I Will Not Buy Any More Tickets to Sean Penn’s Movies.

Last Sunday night, my husband and I were eagerly anticipating watching the Academy Awards. We prepared a feast of fried catfish, fried shrimp, fried onion rings over jalapeño cheese grits, topped off with salsa (we like to eat healthy). We were having a lovely evening until disaster struck–i.e., Sean Penn gave his acceptance speech for his Oscar win for best actor for his performance in “Milk” (the video is below).

After watching that grotesque display, I literally wanted to throw my grits at the TV (I didn’t because my husband loves his new flat screen TV). There was so much wrong with Penn’s acceptance speech that I don’t even know where to begin, but I will try.

First of all, Sean Penn didn’t begin his speech by thanking his fans and his fellow Americans who buy tickets to his movies and have made him a very rich and successful man (then again, he didn‘t even bother thank his wife who was sitting right next to him, but I digress). I mean, in NO OTHER COUNTRY could Sean Penn have attained the kind of success and wealth that he has in the U.S.A. No, instead, Mr. Penn begins his speech by mockingly calling the audience a bunch of “commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns”–thus implying that people who didn’t see his movie are a bunch of  Archie Bunkers who hate gay people. Well, I didn’t see “Milk“, but it’s certainly not because I hate gay people (I see everything with Nathan Lane in it–I loved “The Birdcage“ and “The Producers“). I didn’t see “Milk“ because it looked to me like it sucked, and “The Dark Knight” looked like a much better flick.

Second of all, Mr. Penn then went on to say that he was glad to live in a country that would “elect an elegant man as president”. Come again? Did he really just say that? I mean, there have been a lot of “elegant men” throughout history who have also been really bad men. The Christian Bale character in “American Psycho” was an “elegant man” (not to compare President Obama to him–I’m just trying to make a point). I, personally, would prefer that a competent man be elected president, rather than an “elegant man”. Furthermore, as far as competency goes, President Obama seems to be failing the test. Now, John McCain is not an “elegant man”, but he is a heroic man (something that Sean Penn knows absolutely nothing about) and a competent man. Would Mr. Penn still be proud to live in this country if John McCain had been elected instead of Barack Obama? I doubt it. Anyway, I think that someone needs to explain to Sean Penn how patriotism works–you don’t take your ball home and do propaganda for Iran and Iraq just because your guy loses. Patriotism means loving your country even if your “elegant” candidate doesn’t win.

And finally, Sean Penn rounded out his God-awful, preachy speech by stating that people who voted for Proposition Eight (the gay marriage ban in CA) should, “sit and reflect (like they were children that he was putting in the corner) and anticipate their great shame and their shame in their grandchildren’s eye’s”. This coming from a man who was previously married to Madonna (cough, trash bag, cough) and whose favorite pastime is punching out photographers, but I digress.

Well, Mr. Penn’s speech got me thinking. I actually am open to gay marriage (I happen to think that marriage is good for society, and–as Bill O’Reilly has pointed– that gay people adopt children that nobody else will adopt). However, I would be willing to bet that my grandmother isn’t. I mean, I have never actually taken the time to ask her how she feels about Proposition Eight, because, when I do get to spend time with her, I value our conversations too much to waste time boring her with minutia such as how she feels about Proposition Eight. But, she is a devout Catholic and is staunchly pro-life, so I’d be willing to bet that she would have voted for the ban on gay marriage had she been given the opportunity. However, my grandmother has raised eleven children (one died of spinal bifida when he was ten), the youngest of which is gay. She loves my uncle so much (he is an awesome guy) that she, and one of my aunts, even made his gown when he was queen of a gay Mardi Gras ball (trust me, it was a big honor). My grandmother was also the head of her local chapter of The Ladies of Charity, and she has literally spent her entire life serving other people. She has absolutely NOTHING to be ashamed of in my eyes.

Oh, and on a side note, Mr. Elegant himself, Barack Obama, is against gay marriage. I wonder if Sean Penn thinks that President Obama should be ashamed of himself?

