Progress in Muthanna

By Dan McLaughlin Posted in Comments (8) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

Press release I just received via email from CENTCOM:

Iraq witnessed a historic event today with the transfer of security responsibility in Muthanna Province from the Multi-National Force - Iraq (MNF-I) to the Provincial Governor and civilian-controlled Iraqi Security Forces. The handover represents a milestone in the successful development of Iraq's capability to govern and protect itself as a sovereign and democratic nation. Muthanna is the first of Iraq's 18 provinces to be designated for such a transition.

As Prime Minister Maliki announced on June 19, 2006, the joint decision between the Iraqi government and MNF-I to hand over security responsibility is the result of Muthanna's demonstrated abilities to take the lead in managing its own security and governance duties at the provincial level.

+++

Australian, Japanese, and the United Kingdom forces have assisted Muthanna authorities as models of international cooperation, providing economic and humanitarian assistance as well as security and stability.

All to the good. More remains to be done, of course, but progress continues to move in our direction and against the enemy.

This is a big story. by Mark Kilmer

This is the endgame of which the President has been talking.  It shows what can and will be done.  We must not overemphasize this, squealing victory whoops like David Corn would have if there had been a Rove indictment in the Joe Wilson scandal"e;, but we should recognize what this is.  It's happening.

The Democrats, if they find they cannot ignore this, are waiting for Joe Biden's pronouncement.  If he condemns it, the will also; if Joe Biden claims credit, which is likely, they will credit themselves.

I'm now waiting by Socrates

with bemused interest for the Democrats to take credit for this first step in our redeployment.  "The President is finally yielding to the wise voices rising up in courageous dissent."

Or else they will collectively realize that this has been the plan all along ... yes, I believe they will now unite behind the Commander in Chief.

I guess any progress in Iraq is good news. Just to keep things in perspective, Al Muthanna province only had 1,150 coalition forces and accounted for only 6 of the 2,772 casualties over the last three years. Except for the northern provences under Kurdish control, one of the quietest places in Iraq.

Oh Fountain of Knowledge! How could you think that the D's would ever unite behing W?

He's our very own Emmanuel Goldstein, Enemy of the People, object of the Democrat/Liberal daily 2 Minutes Hate.

More likely, They'll put that disgrace to the Marine Corps John Murtha up and he'll say "I put the pressure on the President to begin to make these decisions".

If I could get close enough to him I'd spit in his eye.

Okay by streiff

so what?

You're acting like it is bad that there are quiet provinces.

Good news to hear by Darin H

on this rather down day. Seems to me that we are starting to step down as the Iraqis are starting to step up.

That's why it's going first by Dan McLaughlin

Gotta start somewhere.  Building blocks.
