I’ve spent most of the morning in a cold, damp, icy in places attic replacing a dead exhaust fan for the hall bathroom. Wouldn’t have cared and wouldn’t have done it in this weather except I have both boys home and they like to take long, hot showers. You can’t have a house full of steam when it is ten or fifteen degrees outside; all your windows fog and ice up, you get ice in your attic, all around your light fixtures and outless. You’ll learn all about vapor barriers and vapor pressure.

So, Nutone doesn’t make the model I have to replace anymore and there are no parts for it either where I bought it or at Home Depot or any other store in town. The “NEW” model has exactly the same functions and exactly the same technology, but everything about it is a different size and arranged differently. All of it is obviously changes they made to first make you buy a whole new unit and second to make that new unit much cheaper to make while keeping it at about the same price point. I HATE this about American manufacturing; changes purely and simply to make you buy something new! I would buy the parts. I would pay a premium price for the parts if that’s what it took to avoid completely re-doing the whole install. Didn’t anyone ever broach the notion of backwards compatability to the MBAs and other geniuses that run Nutone? I understand why things sometimes can’t be backwards compatible when there is a whole new technology involved, but we’re talking 19th Century technology both in the old one and the replacement.

Anyway, all the attic work is done except a final button up once I make sure it all works right and I’m taking a lunch break and unkinking my aging body from hours lying on my side with six inches of headroom and working one-handed. A couple of hours and it will all be done and I can have Christmas in Peace – maybe.

The whole schtupping idea is the only thing that has ever made me feel even remotely sorry for Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.

It seems simple to me. With all this unemployment, you should at least pick someone who is unemployed and looking for a job. Just make the Democrat Senate seats a welfare job, getting some folks off the unemployment line. I mean, they could use the money. Why give a job to someone who has money in the bank? Think of it as redistribution of power, from the haves to the have-nots. Isn’t this a part of the trickle-up economics that the left talks about.

Another thought: If Franken loses in Minnesota, can Blago give him the Illinois seat, or Paterson the NY seat?

(CNN) — Big sections in the heart of Washington, D.C. will be converted into giant parking lots next month, with District officials are now planning to allow as many as 10,000 charter buses — carrying an estimated 200,000 passengers — to park in the city itself for the presidential inauguration, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

Nearly all curbside parking in a massive chunk of the downtown area, and near Union Station, will be reserved for city and charter buses and official vehicles, with the exception of some residential areas. Most of the blocks between 11th and 21st streets, and from K through P streets, will be affected. Cars parked in the area without permission after midnight on January 20 will be towed.

I’m thinking that all it would take is for some nasty people to replace a few of those buses with buses filled with explosives to cause the whole inauguration to be No Fun for everyone. Or maybe I’m just thinking too much like the Joker after rewatching The Dark Knight recently.
