Exposing Peggy Noonan: Are You Part of Her Secret Club?

Peggy Noonan is an elitist. She’s a good one too. Being an elitist involves displaying exceptional manners and grace. Noonan does both. Her polite, calm demeanor often obscures her passions. She doesn’t allow herself to become too emotional. To do so would be undignified.

But Sarah Palin has gotten under her skin. There is something about Sarah that has Noonan unhinged. Without any effort, Sarah has exposed Noonan’s latent snobbery. Sarah also exposed the hypocrisy and superficiality of Noonan and the elitist class that Noonan so desperately seeks to please.

There is too much ammunition to dump on Noonan all at once, but this an amusing article. In 1997, Noonan wrote about raising her son to be gentleman. Noonan crowed:

My son knows, for example, that you do not call adults by their first names unless asked to do so; you do not answer a call with “What!” but “Yes?”; you do not interrupt others unless you really have to, as in, “Excuse me, Aunt Patty, but your nose is on fire.” You do not turn to a person who just sneezed and say, “Ooooh, d’ja get any on ya?”.

You Betcha Sarah gets under Noonan’s skin!

Noonan married late in life and divorced only five years later. She bore only one child and raised him alone amongst the glitterati of New York City. Being wealthy and raising a single child in NYC, a parent like Noonan can afford the luxury of raising Junior in accordance with the aristocratic rules of etiquette. That’s a luxury a small town working mother of five doesn’t have.

This is one source of Noonan’s irritation with Sarah; not ideology; not talent; not intelligence; but raw class snobbery and contempt. Sarah and her whole family are the antithesis of what Noonan considers ‘proper’. One can almost imagine Noonan, divorced and alone, sitting in some Upper East Side condo, sipping pinot blanc, snacking on raclette, and sighing, grimacing and lamenting over Sarah’s every small town colloquialism and idiosyncrasy.

Noonan, instead, is focused on teaching her son the proper etiquette of opening doors. She writes to her son:

you will be a member in high standing of an invisible but honored group called The People of Politeness, who recognize each other wherever they go and honor each other with secret nods.

Yes, that “invisible but honored group called The People of Politeness”. Perhaps it is Sarah’s home grown wink and nod that upsets Noonan. Palin, not being one of the ‘honored group’, didn’t earn the right to give the ’secret nod’. That’s like a biker wearing colors before they were officially sworn into the gang. The latter gets assassinated. The former gets their character assassinated.

Noonan writes frequently about manners and grace. This is Noonan’s cause. This is her rebellion:

I realize I am asking him to observe old forms in a new world. But I prefer the old forms and think they should be continued, and if this is at odds with reality, well, reality will have to live with our rebellion.

Sarah observes some ‘old forms in a new world’ too like killing and cooking her own food and honoring the institution of marriage. But I guess those don’t count in Noonan’s class.

In Noonan’s world, manners and grace even transcends post modern feminism:

I tell him that in fact feminists think it’s wrong for a boy to bow to a lady, as they feel this might suggest women are weaker; and, anyway, they don’t want women to be ladies, they want them to be I-Am-Woman-Hear-Me-Roar persons.

I know of a few conservatives who are “women-hear-roar” persons too. Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Michelle Bachman and, what’s her name … Sarah Palin come to mind. Each are probably too brash for Noonan’s liking. Conservatives are suppose to be meek and polite. Fighting back with ferocity and passion requires bad manners and that is the biggest ‘faux pas’ of all.

Simply, to Noonan, Sarah is white trash. Sarah is classless, uncouth, abrupt, loud and divisive. Sarah is not worthy of her ascendency.

Noonan was Reagan’s speechwriter. It’s Noonan’s party in her mind. How could white trash from Alaska become the most important and powerful woman in her party? Sarah annoys and frustrates her. Noonan wants her gone.

Noonan still thinks she holds the keys to the kingdom; that she gets to define ‘proper’ conservatism and ‘proper’ conservative women. All she is holding on to is the legend of herself that she created in her own mind. She is a pathetic, useless has-been.

Noonan is stale toast.

She jumped on Reagan’s bandwagon and rode it until the shiny new Obamamobile came along. She is now just a bitter, aging lonely woman who is clearly jealous of Sarah Palin’s life and everything she represents.

My copy of What I Saw at the Revolution is now warming up the local landfill.

btw, I see nothing wrong with being polite and respectful to others. Noonan is a traitor to her party, that is quite the Faux Pas.

And Noonan only uses four letter words off camera.

I also read Noon’s “What I Saw at the Revolution.” My recollection is she comes from the “working class” and through hard work she’s obtained a college education and learned to “speak and write good.” And was lucky to get aboard Reagan’s bandwagon. Now she wants to make sure she continues to get invited to the “correct” (as opposed to the “right*) New York parties.

I stopped listening to her after her infamous off-camera (and thought, by her, to be off a hot mike) comment, in reference to McCain’s selection of Palin, that “This is bull***t.”

REALLY shouldn’t be commenting on politics. That said, I don’t think Noonan is necessarily wrong about McCain’s decision having been motivated by the a”narrative”. OTOH… Hutchinson?!

If articles like this appeared in newspapers then they wouldn't be going broke.

