The Administration’s mismanagement of the economy continues to take a heavy toll. In August the economy lost 216,000 jobs, roughly equivalent to the population of Reno, NV, just in case Harry Reid is interested. Over 5 million Americans had been out of work for over 6 months. Over 9 million were working at part time jobs because that was all they could get. Another three-quarters of a million were no longer bothering looking work. If workers who have accepted part time employment and discouraged workers were included with the unemployed, the unemployed rate would now be in Jimmy Carter country at 16.8%.
Speaking of Hope and Change, the Change came through in August with average hourly wages increasing by six cents, or $124.80 a year. Woo hoo, time to party like it was 1979.

Depression is a disease, streiff.
Loren Heal (Diary) Friday, September 4th at 11:27AM EST (link)But I think he has a right to be depressed, given the devastation his fantasies are causing the country, given his polling numbers, and given the number of people who are turning out at the Tea Parties and town halls to blister his allies.
I mean, he’s losing David Brooks.
So yeah, he should be depressed.

Adjusted July numbers
Thomas_Hauber Friday, September 4th at 12:36PM EST (link)Does anyone know what the adjustment was for July’s unemployment rate?
Found it
Thomas_Hauber Friday, September 4th at 12:43PM EST (link)I answered my own question. Took me awhile, but I was finally able to find the BLS report:

Corrections?
1stRichard (Diary) Friday, September 4th at 1:25PM EST (link)Count those collecting, no longer bothering looking work, part time employment underemployed, and factor in government employed. Could it be true that right now we have almost half the people supporting the other half?
What percentage of the population is government employed or on government entitlement?
Using the employment data link provided by Thomas Hauber,
Flagstaff (Diary) Friday, September 4th at 10:00PM EST (link)I could only come up with this comparison (the data seem to be incomplete; it’s certainly hard to decipher for an amateur like me):
In August, 2009
The civilian labor force was 154,577,000 (non-military, I suppose)
Employed: 139,649,000
Unemployed: 14,928,000
Not in labor force: 81,509,000
Government employment: 22,487,000 (non-military, I suppose)
So total of unemployed, not in force, plus government seems to be 118,924,000.
Non-government employed seems to be 139,649,000 less 22,487,000, or 117,162,000.
Based on my assertion that government employees do not pay taxes (we pay them for them, indirectly) the total tax burden seems to be paid by less than half of potential workers. And that apparently doesn’t count the military, who are also government employees.
Not clear, I know, but it would take an expert to find the exact numbers.

The Obama Depression?
rantusresurrectus jengelhaupt@gmail.com Friday, September 4th at 10:12PM EST (link)And you know economics from where? So George W didn’t have anything to do with the current situation we’re in and Obama is responsible for it all?
How come that doesn’t sound very plausible?
The current situation: W, nope. Obama, yep. and with that, Hinz Rule! nt

Obama Depression is Right
zackjk Tuesday, September 8th at 3:52PM EST (link)The recession started in December 2007. The house was already on fire when he moved in; just because Obama hasn’t put it out yet, it doesn’t mean that he’s the arsonist.
The fact that...
discerningconservative (Diary) Tuesday, September 8th at 4:02PM EST (link)he has failed to grab a hose and fight that fire and instead has opted to continue to pour gasoline on it makes him more culpable than the “arsonist” that you speak of.
The Alinsky motto is "burn the system down."
Achance (Diary) Tuesday, September 8th at 4:06PM EST (link)Comrade Obama has no desire or intention of putting out the fire. He needs to keep it going, even make it worse to have any success with his stated goal of remaking America.
You’re either hopelessly naive or just another Lefty troll.

False Dichotomy
zackjk Wednesday, September 9th at 12:11AM EST (link)If I have to choose between being hopelessly naive, or just another Lefty troll, I think I must be the troll. However, I don’t think that the choice you’re giving me is very appropriate. I don’t believe that I’m naive, but then again, someone who is naive probably would be too naive to know that they’re naive. I read all sorts of different blogs, magazines, and journals, from all sides of the political spectrum. I make a point of reading things with which I disagree, so that I can try to understand the viewpoints of people with whom I disagree. I also don’t think I’m a troll, a troll knows that they’re a troll, and they will get off on the discord that they cause. I’m interested in an honest conversation, or debate, I don’t want to get anybody riled up. You say that he doesn’t intend to put an end to the recession, that in fact he needs to make it worse and prolong to create the circumstances so that he can “transform” America. I see that over the past few months, the number of people losing their jobs has consistently declined. I also see that since bottoming out at around 6500, the dow jones has rebounded by about 3000 points, gaining almost half its value from its time at the bottom. Where’s the extra gasoline he’s pouring on there?
