@Demonsheep Is A Winner

a tragic and avoidable self-beclowning

If you haven’t met Californian Senate candidate Carly Fiorina’s “demon sheep” attack (the hilarity can be followed on Twitter @demonsheep) on rival Tom Campbell, take a few minutes to view the film and then take this simple quiz.

The key message to this ad is:

1. Don’t use PCP and make political ads.
2. Gee I didn’t see a message.
3. The Fiorina campaign is run by a bunch of tools.
4. Tom Campbell is more likely to spend your money than Fiorina.

My personal seletion was 1. but the correct answer is 3. If you have a doubt please savor the email Leon Wolf shared with the rest of us Subject: Thanks, Tom!

Subject: Thanks, Tom!

All–

As demon sheep-mania continues, this is just a quick note to let you all know how grateful we are to Tom Campbell for highlighting our ad, and thereby his own record of backing big spending, big government and big tax hikes, without even a nominal attempt to claim we’re fibbing.

Thanks, Tom!

Happy Friday in advance,

Liz (on behalf of Team Carly)

Let’s be serious. The demon sheep ad is undoubtedly the most bizarre ad to come down the pike that didn’t involve someone’s genitalia and butterscotch pudding. The idea that anyone is going to watch this ad and take away from it a real aversion to Tom Campbells fiscal record (or at least enough to make Fiornia’s rather exotic positions seem more appealing) is nonsense. This is on par with Bob Schrum calling the Swiftboat guys and thanking them for pointing out that John Kerry served in Vietnam.

I’ve had my differences with Liz but I’ve always regarded her as both a smart and serious person. So here’s my assessment and advice. The video was an own goal of the first magnitude. You’ve had your butt handed to you and now you’re compounding the error by drawing additional attention to the ad and insulting our intelligence by telling us it was successful.

Stop.

Please.

My sides ache and I can barely breathe.

    …namely:

    5. An excellent argument for California Republicans to nominate Chuck DeVore.

The Demon Sheep ad is one thing: creepy. It’s reminiscent of the wacko chick you got wasted and went through with the one-night-stand with, even though you knew she was nuts, and now she keeps showing up in all the most inconvenient places.

    • Third Street

      6. Don’t let a political ad (or any ad, for that matter) drag on for three-and-a-half minutes. Especially when your ad agency is run by people who munch down three sheets of acid each morning before leaving for work, and the primary “enormous thing” your candidate accomplished in life was wrecking Hewlett-Packard so thoroughly it makes any claim of “fiscal conservatism” on her part laughable.

      Chuck DeVore for Senate.

    • Ned Reck

Creepy’s right… the ad is even more reminiscent of the wacko chick that got me wasted; took me to a demolition derby; and went through with the nine-night-stand-binge with, even though I knew she was nuts, and now (years later) she followed me into the Walmart bathroom after recognizing me while she was buying oil in the automotive department.

  • IJB

In all seriousness, and FTR, this is the first time I’ve seen this ad and, as a vehicle for trashing Tom Campbell, I think it’s pretty effective (though overlong, and badly produced, yeah).

However, where I really think it’s EPIC FAIL is not so much on the “demon sheep” (DEMON SHEEP ARE COOL! STOP PERSECUTING THE DEMON SHEEP!!!!), but that it pretty much fails to sell Fiorina – it demolishes Campbell, but promoting Carly almost seems like an afterthought.

Hopefully, what this signals is that this is the beginning of M.A.D. between Fiorina and Campbell, leaving DeVore to rise above the fray.

But, FWIW, I think the “demon sheep” are kinda cute… ;)

    • Richard Mullins

that this whole thing is a laugh a minute. The #demonsheep is the new #pinkelephant of our time. I’m wondering if will appeal to the stoners in CA(no offense to the casual ones).

    • http://erickbrockway.wordpress.com/ Erick Brockway

When you look at her record, she gets defensive and accusatory.
      Kind of like a Democrat.

        No. Hold on.

That’s what really boggles the mind.

    • Raven

And that it fully accomplishes its obvious goal of destroying Campbell. Or at least I hope so if he did sign off on the CA budgets.

There are 3 problems I see with it, though:
First, as others have noted, it’s Long. Where did it air? On TV? Might as well make a full 30 minute show. Turn it into a TV series…
Second, also as others have noted, it doesn’t promote Fiorina. You don’t make attack ads yourself. You farm them out to support organizations and keep your own name off the bloody things.