Now, speaking of shame (a word that I didn’t think was even in Mr. Penn’s vocabulary), in November 2008, Sean Penn personally visited Hugo Chavez and Raul Castro–two very anti-American dictators. He wrote about his adventures in The Nation; however, you can see him discuss his travels in the video below where he implies that Pat Robertson made him go visit these two thugs (that’s like a child saying “The devil made me do it“). In fact, Penn even has the audacity to compare our elections here in the US to the ones in Venezuela by saying that “they have imperfect elections, but so do we.” Unbelievable.

Thankfully, I am not the only sane person out there who thinks that it’s disgraceful for a man of Sean Penn’s fame and stature to visit publicly with, and give a platform to, anti-American dictators. James Kirchick wrote an excellent piece for The Advocate (America’s leading gay publication) where he calls Penn out for being “a friend to anti-gay dictators”. Kirchick (who is also an assistant editor at The New Republic and an occasional columnist for the WSJ) specifically calls Penn a “useful idiot” who morally equates the US Guantanamo Bay prison to Cuban jails that house the Castro brother’s political enemies. Kirchick further points out that, “Fidel Castro ordered the internment of gay people in prison labor camps where they were murdered or worked to death for their “counter-revolutionary tendencies“”. Not to mention, Kirchick also points out that, “Raul Castro was notorious for ordering the summary execution of his opponents, including people whose only crime was their homosexuality.  This is the man with whom Penn was “in stitches” knocking back glasses of red wine.” But, best of all, Kirchick also quotes the president of The Human Rights Foundation as saying, “That Sean Penn would be honored by anyone, let alone the gay community, for having stood by a dictator that puts gays in concentration camps is mind boggling”. So, Sean Penn sips wine with a guy who threw gay people in gulags, but the people of CA should “anticipate their great shame” for voting for Proposition Eight? Interesting.

Now, it is also interesting to note that, in his column, James Kirchick also discusses the latest State Department human rights report on Hugo Chavez which sites, “unlawful killings, disappearances involving security forces, torture and abuse of detainees, harsh prison conditions, arbitrary arrests and detentions, official intimidation, attacks on independent media, violence against women, and trafficking in persons” as well as a multitude of other human rights violations. Not to mention, Kirchick also points out that Chavez is good buddies with Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, another enemy of America. Oh, but silly me, I forgot–the people of CA are the ones who should be ashamed because we all know that voting for Proposition Eight is far more heinous a crime than anything that Chavez or the Castro brothers have ever done.

By the way, James Kirchick even hits Sean Penn on visiting Iraq in 2002, to meet with cronies of Saddam Hussein. Kirchick states that, “There were principled arguments to be made against The Iraq War, and means of arguing against it that didn’t require the knowing exploitation of oneself as a propaganda tool for a totalitarian regime”. I’m sorry, but after reading this quote from Kirchick, I can’t help but think that Sean Penn has literally become the caricature of the idiotic Hollywood liberal that he was portrayed as in Team America (see video below).

Sean Penn Team America video

[On a side note, the Team America guys (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) must have really gotten to Sean Penn, because he wrote them a scathing letter that you all might be interested in reading, but I digress.]