Swamp Yankee, you made me laugh so hard. Not with ROFLM bot non-sense off but just with your clever wit. It is soooooo true. I don’t mind Noonan because the truth is that she is from Irish descent and being one myself she comes from rebel blood. Get off you high horse Peggy before your mamby pamby son has to prove his pugilistic prowess.

I’m sure she didn’t teach him those tactics while she was sipping tea and munching on cucumber sandwiches.

The enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived, and dishonest - but the myth-persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. JFK

I read Mrs. Noonan's article today...

mrdadx6 Friday, July 10th at 5:47PM EDT (link)

And was at once shocked at the attempted hatchet job, but at the same time realized that Mrs. Noonan must be saying what most conservative pundits feel: that Sarah Palin is worse than an empty suit.

They seem to feel that Sarah Palin is a grasping, fame-obsessed, vacuous, empty suit. Sort of a female Bill Clinton without the alleged “mastery of the issues.”

Mrs. Noonan also derides fans of Sarah Palin in her article. Mrs. Noonan and I have been moving in different directions, politically, for about the last six years, but it seems very much that she has something specific and personal against Sarah Palin, much as did Jim Pinkerton against George W. Bush.

This is clearly what YOU are saying. Speak for yourself man.

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. Peggy Noonan is so pathetic as to think....

JadedByPolitics Friday, July 10th at 6:35PM EDT (link)

she can continue with her hatred and jealousy that somehow in this new world of the internet she is can continue her bile and not get called out for the Vichy Republican that she is. What Peggy and the other 95 corridor Vichy Republicans don’t seem to realize is that in the GOP there are about 80 percent more of us REAL PEOPLE ie: Conservatives in this party then there are of her SNOT NOSED cherished and dear Vichy (Rockefeller) Republicans and in the next wave (repeat of 94) of Republicans taking the House in 2010 will only build on the Conservatives that remain.

She had better take some advice and SHUT UP because she is only relegating herself to obscurity in quick order. WE will not go to the left in the next election we will be going RIGHT and it will be beyond her comprehension how many of those running are everyday people just like Palin because that is what the American people what…REAL PEOPLE…people who come from our state who respect the Constitution and are about limiting government to it’s original purpose and giving back to the states that which is theirs!

Perhaps the WSJ will learn that to have an op-ed writer who is talking down to your readership is not perhaps a means by which to make money. NRO learned that lesson with Kathleen Parker. Here is hoping they wake up because they otherwise have a fine paper. I want to let Rupert know that if he thinks that Peggy Noonan speaks for the Conservative base perhaps he ought to go out to middle America and hear what we have to say about that. OBTW Peggy WE rubes out here do read the WSJ we just ignore you.

and you can have a lot of class, and little money.” My construction worker, 10th grade educated father taught me that. I have never forgotten that saying and have tried to pass it on to my kids. It is an excellent way of having a decent and educated view of the world, no matter your background.

Peggy Noonan, seems to have little real class, and I feel sorry for her.

I actually sort of agree with her

aesthete Friday, July 10th at 10:05PM EDT (link)

But could she have put it in a more unintentionally hilarious and snobbish way? That was one of the most cringeworthy articles I’ve had to read in a while, unfortunately. I don’t see what it has to do with her dislike of Sarah Palin, though.

BTW, is it just me, or does “The People of Politeness” sound like a cult waiting to happen

Swamp_Yankee Saturday, July 11th at 11:01AM EDT (link)

“I don’t see what it has to do with her dislike of Sarah Palin, though.”

Because its a class thing. Noonan abhored Palin from the beggining. Read her recent hit piece. Her most recent book is called “Patriotic Grace”. She’s hated ‘red meat’ conservatives, bad manners, people who talk straight, small town American colloquiallisms. She’s an elite writer of an elite society.

If you read Noonan’s latest in its entirety, her contempt is apparent. But this is a woman who gloats that her boy answers questions with “yes” and not “what”

There is another angle her too and its the bitterness of professional women who sacrifice family and children for a professional and cosmopolitan life. That’s a topic for a whole other diary.

Oh, OK

aesthete Saturday, July 11th at 2:20PM EDT (link)

I was aware of her irrational dislike of Mrs. Palin, but I wasn’t aware of her crusade against rural conservatism. That’s just petty of her! I suppose that I would probably resemble one of her “People of Politeness”, but I despise people who use their “decorum” as a weapon against others. I’d rather have a blunt, down-to-earth “small-towner” over a “polite” person who obscures his intent with flowery-sounding verbiage anyday: at least you know where the former stands.

Politeness for the sake of

Hi, I'm a retread of diakrioi. Thursday, July 16th at 9:20AM EDT (link)

politeness leads to self-righteous behavior. Eventually, the thin veneer will wear off and one’s prideful core will show thru. That is what we are seeing with Miss Noonan. She never learned that it’s just an act if you don’t mean it from the heart.

Peggy is showing signs of early onset Barry Goldwater disease - in which one drifts to the left as the end of life looms large.

Thanks Swamp

for the very clear definition of ‘elitism’ in politics.

Truly, Noonan is a clear example of such disease plaquing Washington, the MSM and sadly …. some quarters of the GOP.
