Who Is Not In This Picture?

the corollary to "if you can do it, it ain't bragging"

US 4x100 Relay Team

The correct answer is: the French 4×100 Relay Team.

The Americans’ relay victory was all the more sweet considering the way France declared itself the favorite prior to the Olympics. The Frenchmen weren’t shy about repeating it either. In a news conference prior to the start of the Games, Bernard, who boasts a tattoo of a shark on his abdomen [Ed. Note: WTF?], was asked what he thought about his country’s chances against the United States.

“The Americans?” Bernard said. “We will smash them.”

Several of Bernard’s teammates followed his lead, even going to far as to suggest that the Americans were scared of the French.

“This morning, Bob (Bowman) had said the French was saying some stuff, talking a little bit of trash,” Phelps said. “It fired me up more than anything else. I told Garret, and he said ‘You know what?’ We’re going to let our swimming do the talking.”

Memo to Alain “the Guppy” Bernard: cross cultural communications, in this case between a culture of “winners” and a culture of “losers”, is fraught with peril. The idea behind “trash talk” is not self-beclowning.

Because the team itself is trying to help Phelps break Mark Spitz record, the semi-final race was swum by a different group of swimmers. Only the anchor of the relay swam in both races. When these guys set the world record, they were breaking the world record set by the B team the previous day in the semi-finals.

The timing that Phelps is undergoing for this attempt is insane. He had to qualify for the 200M freestyle, but not by too much to save energy for this race, which was going to occur 1 hour later. As it turns out, his lead and the anchor leg were the differences between a record, and watching the French make fools of themselves.

to the Australian who swam the first leg.

The US didn’t just beat the WR set a short time before – they destroyed it by 4 seconds.

is if the Obuffoon had been on the losing team. Wonder if he can swim without water wings?

that I turned to the Olympics in time to catch this race. I thought it was lost when the kid in the third leg lost the lead to the French swimmer. I was cheering so loudly by the end of the race that my husband, who is boycotting all things Olympic, came in to see what the hell. Even he was excited to see the outcome.

Way to go guys, you have made us so proud.
    Go USA!

that halfway through NBC didn’t insert a commercial break. “We’ll return for the conclusion of this race after a few messages from the sponsors who made this broadcast possible.”

To see that touch of the wall was one of the best moments this commentator has ever seen in sports. Sorry for the patriotism, but let them “the French” eat cake.