And thirdly, and likely the most damaging: Who are the sheep? CA voters? Not smart, Carly. REALLY not smart.

With apologies to Swedish art-house filmmakers.

Man that was BIZARRE. And CREEPY. Oh man, who was listening to the message on account of trying to figure out what the sheep have to do with this and OH MY GOD THAT SHEEP HAS RED EYES. Now I have nightmares, THANK YOU CARLY you BALD MORON.

And if it is an example of her decision making ability I’m pretty sure it is not a plus.

    • joebgardener

      What’s next? “Retard” jokes??

      • Raven

“They say it’s one out of three. And if you can’t tell who it is, then You’re the Dee-dee-dee!”

        –Yeah. I went there.

        • joebgardener

Could you translate that to English please??

          • Raven

Might even have the dee-dee-dee song on youtube.

            Yep. Here it is…

          • joebgardener

Anyone who wants to ping on someone’s appearance as a result of chemotherapy is a cad….and should be called on it every single time.

If you don’t understand that than perhaps you just weren’t raised properly. That’s not my problem.

There are a million legitimate reasons to detest Fiorina….her appearance is NOT one of them.

          • Raven

Then why write a post Making it your problem?

With public persons ANYTHING is fair game. That has been thr rule aas long as there has been a right to free speech.

If you don’t like it, there really isn’t anything you can do about it.

          • joebgardener

It’s a matter of common decency.

As I said before….if you don’t understand that than perhaps you weren’t raised properly.

It’s not my problem. It is your problem.

          • Raven

It’s not common, and, in fact, doesn’t exist in war or politics.

If you haven’t figured that out by now, well, then I guess that explains why you’re so offended by the “r” word.

          • joebgardener

Conservative principles are based in common decency. If issues like defending the sanctity of life, and the denial of soft bigotry as perpetrated by the Dems are not based in “common decency” than nothing is.

Name calling and perjoratives are liberal methods of response. They are the furthest thing from Conservatism. You’re support of the mocking of candidate, a GOP candidate at that, due to her appearance is a typical liberal method of attack.

You are absolutely wrong on this. Your unwillingness to admit you’re wrong only reinforces my belief that I’m wasting my time trying to explain it to you. Accordingly, I’m done with this back and forth.

The last word is yours. If you can honestly defend your support of attacking a GOP candidate because of their appearance caused by chemotherapy then by all means grab your shovel and keep digging.
            I certainly won’t stop you.

  • Third Street

“Fuh-SY-no”? “Eff-KY-no”? There are several more possibilities but they sound profane.

Maybe they did give a pronounciation and I just didn’t hear it, due to every capillary in my brain having exploded once the sheep with glowing-red Terminator eyes and dress shoes started crawling around on its hands and knees.

You can’t get buzz on an acronym if no one can say it aloud, Team Carly. Lousy, lousy, lousy.

Oh well, at least Liz Mair’s a babe.

          • ReaganLives

I get how it works now.

I notice you didn’t scold the guy who posted the picture, so, I can assume you think calling a woman “a babe” is respectful, right? Here’s the yardstick I use; if I’d say it to a judge, it’s respectful.

If a woman has a masculine jaw and somebody notices she looks masculine…. it’s a wisecrack. Perhaps…it’s a wisecrack meant to put the “she’s a babe” guy in his place for objectifying a serious woman.

But point taken — you’re very sensitive about such wisecracks. I’ll be more restrained in the future posts, I promise.

          • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

Complimenting a woman (and RS diaries alum) on her appearance is a much more pleasant thing to do than insulting her.

            Thank you.

          • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

Long time readers will get a big kick out of the fact that I’m now threatening a ban in defense of Liz Mair.

          • ReaganLives

much more pleasant than insulting her. But keep in mind….most women don’t think being called “a babe” is a compliment.

            At all!

          • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens
          • Raven

That Didn’t like being called a “babe.”

          • ReaganLives

what an incredibly chauvinistic remark. Is it possible you’ve had an entire lifetime surrounded by women who don’t want to be taken seriously? Women who spend a lifetime aspiring to the lofty title of “a babe?”

Do you really believe that women who don’t want to be objectified by men aren’t “happy to be women?” Wow.

            Just, wow.

          • Raven

To be surrounded by women who like receiving honest compliments. I find it sad that you do not know any.