Oh, and here is one other thing of interest about James Kirchick’s column.  The LA Times Blog wrote a piece about his column. In the their piece, the LA Times asked if Sean Penn was “a pal to anti-gay dictators”. Furthermore, the LA Times quoted Kirchick as saying that, Penn’s piece in The Nation was “a love letter to dictators” and as comparing Penn’s column to “the notorious dispatches of starry-eyed liberals sent back home during the early years of the Soviet Union, describing it as a “worker’s paradise”, neglecting to mention the disappearance of political dissidents, or any other such inconvenient truths about communism.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Now, it should also be noted that Sean Penn’s recent column in The Nation is not the first “love letter to dictators” or rogue regimes that Penn has written. In August of 2005, Penn took a trip to Iran and wrote five puff pieces about it for The San Francisco Chronicle. Mr. Penn begins his fifth column by claiming that the US (specifically the C.I.A.) has ties to a terrorist group called the MKO (Mujahedeen-e Khalq Organization). Now, Mr. Penn does site Newsweek and The Times of London as his sources, but provides absolutely no links or direct quotes to back up his claims. Furthermore, in his column, Penn writes about a sit down that he had with one of Ahmadinejad’s cronies, Hamid Reza Asefi (Penn describes him as likeable and smart), who is the Deputy Secretary and Spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry of Iran. Penn quotes Asefi as saying that, “Democracy is progressing every day”, even though in a previous paragraph, Penn admits that the recent presidential election was rigged and that no Iranian that he had talked to had said that they were going to vote for Ahmadinejad. Penn also quotes Asefi as saying that when the US leaves Iraq, that “they will not be well thought of”. OK, well what I’d like to know is why didn’t Sean Penn–being the gay advocate that he is–ask Mr. Asefi about homosexual rights in Iran, or human rights in general? Furthermore, why didn’t Mr. Penn also think to ask Mr. Asefi if it’s true that  Iran is killing American soldiers (I suggest looking at the pictures in this link)? Possibly because he was too interested in trying to tie the CIA to terrorism to remember to ask about Iran’s egregious record of human rights violations and it’s attacks on US soldiers.

Moreover, I’m sure that we are all familiar with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad famously saying that, “We do not have homosexuals in Iran” during his speech at Columbia University. Granted, Ahmadinejad is known for saying many wacky things such as calling the Holocaust “a myth”, calling for Isreal to be “wiped off of the map”, and calling for the destruction of the US, but I digress. However, if Sean Penn is curious, the reason why there are no homosexuals in Iran is because  they hang homosexuals in Iran (Allahpundit has a link to the photos in his blog that I linked to–I warn you, they are disturbing). Oh yeah, but I forgot. Silly me. It is the people of CA who voted for the ban on gay marriage (many of whom I’m sure see Penn’s movies) that should be ashamed–not Sean Penn for gallivanting around with anti-gay dictators, and for writing a puff piece about a regime that hangs gay people.

Oh, and on a side note, even the liberal Saturday Night Live realizes what a nutcase Ahmedinejad is and how crazy the Iranian government is (see NSFW video below), but somehow, Sean Penn thought that “CIA sponsored terrorism” was the big problem in Iran.

So, in conclusion, I am not advocating demonstrations and protests outside of Sean Penn’s pictures. Quite frankly, I’m not a sign-waving, protesty kind of gal–that’s not how I roll. Hey, this is America and everyone has freedom of speech (unlike Venezuela, Cuba, and Iran). Therefore, Sean Penn is free to say as much stupid crap as he wants–but I’m also free not to subsidize it. In other words, I’ll be damned if I’m gonna give my hard-earned money to some bozo (by buying tickets to his movies), so that I can help fund him to go prancing around the globe in order to sip wine with the world’s worst dictators and anti-American regimes, who commit egregious human rights violations, all the while having the unmitigated gall to tell his fellow Americans to “anticipate their great shame”, simply because they don’t vote on every issue exactly like he wants them to. Sean Penn’s behavior is well past the ridiculous and I’m not going to put up with it any more. By the way, this will not be easy for me because I actually do like a lot of Sean Penn’s movies and I think that he’s a talented actor (I loved “Mystic River” and “The Game”). However, unlike Sean Penn, I actually do have a sense of shame–which is why, until he stops acting the fool, I can’t support his extra-curricular activities any longer by buying tickets to his movies. Enough is enough. Here is where I take my stand.

Oh, and one more, thing. I’ll bet dollars to donuts that, after Sean Penn’s self-righteous, judgmental, turkey of a speech, the Academy is now wishing that they had given the Oscar to Mickey Rourke.

is technically not a dictator, he is in office with popular support, mostly thanks to his redirecting of oil money to the poor masses of his country.

