Sarah Palin’s Bracelet

who is Eric Robinson and why is acting like a twit?

[And with an update appended.]

We all have our pet peeves. Last evening Moe addressed one of his, the rampant misogyny of the online left which refuses to treat women with whom it disagrees as actual humans.

I have a different one. As a veteran there are few things I find more disgusting than people using their status as a veteran to not inform their position on a subject but rather as a shield from criticism and a cudgel with which to beat others. The Iraq war and the war in Afghanistan has produced a bumper crop of these twits, (mostly leftists surprise, surprise) who presume that military service gives them some special authority in society.

This is especially true when they are idiots.

Take for instance the recent example of a clown named Eric Robinson, currently a first year grad student in international relations at, naturally, Yale. (h/t to Legal Insurrection at HotAir).

Robinson took to the pages of the Yale Daily News to bash Sarah Palin:

I hadn’t noticed it until I watched MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Tuesday, but it is a memorial bracelet; something familiar to veterans who have lost friends and family in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I wear one commemorating a friend of mine who died in Baghdad in October of 2006, and I know many other veterans — and some still in the armed forces — who wear these bracelets as a reminder of the sacrifices their friends made on behalf of the units in which they served and the country they swore to protect.

[...]

This brings me back to my issue with Palin. The name on her black memorial bracelet — one, like the gold star, a demonstration of a friend or associate who was killed in action — is that of her oldest son, Track. Track served honorably in Iraq, and both he and his parents should be thanked for his selfless service to his country. He is also alive.

Commemorating Track’s service by wearing a a black memorial bracelet which is reserved for those dead or even a red bracelet for those missing in action, demonstrates a horrifying contempt for those who gave their last full measure of devotion or an almost unbelievable ignorance of the importance of symbols in American history.

Unfortunately, given Palin’s reputation and frequent public statements, I assume it is the latter.

Sarah Palin, please take off the bracelet. Be thankful you have no reason to wear it.

The problem is that the bracelet worn by Governor Palin is commercially produced by The Trophy House and it is bronze, not black.

Given the gap in life achievements between Robinson and Governor Palin one would have thought that he would at least have taken the time to get his facts straight before launching into a cheap, juvenile ad hominem attack on the Governor. But Robinson, his ego inflated to Godzilla-like proportions by his status as a grad student at Yale and his service as a civil affairs staff officer in Afghanistan, can’t be bothered with facts.

A word for Eric Robinson. You were a volunteer when you served in the Armed Forces. That’s on you. The fact that you’re one of 28 million veterans now alive in the United States doesn’t make you smart, it doesn’t make you important, and it gives you no special insights into anything other than your own experiences. It certainly doesn’t give you a license to criticize anyone else on any subject based on that experience. The fact that you wear a bracelet doesn’t mean that such a bracelet is a military tradition or meaningful to anyone but you. It doesn’t. And your attempt to conflate this bracelet with a real tradition, the Blue Star and Gold Star, is simply dishonest.

In the future when you have the urge to use your veteran status to belabor someone else, check your facts first. You’ll be a douche a lot less frequently.

Update

Robinson has updated his attack (below) on Governor Palin so it is only fitting that I do the same.

Author’s Note: In my column in the News Wednesday, I criticized former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for wearing a black memorial bracelet with her son’s name on it, as Track returned unharmed from Iraq last fall. However, Sarah Palin’s bracelet was not black; instead, it was a dark brown “DeployedHero” bracelet worn by those who have loved ones currently serving in the military. The bracelet is different from the black one associated with men and women who are killed in action overseas. Recognizing this, I apologize to the governor and to any reader who might have been misled by my piece. I hope that this serves as an important lesson for anyone interested in the importance of these symbols.

Robinson is obviously on his way to blogging for FDL or MMfA and a successful career in Democrat politics. The guy makes an egregious series of attacks on Governor Palin and his “correction” is that he’s sorry that any of us might have been misled. He’s not sorry for getting his facts wrong. He’s not sorry for casting aspersions on Governor Palin’s character or intelligence. He’s not sorry for misusing his five whole years in uniform to spread a calumny about a politician whom he doesn’t like. But he does want to remind us of “the importance of these symbols.”

