Two quick thoughts about Herman Cain

1. I really, really hope Herman Cain doesn’t drop out this week. Regardless of the truth of any of these accusations, if he gives up this quickly, it will send a signal to the Left and the media that burying someone with allegations of sexual impropriety is a successful way to drive a conservative candidate from the race.

In our reality TV world, all it takes is a little bit of money and a promise of notoriety, and you can find someone who will do and say just about anything on camera. I do not want to encourage future efforts to organize character assassinations of our candidates. If Cain drops out, it should be because the campaign at the top is dysfunctional and destructive, not because of this nastiness.

2. The mere existence of text messages proves nothing. All we’ve seen so far is proof that Ginger White knows Herman Cain’s phone number and that they have communicated. White has not shown any evidence about the substance of those communications.

Let’s be realistic. The mere fact of exchanging messages between a married man and single woman is not per se proof of an adulterous relationship. When she comes forward with a text message that says, “Hey baby, what are you wearing?” then I might take her more seriously. Otherwise…meh. White’s lack of disclosure of any actual evidence, plus the information that continues to come out about her, makes me very skeptical about the credibility of her story.

I myself run my business through my cell phone and laptop and have exchanged lots of phone calls, emails, text messages, and twitter direct messages with elected officials and candidates, many of whom are married men. If you looked at those messages, you’d see draft press releases, links to news articles, questions about event scheduling…all very mundane stuff. Also, I work at home and I’m a bit of a night owl, so sometimes I’m working late. “Sarah Rumpf sent an email to a married elected official at 1:00 a.m.!” Yeah, with a discussion about a campaign finance issue that would bore you to tears if you read it.

So, regarding these allegations, I’m going to continue to give Cain the benefit of the doubt. My questions about his overall campaign strategy remain, and I sincerely hope Cain takes these next few days as an opportunity to reevaluate in which direction his campaign is headed.

    wife.

“The mere fact of exchanging messages between a married man and single woman is not per se proof of an adulterous relationship.”

You and Hillary go to the same school?

      it’s just “two quick thoughts”

Not the sum total of everything I think about the campaign.

Another article (which I did link in the above post) has more on this issue:

    Maybe it’s not a fair application here…

I do know Cain’s mishandling of these allegations has only made him look worse.

Of course, I didn’t need to be told he was a sexual whatever to know he shouldn’t be president.

Race card against Perry, ignorance of foreign policy that would make an international affairs freshman blush and hiding a poorly-thought economic plan under slogans (‘nahn-nahn-nahn’) was plenty for me and many others. Libya just sealed the deal for most of those left, I believe. He looked like a fifth-grader trying to remember which flash-card answer went to the question.

…or until the next mistress comes out.

is not a good sign. I can’t speak for Mr. Cain, but I’d think an innocent man would have the opposite reaction, getting fired up and refusing to ever quit the race.

The guy lies through his teeth because he knows there are people stupid enough to believe him.

    1. Cain’s several “mixed messages” this week indicate that he is seriously considering dropping out..that he feels his candidacy won’t be viable because of all the well..”distractions”..He has brought that upon himself, because he had to know these were coming, ( true OR false)and he failed to prepare for it..heck..even to let his staff know what was coming.. That’s miserable handling of a crisis..how well would he do once in the Oval Office?
    2. The MOST TELLING part of the original FOX story, or me, was when she gave the phone to the reporter, he sent a text to Cain, and he immedaitely CALLED her back.

Sorry, Sarah, but NO WAY does that pass the smell test. I’m glad that you’re reputation is such that elected officials repsond to your emails/tweets..it means you’re being recognized as an ever-important voice..but come on..if you texted rhe Miami-Dade dog catcher “Call Me”.would he call you right back? Nah…but Cain did.

Running for the WH is incredibly time consuming. Candidates are tightly shceduled. Their PERSONAL contact info..phone #s, email..is closely guarded. Otherwise, they’d get thousands of texst/tweets/emails each day, and would have no time for anything except looking at their phone every time it rang or vibrated.

It’s disappointing to be let down by someone that many of us, including myself, had come to admire.

So, what do you think of Connie Mack? Is the senate race in Florida all but over?

    1. He is a liar.

I have never had sex with any of these women so far and not any of the others if they show up either.

    2. He is an ignorant buffoon.

I have never had sex with no woman named Libya.

Regardless of whether he is guilty or innocent, he has not handled the situation very well. He’s lashed out at Perry, then at the democrats, and then at the women themselves. It hasn’t made him look good in public eyes.

He has the virtues of a non-politician, which gives him a certain amount of appeal, but he also has the weaknesses attached to that. How you handle a scandal can be more important than the scandal.

As for his guilt or innocence…. much as I hate saying this, I’m beginning to find their stories credible. If one or two came out with vague accusations, I would probably dismiss it, particularly since one of them has a history of financial trouble. However, there are now six of them, some of whom are making specific charges, and we have a woman who is alleging a long-term affair.

Speaking as someone who has researched sexual harassment, it’s rarely a single incident. The harasser commits his/her acts against many women over the course of their career and when one comes forward, so do others, revealing a pattern.

Not all of them may be telling the truth and are simply jumping on the bandwagon, but there are too many of them to simply dismiss out of hand.

I don’t see how Cain recovers from the chaos of the last month.

Far more damaging than any accusation has been how the campaign has responded each time. It’s been a confusing, upsetting, stressful thing to watch.

I’m just thinking of the broader picture here and If a conservative candidate just throws in the towel the day after someone throws an accusation at them, that’s just creating a dangerous temptation.

There are some weird and troubling aspects to this story, and I’m not comfortable saying there’s nothing there. But I also don’t think we really have proof that there IS something there. At least not yet. So my gut instinct is to want to wait and see how things play out, if any more evidence is presented, how Cain reacts, etc.

RE: Connie Mack. Ha. His personal history is a hot mess, he spends most of his time in California, and his voting record isn’t as conservative as he wants people to think. He’s going to find that running statewide is a lot harder than his cushy SW Florida district. His daddy’s name will only go so far.

Plus, I just don’t put a lot of stock in polls this early (our primary isn’t until August)