          • Raven

Too impressed with how seriously they should be taken, can not be taken seriously or trusted in any way with any thing. Male or female.

This is the ultimate lesson the feminists have given us.

          • JadedByPolitics

would be women who have NO CONFIDENCE in their ability to move beyond the physical and show their intelligence. The beauty of Conservative babes is WE ARE BOTH…heh!

shoot I miss being called a babe as often as when I was in my twenties but when I get it I LOVE IT!

BTW stop playing PC crap with what N.O.W. women would want to happen against what a REAL red-blooded American Conservative woman would want they are diametrically opposing wants.

    • Richard Mullins

I don’t know what the pronunciation of it is but I’m leaning to eff-KY-no. That all I can figure out. I’ve wondering if the eyes on the #demonsheep are a weapon. The whole thing is good for a rib sticking laughfest on twitter but not much else.

      • Raven

        Works for me.

      • Brian_Roastbeef

I’d assume that its pronounced as a hard C in the acronym as well. My problem with that aspect of it is that pronouncing a hard C after the F for “Fiscal” is entirely too close to dropping the F-bomb…

I suppose the ad is talked about, so at that level its a success, but everybody thinks its nothing but weird. Compare to this week’s ad from Illinois showing Giannoulias and his mob connection, or Scott Brown and his now-famous truck – those are far better. Those show you can think outside the box and get an effective and memorable ad without getting weird.

To me it seems more like Carly is scared by the poll numbers showing Campbell ahead… Still, there’s quite a bit of time left…maybe DeVore can rise above and gain some ground on the two of them.

    • tankertodd

I read that the company who made the ad already had that footage in the can from years ago! I guess one day they said, let’s go film a guy in sheep’s clothing with some freaky red eyes. Can you imagine that dialogue when Carly found out she was in such luck?

Carly: “What we need now is a sheep that is actually a demon or some sort. Preferably a Dell user. Really weird stuff please.”
Video Guys: “You know, I think we got some of that lying around here…”
      Carly: “No s&^%!”
Video Guys: “Oh yeah, we got all of that up in here, yo.”
Carly: “Great, looks great. Now I can lose the election with grace. I mean it’s pretty hard to be any less respected in America as a big corporation executive, but joining Congress would definitely be a step down.”
Video Guys: “What’s with the hair anyway?”
Carly: “Shaddup or Neil will ban you.”

My take yesterday was that it was one of the worst campaign ads ever. After seeing it a few times today, it?s growing on me. I?m definitely no FCIoriNO fan, but I?m beginning to like the ad itself.

The best campaign ads for 2010 definitely go to Scott Brown’s team.

I’ve been there with family, too. As have many others on here. If you take it so seriously, it will kill you, too.

        • Third Street

And that’s one thing that chemotherapy and the Carly Fiorina campaign have in common: at some point, you just have to laugh.

        • sharonmcp

This is the first time I’ve responded to a comment that some might consider to be not “politically correct”.

As someone who has lost 5 family members to cancer in the past 4 years, having a sister who is currently undergoing chemo, and finding out just 2 hours before dio55 made their comment that my daughter-in-law was diagnosed with cancer yesterday, I guess I was a little overly sensitive to the comment.

I know dio55 was just going with the flow of the comments and I apologize for putting a damper on that flow.

We understand that. We’re not trying to attack you for what you said. We’re just reminding you that if you are going to keep fighting for your loved ones, you have to keep your sense of humour. It’s not an easy thing to do, I know, but it’s not something you can afford to lose.

    Carly Fiorina?s Iran Printer Sales
    from: Hogue News:
    http://hoguenews.com/?p=4188

    an excerpt::
“The question is not whether HP sold printers to Iran through regional distributors, it seems to be whether the HP CEO had the knowledge that it was taking place. Which leads those critical of Carly Firoina to ask, ?How can the CEO not know if her company is violating a US Trade Embargo??.

more than one site had this.

    I hope this ain’t a threadjack.

I’m with the author on this one. Never do PCP and commercials. I kept thinking is she referring to the people as sheep? Why? It certainly isn’t a nice thought. Then there’s Tom somebody and a man crawling around in a sheep suit?

Lastly, they never showed Carly at all. Why? Isn’t the point to highlight her and all we get is a side glimpse, which might translate into she’s hard to pin down on issues?

Darned silly and three minutes I don’t get back.
