Tim Scott MUST Win – This Is Not Negotiable!

Promoted from the diaries. -ed.

OK – as many of you are aware, I recently wrote a diary about a congressional candidate from Charleston, SC (my hometown) by the name of Tim Scott. Tim Scott is running for Congress to represent the 1st district of SC in the US House of Representatives. The Republican Primary took place on June the 8th and Tim Scott won with 32% of the vote, followed by Paul Thurmond who took in 16% of the vote. Tim Scott will now face Paul Thurmond in a run-off in less than two weeks. (There were a total of nine candidates running in the District 1 Republican Primary, so it was inevitable that there was going to be a run-off, because it would be close to impossible for any of those candidate to get to 51%.)

So, now that we are are down to the wire, I thought that I would play a little game of compare and contrast with the resumes of the final two candidates.

Tim Scott has served thirteen years on the Charleston County Council–and, he has been in the SC House of Representatives for the last two years where he is currently the first black Republican state legislator since Reconstruction. Mr. Scott has impeccable conservative credentials, because he is just one of eleven candidates to have been endorsed by The Club for Growth (who also endorsed Marco Rubio and Pat Toomey). Michael Barone also acknowledged that Tim Scott was the most conservative candidate in the SC District One race, when he wrote the following–

“Interestingly, Haley is the daughter of Sikh immigrants from India. If elected governor she would be the second Republican governor of a Southern state, after Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, to be the child of immigrants from South Asia. Who’d a thunk it? And when you’re putting your mind around that, consider that the leader in the Republican primary for the open South Carolina 1 seat relinquished by retiree Henry Brown is Tim Scott, who may be the most conservative and assuredly is the only black Republican in the South Carolina legislature. He led Paul Thurmond, son of the late Governor and Senator Strom Thurmond, by a 31%-16% margin; in third place with 14% was Carroll Campbell, son of the late Congressman and Governor Carroll Campbell.”

Actually, Tim Scott won by 32%, but the rest is correct.

Now, as far as charisma goes, Tim Scott has it to spare–in fact, he has it oozing out of every pore. I have embedded two videos below of Tim Scott. The first one is his excellent advertisement that points out that he wrote the anti-Obamacare legislation in the SC House of Representatives. The second video is of a speech that Mr. Scott made before RNC members in Myrtle Beach, SC–and it is just made of awesome (watch the first 12 minutes of it if you don’t have time to watch the entire thing–that should be enough to give you an idea of who Mr. Scott is and what he is about).

OK–so now that I’ve told you about Tim Scott, I thought that I’d tell you a bit about Paul Thurmond. Paul Thurmond is the youngest son of the late Strom Thurmond. He got elected to the Charleston County Council in 2006, but decided to retire at the ripe old age of 33 (Tim Scott is 44), after serving only three years there. He is now running for Congress at the age of 34–that’s it, the end. I’m serious–that’s really all there is to his resume.

And as far as his conservative bona fides go, I can’t really tell you one way or the other, because HE HASN’T DONE ANYTHING YET.

Oh, and here are Paul Thurmond’s television ads for the SC District 1 race. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that they are both in the top five WORST ads that I’ve ever seen.

Did you hear that? He said that he was “a conservative problem solver” and he has a family. Well, my mailman’s “a conservative problem solver” and he has a family–he solves the problem of getting me my mail everyday. Does he get to run for Congress? Do I? I’m “a conservative problem solver” as well.

Oh, and did you catch the end? “It’s not the name”, but it really is, because why the heck else would you bring it up? Besides, what else is he running on again? Oh yeah, silly me. He’s “a conservative problem solver” (whatever that is).

Now, let’s look at Mr. Thurmond’s next ad shall we?

Omigod–is it over?! Can I look yet? Man, that was all kinds of terrible! “Thad and little Fletch”?! Is he serious with this foolishness? If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear that ad was a parody. But hey, I guess if you don’t have any real accomplishments or legislation under your belt (like writing the anti-Obamacare legislation for SC), then “Thad and little Fletch” it is. (Don’t get me wrong–his children are adorable, but come on. This an ad for a congressional seat, not a home movie.)

Oh, and did you catch the beginning of that ad where he had a picture of him and his dad? Oh, but he’s not running on his family name….now, if somebody could actually tell me what exactly he is running on, I would love to hear it. Oh yeah. He’s “a conservative problem solver” (rolls eyes).

And finally, at the beginning of that ad, it mentions that Paul Thurmond is endorsed by Authur Ravenel Jr. Who is he you ask? Well, he is a prominent politician from Charleston from a very old Charleston family (there is a historic home in downtown Charleston, built in 1845, named after his family) whose son, Thomas Ravenel (who was the SC state Treasurer) was sentenced to federal prison for buying and distributing cocaine. (Arthur Ravenel Jr. was a Democrat in the 1950’s, but became a Republican.) Oh, and Arthur Ravenel is a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, is highly in favor of flying the Confederate flag over the SC State House, and referred to the NAACP as the “National Association of Retarded People”. Whoa–this guy’s a real class act isn’t he? (And by “class act”, I mean a real scumbag.) Let’s just say that I’m not at all surprised that Mr. Ravenel is in favor over ANY guy named “Thurmond” over Tim Scott, but I digress. (Seriously Mr. Thurmond–you thought that it was a good idea to begin your ad with this guy’s endorsement?!)

Oh, while we’re on the subject of endorsements, that previous advertisement also said that Paul Thurmond was endorsed by Representative Thomas Hartnett who has been a SC politician since the 1960’s–he was originally a Democrat in the 60s, but he became a Republican in 1972.