Way to go, Eric. Make your mother proud.

    Brutal.

I hear the young man retracted this morning in the pages of the Yalie Daily Blab. Good on him for doing so.

BTW, ABC was out with another push poll that said that Everyone Hates Palin and thinks she wears Clown Shoes. An interesting morning, given that it’s Palin’s birthday today.

    • http://thecorruptworld.blogspot.com/ wayneinnh

I took a couple notes (thanks TIVO). It stated that 71% of the respondents said Palin was not qualified to be president. It then went on to say that 2/3 of the people polled weren’t familiar with the Tea Party movement. Just out of curiosity, who did they poll? I don’t think the internals of that one will be released any time soon.

  • RedBeard

    “Never mind.”

Sheesh. At least it was funny when Gilda did it.

  • bk

Above the article it says that there is an “author’s note” appended. It’s not even called a “correction”.

Then you scroll down through the original article in its entirety, past the line that IDs who Robinson is, and you find the “note”.

Author’s Note: In my column in the News Wednesday, I criticized former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for wearing a black memorial bracelet with her son?s name on it, as Track returned unharmed from Iraq last fall. The “important lesson” is that if you’re writing for a liberal college newspaper, you can leave the fiction intact and add the truth as a footnote that you hope people will overlook.

    • RedBeard

How about going back and doing this right, like a real man would do after making such a blunder?

This reminds me of Bill O’Reilly and his weak-kneed “correction” on his horrible Malmedy gaffe.

Personal responsibility, guys. Try it some time. It feels good.

      • bk

Then it continued after he added the “note”. One of them said it’s like lynching an innocent person and then saying it’s an important lesson for anyone interested in the importance of rope.

        Love it!

  • http://thesandsinstitute.org Vassar Bushmills

…I apologize in like manner. And when I make a mistake with a rant, or an abuse, I do likewise.

How can anyone apologize in this case without a flurry of “I am such an idiot, dumb-***”, etc.?

    Rant is as rant does.

  • http://jeffemanuel.net Jeff Emanuel

Misled? Really? Robinson gave readers two choices WRT Palin: That she “demonstrates a horrifying contempt for those who gave their last full measure of devotion” or that she possesses “an almost unbelievable ignorance of the importance of symbols in American history.”

There’s no ambiguity there. Apparently Eric Robinson, former military officer(?), is too mush of a wuss to actually apologize for his hyperbolic offering of false alternatives.

    • streiff

I think he’s a West Pointer. He separated as a captain with 5 years of service which is the end of a USMA active duty commitment.

He was a Civil Affairs officer in Afghanistan ans says he served in Iraq but I can’t find out what he did there.

      • DefendUSA

So he must still be in a reserve component…isn’t the obligation five years active and 3 reserve to fulfill?

Either way, the guy is a leftist douche. I do not like that just because he’s a veteran it automatically requires respect. Um. not.

Nope. Leading by example was the way I was taught. Maybe it’s because I was enlisted…Those butter bars don’t means jack if you think you are too smart to learn from others. Apparently, Robinson has this problem. It would suck to be him.

        • DefendUSA

My glasses are missing and I typo’ed… The s does not belong on mean.

  • Read Chesterton in New Improved Jersey

every time another conservative whimsically suggests – a la Starship Troopers – that military service should be a requirement for citizenship or the right to vote. Multiculturalism, feminism, and PC have essentially given us parallel military cultures. Only one of which functions in the interest of national security.

I have a young female relative who recently completed a four year USAF stint. A know-it-all, loudmouth, obese child. If she had been called to serve in Iraq of Afghanistan she would have had a sh!t hemorrhage. It just never occurred to her that she would ever be put in harm’s way. I work with a long time reservist who uses his military status for personal advancement, with nary a day outside the US, not protecting anything other than his preferred veteran status.