Sean Penn is just an idiot though, its a lot of these celebirty liberals and causual liberals are just shallow idiots who are stuck up enough to pretend they aren’t and accuse everyone else of being the converse, and I say this as an independent with a lot of very intellectual liberal friends who could beat my arguments anyday.

Wasn't Hitler also popularly elected?

larueladue (Diary) Saturday, February 28th at 9:39AM EDT (link)

(I don’t remember for sure….) That doesn’t disqualify one from being a dictator… It is what they do when with the power once they are in office that earns them the title dictator.

Yes, but in a parliamentary system where the NSDAP

Achance (Diary) Saturday, February 28th at 11:09AM EDT (link)

had enough seats for him to become the chancellor when von Hindenberg’s government fell apart. After that the Nazis ruthlessly suppressed opposition so elections to parliament thereafter were not particularly free. Nevertheless, of the major combatants in WWII, Hitler’s Germany and Mussolini’s Italy were probably the most democratic. England had lots of rotten boroughs and its lower house hardly represented a one man, one vote ideal and the upper house made no pretense of democracy. The US had only recently extended the franchise to women, Blacks could hardly vote at all, likewise Indians in many places. The Soviet Union had sham elections but was by no means a democracy. China made no pretense. Japan was a parliamentary monarchy, but was essentially run by a military junta.

For all those believers in pure democracy, it should be noted that most of the Nazi horrors had the full sanction of a democratically elected parliament and the German legal system.

Hugo the Horrible’s last “election” is one of the most hotly contested of the last decade.

That Jimmy Carter spent a couple hours in Caracas and declared it valid does not mean a thing.

Hugo’s popularity has been on the slide for quite awhile. If necessary, I’m pretty sure he’ll do what every dictator does: Take power to “save the people from themselves…”

Sean Penn is part of the reason

Steph C (Diary) Saturday, February 28th at 6:45AM EDT (link)

why Hollywood needs a bailout. They don’t make movies people want to see because they put their political agenda front and center so people stop going.

This began long before the recession.

Even when they make a movie that people might want to see, the people don’t want to support this idiots. Creative guy said that Penn is an idiot. He’s right and he’s not even useful as one because he pushes more people away with his rhetoric than he draws into the socialist cause.

Given their sense of superiority I expect we’ll be bailing them out for a long time until we get the socialists out of D.C. and the states.

…and nobody gets to pounce on me for saying this, because we’re all for balanced opinions and evenhandedness…

Before the Academy Awards, people were being ABOMINABLY rude about Sean Penn and his performance in “Milk” (which was effing BRILLIANT, sorry), saying that they only way he’d win Best Actor is if they gave it to him because he was in the “gay movie”. Think what you will, but honestly, that was a low blow, and it was completely uncalled for. He said what he said (the whole “commie, homo-loving sons-of-guns” thing) as a low blow right back to the jerks who insulted him and his craft.

The award goes to the best performance, not to the best political platform, protest, or ideology.

I know I spend a lot of time complaining about politics infiltrating Hollywood etc. etc. etc., but it goes both ways. After the jump (which I applauded him for–I have no tolerance for unfounded insults), his speech got rude and completely out of line, and I do agree that he’s 99% pinhead 1% brilliant actor, but I still need to add a “fair and balanced” perspective to what he said—–before he went off the deep end.

I stopped beleiving that the Oscars are based on merit (“award goes to the best performance”) about the same time I stopped beleiving that the Nobel Peace Prize committee doesn’t have a political bias.

Let’s face it, if there’s a movie about gay people and/or aids from a major studio, it will get nominations it doesn’t deserve and will win awards far beyond what it really merits.

It has become more political over the years...

navychick1993 Sunday, March 1st at 1:22AM EDT (link)

When Brokeback Mountain was nominated a few years ago, the industry went on a media blitz to try to influence the Academy’s vote. Look at all the anti-war movies that were released while President Bush was in office; they didn’t do well at all. Yet, in LaLa land (I grew up here in sunny Southern California) it was all the rage. So when this Harvey Milk movie came out, during a presidential election year, and not to mention with Proposition 8 on the ballot here in California, there was no way that Hollywood would bypass an opportunity to influence something.