So now, I bet you are curious about who got what endorsements the day after the Republican Primary. Well, the day after the June 8th Republican Primary, Paul Thurmond–the guy who came in a far distant second–picked up three new endorsements. I’m not kidding. Paul Thurmond–a second rate, unqualified hack of a candidate (Tim Scott is, literally, FIVE TIMES more qualified than him–he has 15 years in elected office and Paul Thurmond has 3), with the charisma of vanilla pudding got three endorsements in less than 24 hours after he LOST BY A TWO TO ONE MARGIN.

[One a side note, are you starting to notice a pattern here? That every ancient, entitled, pork barreling, SC political hack, who was friends/acquaintances with or worked with Strom Thurmond, is now endorsing Paul Thurmond over Tim Scott? It's quite obvious to me anyway. Oh, but I forgot. Paul Thurmond is a breath of fresh air whose going to change Washington by owing his election to a bunch of SC political hacks who have been in Washington for decades (rolls eyes).]

And, one of Paul Thurmond’s endorsements was from the guy who came in third in the primary, Carroll Campbell the third, who is the son of a former governor (Carroll Campbell Jr.). But, Carroll Campbell III has never done anything much except be a lobbyist. Oh, so he’s kind of similar to a lot of SC political hacks in that he has the following mentality—

(In my whiniest voice possible…..)

“My daddy was somebody big and important, so that makes me big and important! So I deserve this seat dammit!! And besides, who does that Tim Scott think he is working hard and playing by the rules and not participating in dirty, backroom politics?! Doesn’t he know how things are done around here??!! Doesn’t he know that your supposed to have a famous daddy and that we’re supposed to “scratch each others backs” to get ahead? Well, if this goody two shoes wins the Republican Primary, then I’m going to take my ball and go home and endorse the other guy with the famous daddy who will do more favors for ME! Me, me, me–it’s all about me! (Pouts and stomps foot.)”

Now, I realize that some of you think that I’m being a little hard on Mr. Campbell–well, I’m not! When Tim Scott first announced that he was running for Congress, Mr. Campbell blasted Mr. Scott for having the very temerity to throw his hat in the ring when he said the following–

“Tim Scott will be trying to run for his third office in just two years; abandoning what appears to be a failed campaign for Lt. Governor. Mr. Scott is just another politician in a string, all scrambling over one another to get into a campaign I have been in for nearly a year. The people of South Carolina are tired of political opportunists.“

OK–first of all Tim Scott didn’t have “a failed bid for Lt. Governor”. To put it bluntly, Carroll Campbell is shamelessly lying. In fact, in his first ten days in the race for Lt. Governor, Tim Scott raised a whopping $150,000 and was considered to be the front-runner. However, then Henry Brown’s seat opened up (and Tim Scott, for some strange reason, was not told ahead of time that it was going to open up), and Tim Scott decided that he would rather be a Congressman instead. (No Mr. Campbell–it was you who had a failed bid for Congress. Deal with it.)

Also, what I find to be extremely rich, is that Carroll Campbell’s father, literally, made a career out of perpetually switching elected offices in SC. Furthermore, he is now endorsing Paul Thurmond–a guy who didn’t even finish his first four year term in the Charleston County Council in order to run for Congress (not to mention, Mr. Campbell, himself, is not remotely qualified for this job either). So, let me get this straight. Carroll Campbell (and a lot of the good old boys in SC) seems to have a different set of rules for himself, his father, and Paul Thurmond, than he does for Tim Scott–who, by the way, has served more time in elected office than Mr. Campbell and Paul Thurmond put together. I would love to know, what other rules would Mr. Campbell like Tim Scott (and the rest of us) to follow that he and his cronies don’t have to follow?

As many of us know, Erick Erickson has written the following about the circus that was the SC Republican Gubernatorial Primary–

“Down in South Carolina we are seeing another one. Pulling the noose ever tighter, stringing everyone along, the good old boys in South Carolina don’t want the uppity Indian lady becoming Governor because she’s made life too miserable for them.”

Well, it looks to me like the good old boys in SC don’t want Tim Scott to become a US Congressman either, because they sure aren’t wasting any time rallying around the ridiculously unqualified and bland Paul Thurmond over the experienced, charismatic and Club for Growth endorsed Tim Scott.

Oh, and to all of you smarmy, entitled little parasites who think that you can sandbag great candidates like Nikki Haley and Tim Scott by lying about them because you are jealous or threatened…well, I’ve had enough of peering into your heads (I feel like I need to to take a shower right now), so I will let Daffy Duck do my talking for me–

Now, I think that I have definitely made it quite clear that the old guard in SC doesn’t want to see Tim Scott elected to Congress. However, I know that many of you are feeling complacent right now and think that it doesn’t matter, because Tim Scott is going to win anyway (due to his overwhelming victory in the SC Primary). Well, don’t get too comfortable, because Jim DeMint came in second in his first Republican primary, but won in the second round by consolidating all of the anti-David Beasley votes. (David Beasley was DeMint’s opponent in the run-off who beat him in the first primary.) In other words, Paul Thurmond is trying round up all of the good old boys/establishment/anti-change votes right now as we speak, and win in the second round. We can’t afford to rest on our laurels.

On a side note, the SC good old boys are not the only enemies that Tim Scott will face going forward during the next two weeks. The Democrats, the left and the Daily Kos crowd will also be out to take Tim Scott down as well–and they will use every dirty trick in the book. Let me put it this way–who do you honestly think that Nancy Pelosi wants to win the SC District 1 race? Paul Thurmond or Tim Scott? Tim Scott would be Nancy Pelosi’s WORST NIGHTMARE, because he could mortally wound the race card, and he is an extremely charismatic speaker who can cleverly attack Obama, all the while wearing a smile on his face (and he has the potential to become a conservative rockstar). On the other hand, Paul Thurmond would be the answer to Nancy Pelosi’s prayers, because she could use him as a club to beat us over the head with again and again. Oh, and we know exactly how much respect liberals have for black conservatives–just ask Clarence Thomas and Charles “Minstrel Show” Blow.

