Kelly Ayotte; One Tough Mother

I’ve often defended Kelly Ayotte, but I have to admit that one may have a hard time trying to reconcile her looks and her demeanor with her record… “This is that tough as nails, ace prosecutor that everyone fears? She looks more like a pre-school teacher.”

But Kelly is tough and that is part of her appeal in the granite state. Outsiders may not understand her popularity because they do not know the person. Kelly has generated a tremendous amount of good will in her home state for her grisly work as a prosecutor. As noted in the Union Leader:

To read accounts of Ayotte’s work over the next couple years is to descend the depths of human depravity and murder most foul… Ayotte’s job included attending autopsies and going to scenes “where there are very difficult things to see. You never lose an appreciation for the horrible nature of the cases or the impact they have on the families involved,” Ayotte reflected.

Among the cases Ayotte helped prosecute were the three youths who butchered two teens at Salem’s Hedgehog Park; a deliberate drowning in a Somersworth pond; Vaclav Plch for murdering a Manchester woman and dismembering her with a saw; James Dale for raping and suffocating a 6-year-old Hopkinton girl in her own bed; and the double murder of Dartmouth professors Half and Susanne Zantop. In 2008, Ayotte secured the capital conviction of Michael Addison for slaying Manchester police officer Michael Briggs.

The 2002 Zantop convictions earned Ayotte a $1,000 raise. During her 11 years as a public prosecutor, Ayotte must have turned down opportunities to double or triple her salary by joining a private law firm.

Kelly made a habit of turning down higher paying, less stressful jobs. She loved the Attorney General’s Office and she loved the work. When she joined the Attorney General’s Office, she was the youngest prosecutor on the staff at the age of 29. Six years later, she was Attorney General of New Hampshire. In a field where many attorneys struggle, grow bitter or burn out, Kelly thrived.

This diary is about Kelly, but its also a diary in support of due diligence. Conservative activists must select candidates wisely. Being a conservative may be the most important criteria, but its not the only criteria. Picking the best candidate requires more than a cursory examination of position papers.

Kelly’s work speaks volumes about her character and the people of New Hampshire have noticed. If you want to know someone, listen the people who know them most intimately. Sometimes, the locals know best. There is a reason this mother of two is soaring in New Hampshire. Trust me, she’s a lot tougher than she looks:

I think we can hold out for the most conservative candidate this year. That may or may not be Ayotte. I’m open to all arguments.

I think any Republican can easily win this seat against Hodes, as the Dims have been wiped out here much like the GOP was in 2006. Had this been 2008, Ayotte would have been an ideal candidate to hold the seat (much better than Sununu). In 2010, we have the luxury of picking the most conservative choice.

Those weren’t bad years for the GOP, yet Ovide lost be double digits twice. In a terrible year for Hodes and the Dems, he still hasn’t shown he can pull ahead of Hodes. Ayotte will crush Hodes.

Ovide talks the talk like a lot of candidates this cycle, but he’s been in hiding for 15 years. I dont know why that makes him a “real” conservative.

He’s a polarizing force, ran a terrible race, destroyed the party, packed up his toys, went home and ignored the party when it needed him. Now the wind is at our back, he decided he wants to be the next Doug Hoffman (that before he wanted to be the next Scott Brown) (and after he went to the NRSC with his hands out).

Anybody can beat Hodes, just read the recent Rasmussen polls…

I know you do not like Ovide but at least admit Lamontagne, Binnie and Ayotte are ahead of Hodes…

You fail to mention that Lamontagne beat Zeliff , a RHINO sitting congressman with the backing of the Washington establishment , in a statewide election…

If he could beat Zeliff , he can beat Hodes and the polls say he can..

Last time I checked , the same things you are saying about Lamontagne are the same tired things RHINOs used to say about Reagan…

Reagan was a polarizing force because he ran against President Ford and was too conservative to appeal to the mainstream…

Reagan destroyed the party and was responsible for Carter beating Ford….

Lamontagne is a classic conservative who not only understands what that means intellectually but also understands how to apply those conservative principles to actual problems..

He is a policy wonk who speaks with substance and with soul, a great combination if you are a conservative…

Unfortunately, Ayotte talks like a prom queen running for student counsel president…

If you get past the talking points her handlers give her, she looks like a deer in the headlights…

I think she is a nice person but she has all the makings of a Shaheen lite… the moderate that the Democrats can work with ???

We do not need another Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe…..especially someone the RNC controls like a puppet with money strings….

Show me one, any area where she differs from Ovide? The only difference between her and Ovide is that she is competent. She was not crushed in a good GOP year. Personally, I’d take a candidate who polls great, raises good money, is a rising Conservative star, over a recycled has-been that can’t raise the money to defeat Hodes.

Lamontagne never would agree that it was legal for the state to take over a privately funded malpractice fund just because the state needed money to cover all of Governor Lynch;s spending programs..

Lamontagne clerked for a federal judge and is a partner in one of the most respected law firms in the nation and he is one of the most respected commercial litigators in the state….

I fail to see how Ayotte is more competent than Lamontagne in terms of the legal profession….

She used all the earmarks and stimulus money she could get her hands on when she was in the AG’s office and now says she is opposed to both and says she had no choice but to spend the money…

John Stephen was in the Head of Health and Human Services and came up with ways not to spend money….

Point is when she had a department to run , she used all the stimulus funds and earmarks she could get her hands on., not a wringing endorsement for someone who wants us to believe she is a fiscal conservative…

I could go on but go see for yourself, ask both of them to answer a substantive policy question and I bet Ayotte will give you a few talking points and mumble something about a commission and Lamontagne will give you a thoughtful, substantive response that will make you say this is the kind of person that should be a United States Senator from New Hampshire….