Sean Penn is a good actor…use to be one of my favorites. I stopped supporting him when he started his world tour of hypocrisy. My list of actors/actresses that I no longer support has grown quite long in these last few years.

That is understandable for us (probably not for them as they stupidly continue in their ways), because we can NOT see them in their parts anymore – just as liberal kooks… Acting is a job – politics is a profession for some of them…too bad…

However, I really didn’t mean for my diary to be about the usefulness of The Academy Awards per se. It was meant to be about the hypocrisy of Sean Penn. Acutally, gay marriage is not a hot button issue for me.

In the case of liberal California they took it to the people for a vote and they said “no”. Seems like peope had spoken and that should be end of it. What really annoys me in the aftermath is that Christian groups are being tageted for having funded opposition, as if they shouldn’t be allowed to participate in the political process. The fact that the African American community voted 70% against the measure is ignored. Hispanic groups were also strongly against it. No, the crosshairs are focused on the “bigoted, white, Christian fundamentalists” (smoking sarcasm intended).

One other thing, I don’t think the Academy regrets Penn’s speech. They got exactly what they wanted and would have expected no less. As soon as Prop 8 went down I said Penn would win (I should have put money down).

Thanks for a great diary; you covered a lot of ground, and summed up what a lot of us have been thinking since last Sunday. This GWM was probably as disgusted as anyone by Sean Penn’s lack of decency and professionalism, but obviously not surprised, either. Like you, I looked forward to the show and watched most of it up until that point. Just about everyone else at the Oscars comported themselves with dignity, and most focused on the people that really are important—-their fans, i.e., the customers.

Either Micky Rourke or Frank Langella would have been better choices for Best Actor; better yet, Clint Eastwood could have been nominated for “Gran Torino”, leaving Penn totally out of the proceedings. But then again, this is Hollywood.

On that note, there is a silver lining from the ceremonies: the Brangelina duo got shut out totally. I’m sure that somewhere, Jon Voight was smiliing…..

And yes, I agree with you that it would have been nice to see Clint Eastwood nominated for “Gran Torino”.

Sean Penn isn’t worth that much thought, effort, or even ink. (virtual though it may be)

Check out the link to Penn's "letter" to the Team America guys

Next93 (Diary) Sunday, March 1st at 2:55PM EDT (link)

I’m a firm beleiver that the quality of one’s writing is a direct reflection on inteligence and education. It’s pretty clear from that link that Penn writes like he was still in high school, and has an eigth-grade grasp on grammar and punctuation. I’ve never read Rosy O’Donnel or Barbara Streissand’s web sites, but I’ve heard that the same things can be said of them.

This actually fits what I’ve heard of Hollywood; most actors were barely able to get out of high school and *maybe* a year at UCLA (high school with cigarettes). There are some notable exceptions (Gil Gerrard was a chemical engineer, Lisa Kudrow has a degree in Biophysics, Alicia Witt is some sort of scary smart, and Morgan Fairchild an IQ in the genius range), but for the most part these “luminaries” fit the pattern of “stupid, uneducated, and easily led” (which explains the large numbers of Scientologists among Hollywood stars).

Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.

Yeah, I agree with you....

Susannah (Diary) Sunday, March 1st at 3:42PM EDT (link)

Which is why I posted the letter even though it was slightly off topic. I thought that it gave good insight into Penn’s character (he can dish it out, but he can’t take it), as well as his true understanding of world events.

someone's probably said this already but...

I haven’t paid to see a Sean Penn movies since Fast Times. not because of his political views, hell, if you go by that criteria you would never see anything again.

No, the reason is because his movies are ALL ATE UP WITH THE SUCK!

after seeing Heath Ledger win for Best Supporting Actor, I turned the Oscars off.

The fact they completely ignored The Dark Knight for any of the major awards completely blew my mind. TDK was universally praised by fans and critics alike, it made a billion dollars at the Box Office, and yet it was not good enough for the Academy because it’s a comic book film and it may present the merit of political views they disagree with.