Oh, and as far as the MSM and the left goes (I know, same thing), don’t think that they aren’t watching this race, because they are. Remember how nuts the MSM went when Joe Wilson shouted “You Lie!” at the State of the Union, and how they wrote articles tying him to the Confederate flag? Well, that’s mere child’s play compared to what the media will do to the state of SC if Tim Scott loses to Paul Thurmond.

In fact, a couple of days ago, Jon Stewart gave us a glimpse of the humiliation that SC would be in for if Tim Scott loses to Paul Thurmond. (The ONLY reason why I can watch this video without breathing through a paper bag–the one that I’ve saved to cover my face with if Nikki Haley and Tim Scott both lose–is because it is now evident that Nikki Haley’s going to win.) (H/T Allahpundit of Hot Air–go to 4:30 in to see the SC bit.)

OK–so if Jon Stewart did that to us over some idiotic state legislator calling Nikki Haley a “raghead” and a couple of lying morons claiming to have slept with her, then can you imagine what he is going to do to SC is we elect Paul Thurmond instead of a MORE QUALIFIED, MORE CONSERVATIVE, MORE CHARISMATIC BLACK CANDIDATE?! Take the humiliation sandwich served to us in that previous video and cube it (because, of course, Stewart is also going to bring up Joe Wilson, the Confederate flag, and the Nikki Haley circus when he mocks SC–yet again–for acting like idiots and going with Paul Thurmond).

And finally, as I stated previously, the MSM is well aware of this race and don’t think for a second that they aren’t. Two days before the SC District 1 Primary The Washington Post wrote the following about this race–

“The offspring of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond and the late Gov. Carroll Campbell could be edged out by Tim Scott, the first black GOP state representative since Reconstruction.”

Did you read that? They referred to him as “the offspring” of Strom Thurmond (that’s one step removed from calling him “the spawn” of Strom Thurmond). No, the media is like a hungry cheetah stalking this race–they are sitting up on their perch watching us, just waiting to pounce and take out the weakest gazelle when given the right opportunity.

And, I know what some of you will say…”But Susannah, it’s not fair to hold his name against him”. And my reply is, first of all, who told you that life is fair? All the MSM will care about, is that we elected an unqualified guy named “Thurmond” over a more qualified, more conservative, more charismatic African-American who was a far superior candidate. Period. Second of all, Paul Thurmond made it about his name when he decided to run before he had any real accomplishments under his belt (what else–pray tell–is he running on?). The media will humiliate us in SC–and the Republican Party in general–with this because it will be fun for them. And worst of all, we will have no defense, because Tim Scott is such an obviously superior candidate. We will have to assume the position and take it–and, it will also kill our chances of appealing to future minority recruits and voters. We will be like that gazelle in the video. Well, you know what? I’m tired of being that gazelle. I would like–just for once–to be the cheetah instead. When Tim Scott came in first the other night, Bill Kristol called it “an amazing moment”, and Juan Williams’ face lit up with both surprise and pride. I would like the story, the night of the SC run-off, to be about another “amazing moment” in Charleston, SC–instead of just providing more fodder for The Daily Show.

So in conclusion, I don’t think that Paul Thurmond is a bad guy–-I just think that he got a little greedy. I think that he saw an opportunity and he took it without thinking of the consequences. If he came back and ran in ten years–and got some real experience and accomplishments in his own right–then I promise to give him a fair hearing. However, he is just not ready yet.

Now, as far as Paul Thurmond’s endorsers go, I realize that a few people might think that they are motivated by racism, but I don’t think that’s the case. I think that they are, like Paul Thurmond, motivated by greed, as well as jealously (just like with Nikki Haley, they are jealous of a young upstart with more talent than themselves). Tim Scott didn’t get just one of eleven Club for Growth endorsements without ruffling some feathers. Mr. Scott has ALWAYS been extremely anti-earmark, and I’m sure that doesn’t sit well with the good old boys in SC. However, Paul Thurmond has always been, at best, quite wishy-washy on earmarks. In fact, he told the Politico the following with regard to earmarks–

“I’m not willing to say I’m not for earmarks if we have them.”

Furthermore, Paul Thurmond told The Post and Courier that he was critical of Tim Scott’s stance on earmarks. The Post and Courier wrote the following about Paul Thurmond’s position with regard to earmarks, and his critiques of Tim Scott’s position

“Some of the early sparring points already have surfaced, with Thurmond saying Scott’s across-the-board opposition to earmarks could cost much-needed dredging dollars for Charleston Harbor, while Scott said budgets need to be tightened in D.C., with dredging pursued through the open bill-writing process.”

Now, contrast Mr. Thurmond’s statements with the statements that Mr. Scott makes about earmarks in his awesome new ad (embedded below) and you tell me who you think that the good old boys of SC would rather have in power.

Alright–now tell the truth and shame the Devil. If you are a “Me, me, me–what’s in it for me?!” kind of politician, then which one of these two men would you endorse? Yes, Paul Thurmond is indeed the correct answer.

