Time to pull out of Wisconsin

By crosspatch Posted in Comments (150) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

From the diaries...

There were 28 shootings this past weekend in Milwaukee.  After 175 years of occupation, we are seemingly unable to extract ourselves from the quagmire that apparently is Wisconsin.  I say it is time America cut its losses and pulled out of Wisconsin NOW.  We currently have over 7000 Army National Guard troops based there yet there seems to be no end to the carnage.

Please join me in writing to Rep. Jack Murtha to get this terrible situation the attention it deserves.  15 in Haditha is nothing compared to the horrors perpetrated month after month after month after month in Wisconsin. It's time we brought our people home.

I tossed in Oki because that's where Murtha wants to send the "Iraq Rapid Reaction Force".

Bottom line, the Marines are moving out of Oki and likely relocating most of the 31st MEU to Guam.  No "firm as jello" timetable yet.

Yes, quite right. by Socrates

A redeployment is much preferable to a withdrawal.  And if the situation worsens, we can always go back in, err, re-redeploy.

Our presence in Wisconsin has never been about cheese.  Or at least, the flow of cheese has never been our sole objective there.

No, Operation Wisconsin Freedom is about creating a democracy where there has been none. It is about the human rights of Wisconsinners, such as getting lathered up and driving around on a snowmobile.  Year round.

Despite what you might hear in the MSM, our presence has been largely welcomed by the majority of people in Wisconsin.  Only a few in the larger population centers of Madison and Milwaukee have complained, and that chiefly because the local government wasn't receiving enough foreign aid from Washington.

I believe we should stay in Wisconsin.  There is enough cheese money to rebuild their devastated infrastructure, now that it's not being used in the "Food for Oil" program.

And in other good news, Brett Favre is going to play another year.  Can we do less?

After the UN gets involved by E Pluribus Unum

This has been and always will be about the cheese any attempt to say otherwise is just intellectually dishonest.

You should be ashamed of yourself!!!

I would agree, but ... by crosspatch

Last year there was an intensive search for Abu Ruta Baga al Cumberlandi in the Western part of the state.  Word is that he left the area over the winter but is expected to return as he has roots in that area.

So is it all about the cheese?  Maybe not.  In fact, I would propose that in the roughly 175 years that we have been there, we have lost sight of our original goals.  If you were to ask someone why we are there now they would probably look at you with a vacant stare like you are crazy or something.

If we are going to stay, we should clearly define our goals and expections and then create a definate timetable for withdrawal.

I simply refuse by Socrates

to bow down to the conspiracy theorists who say Wisconsin is all about cheese.  I've spent quite a bit of time in Wisconsin, and in fact I was born there.  Pulling out now is just bad policy.

And until they are ready to stand up and tackle these problems on their own, we shouldn't continue to act as an enabler.  If they won't stand up, we should still stand down!  Where's Murtha?  This is BIG!

See, the truth is that things in Wisconsin are not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion.  The American public is way ahead of us.   The United States and National Guard troops have done all they can in Wisconsin, but it is time for a change in direction.  Our police are suffering.  The future of our country is at risk.  We can not continue on the present course.   It is evident that continued civic action in Wisconsin is not in the best interest of the United States of America, the people of Wisconsin or the Great Lakes Region.

What about the Fromago Republic of Minnesota next door?  Don't we worry that now we've created a power vacuum in the region Fitz Mondale will come charging across the border and make Wisconsin into a fundamentalist state?

While all of you concern yourselves with the cheese issue in Wisconsin, you keep forgetting that the state is also known for its BALONEY!

Humor deficient me? by wealthofnations

Although I understand the basis for this diary, I don't find it amusing.  Yes, I know this won't make me popular here, but I call 'em like I see 'em.  Let me explain my reaction...

This Memorial Day gave me opportunity to think about the bravery and patriotic values of our men and women in uniform.  Their service is made more poignant by the 3,000 or so deaths and upwards of 15,000 severe injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Don't get me wrong -- these numbers do not signify anything about the value of our cause, good or bad -- death and injury is what our fighting men and women have always faced.

I just have a hard time comparing the hardships of combat in Iraq with life in Milwaukee.  Maybe it makes me humorless, but I feel any such comparison, no matter how well-intentioned, demeans the sacrifice of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It's about Murtha by crosspatch

And to place the horror of Haditha in perspective with the unfortunate horrors that we face every day.  Is the answer to run away?  Apparently so for Jack Murtha.  Running away fixes the problem according to his logic.  It won't stop people from dying and it won't stop people from murdering.  The simple sad fact is that in this world you can find murderers anywhere and until the facts are in, I am not prepared to judge.  But I do know in my heart of hearts that running away isn't going to solve anything.

If the answer to terrible events such as Haditha is to run away then maybe we should apply that very same logic in, say, Wisconsin where some horrible things happened last weekend.  The logic becomes exposed for the idiocy that it is when you change the venue.

Pretty soon there is noplace left to run from.  As many have pointed out here ... run to where?  And then what happens when the same problems happen again? Do you run away some more?

When all the running away is done and you are left with only the ground you stand on, what then?

Time for a good old fashioned belly-painting I suppose.  Yellow ... applied liberally.

My advice... by Leon H Wolf

Heed your warnings. Blam.

In the far north. We call them Outhouses!

It is like an old Monty Python movie.  Murtha understands that running away taunts the Republicans so he continues to taunt them by running away some more. But maybe now he has come to the point in the script where he can wield the Holy Hand Grenade of Haditha.