The fact they nominated “The Reader” in it’s place–a holocaust film about a Nazi pedophile played by Kate Winslet– shows why the Academy Awards looses viewers year after year after year.

The Oscars Are Not The People's Choice Awards

EzOnTheEyez Monday, March 2nd at 5:29PM EDT (link)

The Oscars are supposed to be about achievement in film making – not necessarily achievement at the Box Office. That’s what The People’s Choice Awards are for. The Dark Knight was a very good movie – especially for a summer blockbuster, but The Reader was certainly a more deserving nominee for Best Picture.

The movie that didn’t belong as Frost/Nixon, but I would have filled its slot with Doubt instead of The Dark Knight.

Madonna.... that's the clue sis. A solid clue.

NEVER EVER WATCH THIS KIND OF DUDE.

Okey for your fine entertainment, I recommend that you watch the Obama Real-Time movie. It’s a 4-year series actually.

You’ll find Obama as a much much better actor than Sean Penn (to say the least)…. and even better than Denzel W.

Penn Deserved the Oscar

EzOnTheEyez Monday, March 2nd at 5:24PM EDT (link)

It’s just too bad it had to come with the acceptance speech because, while I vehemently disagree with Sean Penn’s politics, he deserved that Oscar. I certainly don’t make a habit of watching Sean Penn movies, and Milk may be the only one of his that I’ve ever seen.

Demerit where it’s due and credit where it’s due, too.

Demerit to Penn for being such an ignoramus. Credit for doing a great job in Milk. It was a very good movie.

Straying just a bit…I kind of think that Doubt should have won Best Picture. I was just kind of underwhelmed with Slumdog Millionaire. That Doubt wasn’t even nominated while Frost/Nixon was, however, was a miscarriage of Oscar justice! Maybe Sean Penn could take up that cause instead of promoting authoritarian collectivism. It’d be much more worthwhile cause and he obviously has much more influence with that electorate than the general public.

You could be right....

Susannah (Diary) Monday, March 2nd at 6:34PM EDT (link)

I said in my diary that “Milk” “looked to me like it sucked”, which is why I didn’t see it–not because I’m some Archie Bunker type who hates gay people–as Penn implied (which I found to be offensive). However, there have been a lot of movies that I didn’t see in the theatre because I didn’t initially get a good first impression of them, but when I saw them on cable, I thought that they rocked (“Michael Clayton”, “Walk the Line”, and “No Country for Old Men” are three such pictures).

Furthermore, I agree with you that Penn is a talented actor, as I stated in my diary (I’ve seen a lot of his prior movies). However, my need to do the right thing by my country overrides my need to be entertained. My suggestion to someone who likes Sean Penn’s movies, but doesn’t want to contribute to his extra-curricular activities would be to wait until his movies come on cable. If you watch them on cable, then your money is going to the cable company–and you have to pay the cable bill whether you watch Penn’s movies or not. However, when you buy a ticket to one of Penn’s movies, your money is going directly to Penn (who frequently produces the movies he stars in), and the people who hire him. Also, Penn’s future asking price for signing on to a picture is determined by how much money his movies make at the box office and how many DVDs they sell (so I wouldn’t buy the DVDs to his movies either).

Anyway, my point is, just look at what happened to Tom Cruise. He was behaving obnoxiously and the American public got tired of it. So, what did they do? Well, they didn’t do any melodramatic protests like some people did with The Dixie Chicks (which I think was over the top). No, people just quietly stopped going to see his movies and now Cruise has changed his behavior and is acting in a much more humble fashion. Therefore, I think that if people just quietly stop going to see Sean Penn’s movies (and stop buying his DVDs), then maybe he might be motivated to tone down his behavior a bit.

Oh, and on a side note, I will take your advice and see “Doubt”, but I was already going to go see “Slumdog Millionaire”, because, to me, that movie looks awesome.