So, in conclusion, rarely in life do you have such a clear-cut opportunity in life to do the right thing. Usually, there are some nuances or shades of gray involved–and, you might look back with 20/20 hindsight and say “Man, I really should have done X instead of Y”. However, this is not one of those times. This time, there is a bright, red arrow pointing in a specific direction with the words “This way to do the right thing, Dummy!” in flashing lights above it. The right thing for SC–and for the Republican Party–is to get Tim Scott elected to the US Congress as the first African-American Representative from Charleston, SC since Reconstruction. Guys, I’m telling you, we will all seriously regret this if we wuss out, because Mr. Scott has enormous potential and could become a great force to be reckoned with in Washington, DC (and, right now, Paul Thurmond simply could not). Let’s kick the tires and lights some fires people. Let’s get Tim Scott elected to Congress. Who is with me?

We need more people like Tim Scott to WIN in this party.

Gamecock favors Tim Scott but there is no basis for attempting (you failed) to to smear Paul Thurmond

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 7:23AM EDT (link)

The irrelevant mention of the son of Arthur Ravenel was especially un-called for.

Have you checked the criminal records of all the sons of those that have endorsed Scott?

There is no reason to cut Thurmond down based on what Thurmond has said and done so far. Thurmond may yet resort to low blows, but he hasn’t yet and I doubt he will. If he actually says and does something that warrants criticism, I’ll be with you, but quite frankly, I wish you would remove the gratuitous negative innuendo and irrelevant attacks of smoke from this post and just leave the comparisons of their experience without the snark, especially in this primary.

It is not Paul’s “fault” that he is the son of a legend and it is not a negative to be endorsed by some very fine people, many of whom’s children sin in their life. Who knows Suz’, maybe one day you will have a child that sins. I have.

I would agree that Thurmond probably should not go into the ad production business, but this is for a congressional seat and for that, what matters is how they will vote on some fairly easy issues, and the fact is that BOTH of these men would vote conservative 99% of the time.

For real clear-cut choices, you will be better served saving the vitriol for real evil: DEMOCRATS!

Lady Gamecock, your work on Scott is great, but Strom, despite his past sins, repented and was a GREAT senator and has raised a fine son that does not deserve this level of attack. The Thurmonds have never been known for negative attacks.

We can elevate Scott without trying to tear down Paul. Scott is more qualified but Thurmond is not unqualified. Voting yea or nay is an easy job.

Scott for Congress!

…..But you’re wrong. Paul Thurmond began his ad titled “Family” by saying that Arthur Ravenel endorsed him, so it is relevant (look on the embed). And I did not “smear him”, I quoted Ravenel’s exact words and linked to sources to back me up. Since when is directly quoting someone “smearing” them? Furthermore, Ravenel smeared himself IMHO when he he called the NAACP “The National Association of Retarded People”, and made putting the Confederate flag on the State Capitol his raison d’etre. Furthermore, when Thomas Ravenel was an up and coming Republican SC politician and was working for Giuliani when he got busted for drugs—his father, Arthur Ravenel, took over his son’s position for Giuliani. The spectacle of both Ravenels had a very negative impact on Guiliani’s campaign, because the MSM and the DNC used it against him. You really think that they don’t look this kind of stuff up? (See the links below.)

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2007/06/26/giulianis-south-carolina-adviser-has-controversial-history-with-naacp/?fbid=cThFshEdOXq

http://www.allamericanpatriots.com/48726568_rudy_giuliani_rudy_giuliani_giuliani_should_condemn_ravenels_racist_comments_says_dnc

The reason why I haven’t checked the records of the people who have endorsed Tim Scott, is that he’s only gotten ONE endorsement since he beat Thurmond 2:1! It is Paul Thurmond who got most of the endorsements (you know, the unqualified guy who finished a distant second)–both before, and after the race.

So yes, who these guys are is important. And, they are the good old boys in SC–, Ravenel, Thurmond, Campbell, Hartnett,, etc….they are ALL bigtime political legacies/families that have been around forever in SC. Oh, and funny coincidence–they are all endorsing Paul Thurmond, a fellow legacy, instead of Tim Scott. Come on Gamecock–it is extremely obvious to anyone what’s going on here.

Second of all, I NEVER said that it was Paul Thurmond’s “fault” that he was Strom Thurmond’s son. I said that it would look extremely bad to have Strom Thurmond’s son defeat a MORE QUALIFIED, MORE CHARISMATIC, AND MORE CONSERVATIVE BLACK CANDIDATE WHO WAS ENDORSED BY THE CLUB FOR GROWTH. That is the plain and simple truth. The end. Just like the word is round, the sky is blue and gravity is a force of 9.8 m/s squared downward. You have to except the world as it is, not as you want it to be. In fact, I even wrote that I didn’t think that Paul Thurmond was a bad guy–that he just got a little greedy. In fact, I even wrote that I would give him a fair hearing, if he ran again in a few years, after he had some real experience and accomplishments. Therefore, I’m obviously not saying that he should be ruled out forever because of his father’s name.

However, I am saying that he should be ruled out, for now, because he is ONLY running on his father’s name. I mean, the name of his second ad is called “Family” and it opens with a picture of him and his father together–and then says that he was endorsed by Arthur Ravenel–the ultimate Charleston good old boy. So what is it? You can’t have it both ways. He is OBVIOUSLY running on his family name and endorsements from these ling time SC pols, because he hasn’t done anything yet. And yes, he is unqualified to run for Congress. Do you really think that he would be running for Congress, after just three years on the City Council, if his name was Paul Smith instead of Paul Thurmond? I highly doubt it.

And finally, I will be more than happy to vote for him, and even support him, if he comes back in a few years with ads titled “Accomplishments” and “Experience” instead of “Family”.

