real question for most of us Christians who see social issues as a big deal will be:

  1. Will this candidate pick judges who will stick to the law
  2. Does candidate support an ammendment banning gay marriage

For me, I'm actually much more focused on #1 than on #2 and I think that I'm very confident in Romney on both.

McCain? Sorry.  I think he's going to put some moderates in so his campaign finance stuff sticks around.

This Veritas person isn't serious, move on.....

(s)he obviously knows nothing factual about Romney, who is one of the strongest pro-life, pro-traditional marriage major conservative politicians in the country.

Romney was born and raised in Michigan where his father was governor.  Utah is not his home state.  He has lived most of his career in Mass.  Inform yourself properly on Romney @ http://iowansforromney.blogspot.com/

States rights? by Nichols02

what happened to the conservative plank of states rights?  why all the federal laws?

From what I've heard of Romney's record, he is a bonafide conservative. I'm no gambler, but I just don't see McCain winning the nomination in 2008. I believe Romney or Allen will emerge as the "McCain alternative", and win the GOP nomination.