I Knew What You Were Saying

EzOnTheEyez Monday, March 2nd at 7:07PM EDT (link)

I think that Slumdog Millionaire was good, and I’m certainly not going to say that it wasn’t a deserving Best Picture winner. To me there wasn’t a runaway winner this year, and I think that I was underwhelmed by Slumdog simply because my expectations for it had become so elevated by the buzz around it.

I totally get where you’re coming from on the financial support of Penn, though, and I usually do the same.

It’s funny that you mention the Dixie Chicks, though, because when I was in a Gringo’s at the airport in Mexico City this morning getting a cup of coffee before my flight back to Houston I heard this song and began to think, “That voice sounds familiar” but couldn’t place it for a few seconds before I realized it was Natalie Maines’s voice (or “the little piggy one” as Ann Coulter hilariously referred to her.) I had to chuckle thinking about how they have totally disappeared from the scene after hacking off their base – country music fans.

I thought, “Well, I hope it (the political statement and the Grammys) was worth it to them.”

So…the ruckus over the Dixie Chicks may have been outsized (although I certainly enjoyed it…in part because I think it’s annoying that a group whose lead singer has such a limited range could make it so big) – but it was quite effective I think.

What's ironic though....

Susannah (Diary) Monday, March 2nd at 7:58PM EDT (link)

….is that the bruhaha over The Dixie Chicks (although effective like you said) looks kind of silly now in retrospect. I mean, Natalie Maines looks like Bill O’Reilly (in the patriotism department) compared to Sean Penn. Think about it. Natalie Maines criticized the President, right before we were going to invade Iraq, on foreign soil–which I definitely agree is a no-no. However, England is an ally of ours, and I don’t think this was some deliberate pattern of behavior on her part. To be fair, I think that she just got caught up in the heat of the moment and got carried away.

However, as I have clearly demonstrated in my diary, with Sean Penn, it is a deliberate pattern of behavior on his part. Furthermore, he didn’t just get a little carried away and criticize the President in England one time. Sean Penn has been, literally, visiting America’s enemies during wartime (Iran, Iraq, Cuba, and Venezuela), and has been writing puff pieces and making glowing documentaries about anti-American, human rights abusing dictators, and accusing the US of terrorism–all the while telling his own fans and country men that they should be ashamed of themselves, instead of thanking them on the night that he wins an Oscar. However, people were, literally, rioting in the streets over Natalie Maines one screw-up, but they were willing to give Sean Penn a pass for his world tour of treason?! That’s just completely illogical to me–which is why I so strongly felt the need to speak up on this matter.

I’ve always been a pro-gay conservative, it’s nice to know that I’m not alone.

I find the Hollywood types are better ignored off screen. I think that he deserved the award though, he did an excellent job in Milk. And anyway, isn’t this what the Oscars are all about – obscenely wealthy people dressed in haute couture clothing talking about how we should feed the hungry and just seeing the irony. I thought that was the appeal.

I am a supporter of the Canadian Green Party, but forgot to mention that when I came here to troll around.

Susannah (Diary) Tuesday, March 3rd at 10:53PM EDT (link)

I must ad, though, that even though the Oscar’s have always been somewhat ripe with hypocrisy, I feel that Penn’s hypocrisy is much more dangerous to the country than a bunch of over-paid celebrities dressing up in over-priced clothes while yammering on about feeding the hungry. Sorry, I just had to throw that in. :-)

Oscars=Hollywood loving on Hollywood

Andy W. Tuesday, March 3rd at 1:25PM EDT (link)

The A.A. is really just Hollow Woods way of saying, “I love me.” Isn’t it? The Academy is made up of the artists themselves and anyone else they chose to allow in. Why does it surprise us that the selections for nominees and the actual winners are incongruous to popular thought?

As was said earlier, it’s not the People’s Choice Awards.

Sean Penn and his ilk are here to stay as long as folks pay to see their work.

Unfortunately, people will pay.

Keep up the good work Sam Graves (R, MO-6)

Any MORE tickets?

“Fast Times at Ridgemont High” was the last movie with Penn in it that was worth a darn. Haven’t seen anything since, not because of politics, but because he makes lousy movies.