X0X0, Suzi

PS–I didn’t say one bad word in my diary about Carroll Campbell Senior (or Strom Thurmond for that matter). I just exposed Carroll Campbell Jr. to be a hack who was running on his daddy’s name (because he has never even served elected office), who then had the unmitigated gall to trash Tim Scott and lie about his record and whine about him getting in the race (and I provided a link to his own words). Pathetic.

The use of the word "family" in an ad is your excuse? Doesn't change the fact that the criminal record of the son of an endorser is irrelevant. You are not thinking gal.

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 12:54PM EDT (link)

To seize upon that word in an ad to justify associating irrelevant dirt with Thurmond’s name does not justify the use of same.

I’m all for comparing experience, but what Ravenel’s son did has ZERO to do with Thurmond’s qualifications in any way.

You should edit your column.

I have been involved as a campaign manager and other capacities many times and have always found that primary contests often bring out the worst in people, mainly due to the lack of disagreement on the issues.

So folks seek out ways to distinguish and attack on, and it too often devolves into bringing up things like this. I loathe it and have for decades.

In fact, in my last two campaign gigs, I came on only AFTER the primary. But I would be against this Ravenel reference even against a Democrat. It is irrelevant.

All families have skeletons in the closet, some just have them walking around. (My Dad told me that one when I was achild while we were dealing with some our our family’s mobile skeletons!

This smacks of the kind of gotcha “journalism” that caused me to get into journalism in the first place in 2001.

Your justification of the dirt/guilt by association is lame and you should edit the column. I got into this business to try and add relevant information to the trash in the MSM.

So he uses the word family and you seize on that to insert that drug charge reference?

Shame on you.

Love ya (tough love today)

cock-walski: Reminds me that one reason I don’t like the overbroad and overuse of “SC good ole boys” as a pejorative is that

SC has been governed pretty well by these establishment types for decades that were in the forefront of the conservative movement and managed the state’s finances well; improved education relative to the nation as a whole; and brought growth to the state better than the nation as a whole throughout the 70-90s and into the 21st C.

I prefer to strongly criticize the INDIVIDUALS that transgress on policy and negative attacks on a case by case basis rather than branding whole groups.

pss

And remember, I support Haley, Scott, Paul, most all the tea partiers coming into the party, but we also already have a lot of strong conservatives who didn’t have to drink tea after a communist took over DC!

And about that job-quiting attack on Paul…see Sarah Palin (I love her too, but she did quit her much bigger job!)

Paul Thurmond is running strictly on family name and endorsements.....

Susannah (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 1:38PM EDT (link)

….Not accomplishments, Peroid. Therefore, it is much more relevant who endorses him than Tim Scott–who, by the way, is running on accomplishments. Check out Tim Scott’s ads. Does he even mention what ancient SC politicians have endorsed him? No, he does not. Why? Because he is running on his record.

As far as Thomas Ravenel’s drug use, that was a big national story, and Thomas Ravenel was an up and coming national politician in his own right. He wasn’t just Arthur Ravenel’s son. He almost beat Jim De Mint for Senator in the Republican Primary in 2004, and he was SC State Treasurer when he was working for Guiliani’s campaign and got busted for drugs. Oh, and Thomas Ravenel beat a WWII hero that had served as State Treasurer for 36 years, but then Ravenel only served a total of six months, before pleading guilty to a felony (see link below). My only point in bringing Thomas Ravenel up (and maybe I should have made this point more clear in my diary, but my diary was already so long as it is) was to show the power of the good old boy network in SC. And, to point out that name goes a long way. In other words, if your daddy is someone important, well then, it’s A LOT easier for you to get ahead. Thomas Ravenel ALMOST became a US Senator before he had ANY experience in elected office (although he was a successful businessman). If Thomas Ravenel was just some random kid of one of these politicians (who wasn’t involved in politics), I NEVER would have mentioned his name. However, that’s simply not the case. He was someone that the SC Republican Party had high hopes for (that’s why this information was on his father’s Wikipedia page).

http://www.thestate.com/2009/12/08/1060525/tax-steward-former-treasurer-patterson.html

Oh, and just to prove that Thomas Ravenel’s drug bust is common knowledge–here is and excerpt from The State about Grady Patterson’s obituary (Patterson is the guy Ravenel beat for state treasurer, the link is above)–

“Patterson was elected for the first time that year. He went on to hold the post for a total of 36 years.

After he lost the office in 1994 to now-Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom, Patterson won it back four years later. He was defeated by Thomas Ravenel in November 2006.

Ravenel won, in part, because he convinced voters that Patterson’s conservative investments meant the state had missed an opportunity to profit from the bull stock markets in the 1990s and 2000s.

Ravenel later resigned in a drug scandal.”–

Furthermore, to compare Paul Thurmond to Sarah Palin is ridiculous. Sarah Palin held several elected offices before she became governor. Furthermore, the last time I checked, she’s not running for anything. If she ever does again, then yes, we all know that her quitting will be an issue. Duh. Paul Thurmond has three years on the City Council. That’s it. Nada. Zip. Zero. Nothing else. Just to let you know, it does not besmirch Strom Thurmond in any way to admit that Paul Thurmond is utterly unqualified for this job. The sky won’t rain down fire, cats and dogs won’t be living together, and gravity won’t reverse itself. I promise that everything will be OK–and so will Paul Thurmond. Maybe then, he will go out and get some real experience, instead of just running on legacy, and will come back in a few years and be a formidable candidate.

He was a politician in his own right.

The concept of a "good old boy network"

Blueblood Friday, June 11th at 2:27PM EDT (link)

is useful and real. That said, the concept now includes African-Americans and women, and thus the term is dated.