Whatever, the man is a buffoon.

Oh, and after watching some clips of congressional hearings on TV today, I think there might be a certain Republican to add to the buffoon list (albeit on a completely different topic of discussion). It appears that idiocy is an equal opportunity condition.

That's exactly the opening he'd love to have!

Bad comparison by SpiritualLefty

Homicide Rate in New England, about 2.4 per 100,000 people per year.

Iraq has a population of around 29 million, so a similar homicide rate would result in 696 deaths per year. Unless my math is wrong, which is possible, you've not got a good comparison on your hands, there.

New York has probably about twice the murder rate, but that still puts you WAY off the Iraq numbers.

I lived in Milwaukee for years, and now live only 20 minutes away. What is amazing is how the city and state governments consider murder an inconvience and a distraction to the REAL buisness of government, doing whatever it can to chase existing jobs out of state, and making sure no other companies will come here, providing cut rate mortages to illegal aliens, (and then complaining that Bush won't control the border), and vetoing legislation requiring proof of citizenship to collect state aid.

If the GOP Congress had any brains and guts, neither of which has been present since 1994-96, they'd be pushing legislation to make American cities "as safe as Iraq".

Pitch the immigration bill, pitch everything else and demand action be taken to lower the violent death rates in America's urban areas to rates lower than Iraq. Cite the statistics, again and again and again and again. Point out every day that every one of these urban areas with violent death rates higher than Iraq; Detroit, Atlanta, DC and the rest are run by a monopoly of Democrats. Tell America, "if you like what the Democrats have done for the cities they run, you'll love what they'll do for the entire country if you put them in power".

It should have been the defense to Katrina all along, "well, when a hurricane hits a third world country, which is what you have in New Orleans, Detroit, DC and the rest, this is what you get. The hurricane actually landed Mississippi, like the three hurricanes that landed in Florida the previous two years, but sense those states are run by Republicans it was handled".

Say it, "John Edwards was right, there are two Americas and the one ran by the Democrats is the third world, unless you're a college professor, Hollywood actor or run of the mill gadfly." If only Lee Atwater were still alive, someone would say it at the highest level of the party, rather than all this "new tone" pap which is getting us no where fast.

The solution: by crosspatch

We should begin an immediate and complete evacuation of Wisconsin.  After several minutes of intensive research, I have come to the conclusion that there is really no good reason for people to be living there in the first place.

The primary product of Wisconsin is cold.  And lots of it.  The cold is sent to Chicago and from there it is distributed across the Midwest all the way to the Eastern seaboard.  While it is seasonal in nature, it has a certain chilling effect that is undeniable.

While opposition leaders are worried that this evacuation will result in a vacuum that could allow certain Minnesota elements to gain a foothold, all agree that steps could be taken to mitigate this possible outcome.

One thing is certain, with the complete evacuation of everyone from Wisconsin, there would be a 100% assurance that the violence would stop and that is what is most important at this stage.  Our attempts to peacefully occupy Wisconsin has failed and this is really the only strategy that seems to hold any promise.

In order to prevent infiltration from the West, all breweries will be destroyed and all stocks of beer destroyed at the outset of the evacuation.  This also provides additional incentive for the population to migrate.

As for a destination for the displaced population, careful consideration must be given as to locations that could absorb an estimated 5.5 Million new citizens.  An exchange deal with Mexico is said to be in the works which should result in a 2:1 exchange rate of two Mexican citizens for each Wisconsin refugee.  According to my dinner napkin calculations, this should work out about right and will have the added benefit of increasing brewery investment in Mexico.

Details are still to be worked out concerning the disposition of dairy herds but there have been suggestions floated to the Minnesota Dairy Farmers Association of working a deal to trade the herds in exchange for a security fence along the Minnesota/Wisconsin border.

Overall, congressional sources say this appears to be our last best hope of ending the violence in Wisconsin.

Frankly, with all the debate about immigration I find the lack of assimilation in WI appalling. The failure of Northern Europeans and Scandinavians to adopt our culture provides a breeding ground for their subversive alternative ethos. One needs only to look at the evident signs such as proliferation of food choices like "Brats", take home pizza you cook yourself (what kind of people own a pizza stone?) and substantial consumption of beverages such as beer. They have also decimated our language by generous use of words such as "bubbler" (who actually knows what that means?) and vulgarities such as "cripes".

I say run! Run for your lives and cede Wisconsin to Canada, now.

Debbie Stabenow and Michael Moore need to be deposed from power, I think.

Sorry to weigh in with a serious post but:

I don't think Murtha's position is so hard to understand.  It isn't a position of cowardess. It's a position of concern for the well-being of our troops.  The massacre was a result of mental instability on the part of troops who have been depoloyed for too long with no end in sight.  So to Murtha's mind there are 2 clear solutions.

  1. Ramp up troop numbers and relieve the troops who have been put under tremendous strain, or...
  2. Come home. Because leaving an insuficiant number of troops in the field for too long means this kind of horror will only increase.

Since President Bush has no intention of sending more troops to Iraq, Murtha thinks the only viable option left to us in order to spare the troops and the Iraqi's more Hadithas is to pull them out now.

I don't know if I agree but in all honesty his line of reasoning is not that hard to follow and if you come away with the conclusion that he wants to cut and run because he is a weak-minded liberal, I can only pity the obtuseness of that opinion.
