Former President Bill Clinton is coming to North Carolina to help raise money for U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan’s re-election campaign.

Clinton was slated to be in Chapel Hill on Tuesday to headline a fundraising luncheon for the first-term Democrat. Hagan’s campaign said the event at The Carolina Inn was private and closed to the media.

One might wonder why Hagan has asked Clinton to campaign for her but is doing it behind closed doors. The answer is simple. Karma, baby!

Back in 1998 when Hagan was a justifiably obscure state senator she had another opportunity to meet Bill Clinton and wasn’t anxious for voters to know:

“But when Hagan realized a newspaper photographer had taken her picture with a portrait of Clinton in the background at a political event Saturday, she was concerned enough about the picture to change seats and ask a reporter if he could ‘’do something’ about the photograph.” (Democrats Seeking Distance from Affair; State Senate Candidate Kay Hagan and Other Democrats Do Damage Control On President Clinton’s – and their Party’s – Political Problems, Robert Lamme, Greensboro News & Record, September 13, 1998)

and

“Asked later in the afternoon about her objections to the photograph, Hagan said she was worried about the impression her proximity to the Clinton portrait might leave on voters. ‘’I’m saying publishing this picture would imply that I stand by or condone the president’s conduct and that would be a misrepresentation of my position,’ she said.” (Democrats Seeking Distance from Affair; State Senate Candidate Kay Hagan and Other Democrats Do Damage Control On President Clinton’s – and their Party’s – Political Problems, Robert Lamme, Greensboro News & Record, September 13, 1998)

That’s right, when Clinton was basking in the glory of the Monica Lewinsky et al scandal, Hagan ran from him like a scalded dog. Now that she finds herself in trouble, she asks him to help bail her out… but in private… the image it might send to voters being of less concern than being turfed out of office by them.

Now Clinton joins Obamacare, the medical device tax, the debt limit, perennial Ron Paul bugabear auditing the Fed, and right-to-work in the Valhalla of Kay Hagan’s flip flops.