I can think of 7 African-American politicians that hold or held their parents’ seat or hold a major office in their parents’ sphere of influence. Jackson, Jr., Meeks, Kwame Kilpatrick (elected mayor of Detroit at age 31), Harold Ford (first elected to Congress at the age of 26 before passing the bar), Gov. Patterson, Andre Carson, and William Clay.

These types of networks give advantages to legacies and entrenched interests, so Susannah and Erick are not putting down white Christian men in SC by using the term “good old boy network”, they are just using a term to describe a type of political network that exists in various parts of our nation.

Btw, Jackson, Jr. ran for US Congress at age 30 and defeated Obama’s mentor in the primary who thought she could win the seat because she thought she had a deal with that particular “network” that included Jackson, Sr. After losing, she then tried to get back her old seat that she had promised to Obama. Obama then used his Harvard Law degree to get her kicked off the ballot. So this is an example of legacy and a “good old boy network” at work in Chicago.

As much as we all like Ronald Reagan, the bar has been raised beyond party politics and those family and personal connections. We want reform-minded representatives who will listen to us and not career politicians or those with major ties to them who are entrenched in Party politics and merely recite talking points. Not only do we want to change the Republican Party from the ground up, we want to select our candidates without any interference by the Party. Without posts like this, it won’t happen.

Susannah, I was going to diary this myself, but you did a much better job than I ever could have

constitutionalconservative (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 5:16AM EDT (link)

Local knowledge matters. And you are dead right on both substance and optics (as for substance, Jim DeMint said some very kind words about Scott’s position on earmark reforms today– He didn’t leave much doubt about where his sympathies lie in this contest)

Scott has been endorsed by a broad variety of economic and social conservatives in this race, and is CLEARLY the best candidate on substance.

And as Susannah notes, the optics matters as well. This story is a bit off the national radar now, but it is not going to be in two weeks, win or lose. As Susanah wrote about that second alternative.

“All the MSM will care about, is that we elected an unqualified guy named “Thurmond” over a more qualified, more conservative, more charismatic African-American who was a far superior candidate. Period”

There’s no reason in the world that should happen. Instead, if we do our jobs, the national story out of South Carolina is going to be that the conservative state GOP has nominated two outstanding minority conservative candidates for high office. It’s going to be how the winds of change are blowing through the GOP and the conservative grassroots are leading the way.

We’ve got a chance to show everyone that we’re the party of Nikki Haley, Bill Connor and Tim Scott, not the party of Jake “Raghead” Knotts.

I made my first donation to Tim Scott today. I’d urge all the folks here at RedState to join me.

Thanks for your donation Constitutional Conservative....

Susannah (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 12:41PM EDT (link)

I totality think that you hit it out of the park when you wrote the following–

“We’ve got a chance to show everyone that we’re the party of Nikki Haley, Bill Connor and Tim Scott, not the party of Jake “Raghead” Knotts.”

This is definitely our chance to do that. Now, if DeMint would endorse Tim Scott, instead of just complementing him, it would be even better. Paul Thurmond got the overwhelming majority of the local endorsements after the Primary the other night, so it would help big time if Tim Scott got DeMint’s.

Take care and thanks again.

"a LEGACY of leadership"...Carroll Campbell III's slogan

Blueblood Friday, June 11th at 6:21PM EDT (link)

“A Legacy of Leadership” was the slogan of the Carroll Campbell campaign. Remember, the guy has never held elected office and his late father was a popular governor and the architect of the Republican party in SC with the same name as his son. Campbell endorsed Thurmond after finishing 3rd.

Susannah is correct about these guys running on their names, what else could that slogan be referring to? Below is a link to his website with the slogan,

http://www.carrollcampbell.com/

Btw, just to expand on Susannah’s point about Campbell’s criticism of Tim Scott. Campbell’s father lost one race out of many. The one race was for Lieutenant Governor in 1974, this is the office Tim Scott considered running for before running for the newly open US House seat. Campbell’s father was a member of the state House having won the seat in 1970. After he lost the race he then ran and won a seat in the state Senate 2 years later in 1976. Two years after that in in 1978 he won a seat in the US Congress. So I am not sure why Campbell would criticize Tim Scott for doing something his very influential and still popular father did in the 1970s.

What does Arthur Ravenel, Jr. have to do with any of this?

shadowtax (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 7:27PM EDT (link)

I attended Charleston County GOP meetings for a while back when Thomas Ravenel was running for Senate. I remember when “Cousin Arthur” would show up from time to time. He sure was revered by party members. My understanding was that he made the GOP in Charleston what it is today. He ran repeatedly as a Republican for various offices until he got into Congress in 1980. They named that gargantuan suspension bridge after him after all. His endorsement is a fair accomplishment for Thurmond, whom I agree has a thin resume of accomplishments.

Is membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans and supporting the flying of the Confederate flag, racism per se? If so there are many many racists in this state who may surprise you by voting for Scott anyways, because to them those positions are about heritage, not race. But I know Jon Stewart doesn’t understand that.

The NAACP comment was in bad taste, but was wrapped up in the flag controversy. Tensions were high. South Carolina really wants to put that behind us. I don’t know how it helps Scott to bring that issue up again.

Thomas Ravenel has even less to do with Paul Thurmond than his father. Is it really necessary to play connect the dots with every SC GOP sin back to Paul Thurmond when we have a great candidate like Tim Scott? Not at all.

I was Haley-Scott before Haley-Scott was cool (not that I will ever be cool.) I liked what both of them have to say on this issues. It is great that they scramble conventional notions of identity politics. However, I do not want this election to be about race and overcoming history. I had enough of that nonsense in 2008.

You just answered your own question....