I was once thrown off of a once well-respected conservative web forum for daring to question one of these self-important posers who hide behind their military affiliation.

God bless the men who join the military to serve and protect. God save us from those “persons” who join to be served and protected.

  • fpete13527

Clueless beyond cluless compounded with zero integrity multiplied by complete lack of courage.

Thanks for posting this Streiff. As a fellow veteran, I share the pet peeve you describe in your post.

  • twomoon

Eric Robinson seems to desire a higher public profile, and so, to paraphrase the great military figure W.T. Sherman, I say give it to him. I believe that we should all use the name “Eric Robinson” to denote unexpectedly limited intellectual capacity. For example: “as dumb as Eric Robinson” or “that was a real Eric Robinson” or “an Eric Robinson moment.” You get the idea. I think that it’s a win-win. He gets noticed and we enrich the language. If you agree, please spread the word.

  • Thomas Holmberg

    what an insane concept …

perhaps I missed the proclamation (probably on account that I watch no TV at all … ever)

    • ceili_dancer

With the fixation in the 90′s with ribbons. He put every conceivable colr and color combination on his jacket. He looked like one of those old soviet veterans with his display of medals. Then, proudly proclaimed that he cares more than anyone else in the world, because he is wearing the ribbons and you are not. Na-na-nana boo-boo

  • WarEagle01

with the online Left. But through his own ignorance and laziness managed to make fools of all of them. I don’t think we’ll be hearing much more from Eric Robinson.

  • smitch61

    Great read, good job.

  • swamphermit

and put him on the list with John Kerry. I agree with streiff that this guy has his eyes set on a political career.

His “Author’s Note Appended” is an insult, and the article’s title still remains all over the Yale Daily…even under the “CORRECTIONS” section, off to the right under “MOST POPULAR” articles…

So mad, that I just contacted the paper…sheesh!

    So, where’s Obama’s hero bracelet?

I’ve been working on a diary regarding Obama’s hero bracelet and have done some significant research on what became of it, but have so far come up empty. Again, however, I haven?t completed all the necessary research.

Are you listening, Mr. Robinson? And in the same vein of your dear leader ditching his hero bracelet, his flag lapel pin is fooling no one. Your president won?t even visit the troops unless the press corps(e) can come along to take pictures.

A page over there’s folks wetting themselves about Obama not taking the press corps to a soccer game, now here, you’re decrying the fact that the Press corps goes w/ the Prez to Iraq. If you don’t like his policies, vote ‘em out, but stuff like this seems childish.

  • mchavez

Another fine example of the MSM Drive Shooting. The damage has already been done. Now every lib will quote it as fact. i.e. “I see Russia from my House”.

  • Raven

He didn’t say, “I’m sorry any of you might have been misled.”

He said, “I apologize to the Governor and anyone who might have been misled.”
And that was AFTER he said, “Yeah, I got my facts wrong.”

He didn’t do the right thing with his initial piece and check his facts, but he Did do the right thing, with the right words when you pointed out to him that he was wrong.
Give him the credit for that.

for using the sacred symbol of a hero bracelet for crass political gain, who in essence tossed it over the White House gate when it didn’t serve his interest any more. (See my comments earlier in this thread.)

In addition, Mr. Robinson himself tried to score political points while hiding behind the flag. He wasn’t offended that Sarah Palin was wearing a hero bracelet, but only pretended to be.

    • RedBeard

It was a weak reaction to criticism, done in a less-than-forthright manner.

Did you see O-Reilly’s equally pathetic “correction” to his unforgivable Malmedy screwup? Same lack of spine and integrity in both cases.

  • alvnjms

Do you mean that the Vet you quoted fullfilled his service commitment? Sarah was so good, she only had to do half hers to be through. Or do you mean the one between grad school at Yale and the fact that the ever erudite Palin attended FOUR colleges? Take that stupid Yale grad student. Four!
