Good Christians! Where Are You?

Even Given IRS Rules, The Silence Is Dismaying! Dobson? Robertson?

I have written various pieces (q.v.) about the few bishops of the Catholic Church who stood up to Pelosi and Biden last month about abortion, which brought back the debate about excommunicating leftist Catholics (oxymoron alert!) who support all sorts of issues inimical to Catholic/Christian teachings, or at least denying them Communion at Mass, a sort of half-way step toward excommunication.

One archbishop, Raymond Burke of Saint Louis, on October 3rd, said the Democrat Party was becoming the “party of Death”: the story normally would cause screaming MSM headlines. Did you hear about it? Normally the MSM would be demanding apologies, along with Reid and Pelosi and Biden demanding freedom of conscience, etc.

With a heavy heart, Archbishop Raymond Burke acknowledges that the U.S. Democratic Party is quickly moving to become the “party of death.” The new head of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature said this in an interview published Saturday by the Italian episcopal conference’s daily newspaper Avvenire. In this interview conducted by Gianni Cardinale, the archbishop, who was formerly the archbishop of St. Louis, comments on his move to Rome and his views of election-year politics in the United States.

We know why the MSM refused to fuss about this: no analysis is necessary. But such a comment has been the exception: and even with the IRS rules about losing tax-exempt status if churches become politicized, we know that there are ways for the churches to express their pleasure and displeasure at certain political trends.

I can say that the American Catholic Church has been timid in recent decades about commenting on the political scene as an institution: part of this is an historical reluctance from the desire to be absorbed into the melting pot and not be too apart from the Protestant majority, part of it comes from the lack of consensus among the hierarchy, and another part comes from theological conflicts, e.g. the Vatican refusing to accept the self-defensive nature of the Iraq War, opposing capital punishment, and other stances which are part of a left-wing agenda.

But what has happened to the voices of Conservative Christians in this election?

We know that James Dobson said in February he would sit out the election, if McCain won the nomination. This is probably one reason for the silence. Recently however, Dobson has changed his mind.

Did the MSM report this? Did you hear about it? Again we know why not.

To be sure, a few brave pastors are going head-to-head with the IRS rules which have silenced many churchmen:

Mormons were no doubt dismayed by the intolerance shown to Romney, and rightly so, and other conservative Christians have no doubt been suffering Huckabee disappointment.

And in a report from Virginia last May, Robert Novak wrote:

“Nevertheless, the word is that some evangelicals dispute Huckabee’s support. One experienced, credible activist in Christian politics who would not let his name be used told me that Huckabee, in personal conversation with him, had embraced the concept that an Obama presidency might be what the American people deserve. That fits what has largely been a fringe position among evangelicals: that the pain of an Obama presidency is in keeping with the Bible’s prophecy.”

So there are some Conservative Christians who think Big Brobama is the punishing hand of God, ready to whip America for its sins in tolerating promiscuity, homosexuality, etc. The logic of this belief for such people is beyond debate.

They will sit out the election and turn their backs on the destruction of the American Sodom and Gomorrah.

So it seems that Conservative Christians have become fragmented in this election, and are perhaps therefore not the strong force one would have expected to see in an election where ideas hostile to their beliefs are threatening to become the law of the land.

I haven't seen any of the Conservative Christians of whom you speak

…and glad of it. None that I know would dare sit out the election. Notwithstanding my struggle to turn the other cheek, I’m darn sure not going to roll over and play dead. Neither will my peers; but being connected to the military, we may tend to be more agressive than the norm. My pastor has said on more than one occasion he doesn’t give a rip about the IRS. Having said all that, though, do we really need clergy getting political? Instead, they should focus on Christian principles that are pertinent to the issues and proper voting will (should) follow.

Thanks for the comments!

Agreed: certainly one does not want to start hearing political speeches on Sunday, although apparently that is what happens or has happened with Big Brobama.

With this election, however, given that infanticide could make bigger inroads in America than it already has (and the “party of Death” might start talking about euthanasia next if they get their majority), I see the anti-life aspect -rather than the economic – as being the more dangerous result of any Dem win.

As a result, I have been hoping for just a little bit more leadership – circumspect, to be sure – from the religions.

An excerpt:

“[T]o say, ‘I will address those factors that might have the benefit of reducing abortion, but will not oppose the very laws that permit it,’ is not only unpersuasive, it also is an illogical and unsustainable position. Substitute the word racism or slavery for abortion in the above sentence to see how the argument crumbles under the weight of incoherence….Simply put, our concern for the dignity of the human person already born is rendered moot if we do not place first concern on the right of that person to be born.”

My emphasis.

Euthenasia

I was previously Tlaloc, and I was banned last year. (Diary) Friday, October 17th at 2:18PM EDT (link)

Here in Oregon we’ve had a euthenasia law on the books since 1994. Oregon Death with Dignity Act. SCOTUS upheld it in 2005 in Gozales v. Oregon.

Just FYI.

Here is an example of compassionate liberalism:

An interesting excerpt:

Randy Stroup is a 53-year-old Dexter, Oregon resident who faces a troubling bout of prostate cancer. As an uninsured resident with a need for expensive chemotherapy he applied to the Oregon health insurance plan for help.
Lane Individual Practice Association administers the Oregon Health Plan in Stroup’s county and they responded to his request with a letter saying the state would not cover the treatment but would pay for an assisted suicide.
“It dropped my chin to the floor,” Stroup told FOX News. “[How could they] not pay for medication that would help my life, and yet offer to pay to end my life?”

Archbishop of Denver Speaks Out Against Obama and Dems Again!

Strelnikov (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 7:57PM EDT (link)

Have you seen these remarks in the MSM? I would be interested in knowing!

Archbishop Chaput on Big Brobama:

“To suggest — as some Catholics do — that Senator Obama is this year’s ‘real’ pro-life candidate requires a peculiar kind of self-hypnosis, or moral confusion, or worse,” Chaput said according to his prepared remarks, titled “Little Murders.”

http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/archbishopobama/2008/10/18/141829.html

We can only hope that wavering or apathetic Catholics – or anyone, Christian or otherwise – might think twice about voting for the Big Brobama because of the Archbishop’s words.