Susannah (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 8:19PM EDT (link)

…..You asked “What does Arthur Ravenel Jr. have to do with any of this?”, but then you say the following—

“His endorsement is a fair accomplishment for Thurmond, whom I agree has a thin resume of accomplishments.”

So why would such an important, revered man give his endorsement to a candidate who has such “a thin resume of accomplishments”?

Well…..sorry, I’m at a loss as to why, unless it’s about payola or legacy. I mean, you just admitted that it wasn’t about “accomplishments”.

Second of all, Paul Thurmond must have thought it was a big deal, because he began his advertisement with Ravenel’s endorsement–he obviously wasn’t trying to “put it behind him”. If you’re going to make endorsements the center piece of your campaign (and Paul Thurmond has to, because, like you said, he has no accomplishments) ,then you have to expect people to examine whose endorsing you and why.

The Thomas Ravenel part is, literally, one sentence–everybody in SC knows about Thomas Ravenel (it’s in the papers all the time). I only mentioned it, because it’s another example of legacy over competency in SC (which appears to be what a lot of these SC politicians are about).

And finally, I never called anybody racist–please don’t put words in my mouth. In fact, I wrote that Thurmond’s endorsers were not motivated by race, but by greed and jealousy (and I never even mentioned his supporters).

Oh, and to answer your question, I don’t think that being a member of the SCV makes you a racist–I only mentioned that to point out that the Ravenel’s are part an old SC powerful political family that’s been around a while (that’s also why I mentioned The Ravenel Home). However, I do think that fighting to keep the Confederate flag flying over a PUBLIC state house, that people of all races have to walk by, is ridiculously insensitive (and a colossal waste of time). I don’t care if you feelings are hurt about your “heritage”.

Lastly, to say that the NAACP comment was “in bad taste” is the understatement of the millennium. Ravenel insulted both the mentally disabled and African-Americans with that remark. And, yes his bridge is great, but some people wanted it renamed because they were so outraged that he made that remark (and it didn’t help matters that he made it at a rally for the Confederate flag). So, therefore, I NEVER would have started my ad with his endorsement, because that’s not the message that I would want to send to people–however, you are free to disagree. I promise that I won’t call you a racist if you do.

Race issues.

shadowtax (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 11:04PM EDT (link)

You raised them. Thurmond’s resume is thin enough as it is. You felt it necessary to do a take down on Arthur Ravenel, Jr. The cited controversies involve southern heritage. You dismiss them, but they remain emotionally charged issues. That is a fact.

I appreciate that you don’t care about my feelings. Unfortunately, I am not of southern heritage and therefore not emotionally invested in any of this. I really wish it would go away, The race-bomb can be set off with subtle tangential attacks. I am simply able to cut a 70 year old man a break for making a very insensitive remark when he is angry. How many times can somebody call you a racist, going so far as to organize a boycott of your state, before you say something rude? Race relations are complex in the South. I am sure you know that. Your brief discussion portrays an admittedly effective caricature of Mr. Ravenel for the purpose of attacking Mr. Thurmond.

I agree with you completely that Arthur Ravenel is an establishment figure. I pointed out that he practically founded the GOP. He has had a long career. There are avenues of criticism which steer clear of race/heritage issues, but they would require more research and is much less emotionally satisfying.

Sir, this is the last thing that I'm going to say to you.....

Susannah (Diary) Friday, June 11th at 11:39PM EDT (link)

…And, the reason why I don’t care about you feelings is because you didn’t seem to care too much for mine when you falsely accused me of calling Thurmond’s endorsers racists, when I, specifically, said that was not the motivation. The only person who is playing the race card here is you (you keep bringing it up).

Furthermore, if you had really read my diary, you would know that I mentioned Mr. Ravenel because I was mentioning ALL of Paul Thurmond’s endorsers, and why someone with his qualifications–or lack thereof–got so many so fast. Arthur Ravenel was not the ONLY endorser of Paul Thurmond’s that I mentioned.

Oh, and I am of southern heritage and damned proud of it (I am “invested in it”). I wouldn’t have it any other way. You say, “How many times can somebody call you a racist, going so far as to organize a boycott of your state, before you say something rude? ” Well I say, if you know that people are trying to label you–and the rest of you state–as racists, then stop handing them the club to beat you over the head with by having ridiculous demonstrations where you insist on flying the Confederate flag over the PUBLIC State Capital building. Fly it in your own yard and leave everyone else alone.

PS–You’re wrong about something else. Ravenel didn’t found the Republican Party in SC. The late Srom Thurmond, the late great Carroll Campbell Jr.,and Arthur Ravenel all founded the Republican Party in SC. And, Arthur Ravenel and Carroll Campbell the third both endorsed Paul Thurmond (Surprise!)–who you admit is the less qualified candidate! Hello!! This is exactly my point. (Oh, and I wasn’t exactly kind to Carroll Campbell the third either).

Now, I say, good day to you Sir!

Here is an article about Ravenel...

Blueblood Saturday, June 12th at 12:51AM EDT (link)

From the Post and Courier in May of 2008,

“Arthur Ravenel Jr. can’t remember exactly what he said last month during the heat of the moment at the school district office, but he admitted Friday that he used the word “bitch,” and he regrets it.”

http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2008/may/24/arthur_ravenel_i_used_word42131/

Ravenel has done some good things for Charleston, but I agree with Susannah that his endorsement of Thurmond is a negative because it just looks like politics as usual. Politics as usual is not good for the nation and will not reduce the deficit.

Thurmond’s “position” on earmarks (or lack of a position) is troublesome with regard to the deficit. Scott’s endorsement by the Club for Growth is a big positive and indicates that he will attempt to reform Washington and reduce the deficit.

Superbly written and thoroughly engaging. Candidates like Tim Scott don’t deserve any less.

I don’t think Tim (or the diarist) has a problem with the good ol’boys de per si. There are plenty of career politicians who are excellent conservatives. The problem is with those who have been immersed in politics for so long, who have involved themselves in the machinery of the government so deeply, who have entrenched themselves so much into the apparatus that manages that they forget the most basic principle of conservatism: the limits of politics, the limits of government and why those principles are essential for the subsistence of liberty. For example, the earmarks. it amazes me that so-called conservatives seem honestly unaware of the dangers of earmarks.

I think it was Kristol (Sr.) who used to say that religion was “the only power that can shape people’s characters and regulate their motivation”. That’s also a fine description of the effect that earmarks exercise over the legislators of a republic – it shapes their character, their motivations, eventually the institutional arrangements of our nation and ultimately it leads to the corruption of the republic and its people. It’s not only about the money wasted in crazy ass projects who add nothing to the public good (that would be bad enough); it’s mostly about how it creates a culture where the main goal of the legislator is getting elected and the easier and most effective way to do it is by bribing his constituency with their own money, In the end, if others are using this clever scam and your electorate is paying for it, why not get yourself into it? And if it’s okay to pay for a theatre festival on your district with money that doesn’t belong to you in order to please your voters, or some road nobody is going to use to be agreeable to your donators, why not take care of bigger things, that can bring joy to a larger number and inflate your glory proportionally ? It’s just money and it’s not even your money. It’s not even your voters money because you can keep borrowing and taxing the unborn who still can’t vote. And then you start believing that you’re really using others people money the way it should be used, that you know better, that you’re “putting the money to good use” – the “fatal conceit”, the insane idea that government, which is comprised of a few creatures of God as flawed and limited as any other, can and should control the future’s unfolding. That with the immense power on your hands (and the astonishing ambition and hubris in you mind that you’re oblivious to) you can change the world for the better – and that living in privilege is a just reward . And suddenly you’re just another socialist, narrowing the liberty of your fellow citizens, that in your eyes have become nothing but children in statu pupillari, in the name of what you believe it’s a common good, be it managing health-care or automakers, that most probably they don’t share.

However there are those who get it and see it differently. They see that without earmarks legislators would be judged not by how much can “give” but by how much they “take away”. Ergo, that the best way to protect their seats is to take away as little as possible from their constituency – not more that the strictly necessary to assure peace, order and respect for each other liberty and property. The earmarks tragedy isn’t about whatever percentage of the budget wasted on them de per si; it’s about the perverse scheme of incentives created by them that invariably and fatally leads to a perpetual take-over bid for the purchase of the resources of the individuals and their ability to live in liberty, make choices, take responsibility for their actions and find happiness in doing so,

Tim Scott is aware that governing must be a specific and limited activity and not a pursuit of glory – and that’s why deserves the support, the time and the donations of American conservatives. He gets it.

Thanks cordpt....

My observations are those of an outsider.

Flagstaff (Diary) Saturday, June 12th at 6:01PM EDT (link)

I don’t know anything more about the candidates than I saw here. I have to say that Scott’s campaign ads were more professionally done and spoken better than Thurmond’s, whatever that means; neither one radiates a lot of charisma IMHO, and I’m a guy that thought Fred Thompson was charismatic in 2008.

I really liked Scott’s statement that “What we need is courage; we need a backbone and some common sense.” Since “Conservatism with a backbone” has been on my signature line for a couple of months now, I have to like it, don’t I? But seriously, he’s saying what needs to be said and I didn’t hear that in Thurmond’s ads. And I couldn’t agree more with the need for courage–courage indicates a willingness to endure pain in order to reach a goal, and sometimes political goals are so long-term that there’s a lot of pain.

It appears to me that Scott is the right candidate, regardless of the fact that you are right about the racial aspect, the appearance that South Carolina voters would rather have an average white guy in office than a superior black man. “Average” and “superior” are the key words there, not “white” and “black.” Too bad the general public couldn’t make that distinction in 2008 between “glib” and “sincere.”

The montage of 40 inspirational speeches was a super editing job. The key quote for me was Jimmy Stewart as Senator Smith, “And I’m gonna stay right here and fight for this lost cause.” We need more good men who are willing to fight for lost causes to get some practice at fighting, to be ready for the winnable battles. It fits right in with backbone and courage.

Susannah (Diary) Saturday, June 12th at 6:28PM EDT (link)

….that “average” and “superior” are the key words here.

However, I do think that Scott came across as extremely charismatic in that speech he made to RNC members in Myrtle Beach, SC (it’s the second embed in my diary)–I loved the little frying pan that he whipped out. And, I thought that he showed a lot of grit/charisma (I think grit is charismatic) in his second ad. Just my opinion.

Oh, and I’ve seen Tim Scott speak in person, and trust me, he is an extremely effective speaker against the Obama agenda–and, he lights up a room. People really respond well to him.

“We [the Republican Party] lost; they [Democrats] didn’t win.” And he means because they turned their backs on their supporters. “The message matters.”

His message at the 18 minute mark is outstanding. Thought-provoking and inspiring.

I’m glad nobody misunderstood what I said after “Scott is the right candidate.” I didn’t express my thought very well. Should have said “even disregarding” instead of “regardless.”

The only way we take back our country’s political system is to vote out the establishment politicians who seem to be about representing themselves over their constituents.
Personally I want to vote for qualified candidates who are not connected to generations old political families or groups. We need politicians who don’t come loaded down with decades old debts and with allegiances split up amongst everyone but who they are supposed to be representing.
We need a class of new representatives not stained by politics as usual and the only special interests they owe anything too are the citizens who voted for them.
