All Law Abiding Patriots Have a Basketball Team to Root for Now

It really doesn’t matter what one thinks of Arizona’s immigration bill, this is ridiculous.

Even if the law has some minor flaws, it is a duly enacted law supported by the majority of the people. This type of grandstanding is preposterous and I don’t care about the demographics of the fans.

According to the Politico article:

The Phoenix Suns on Tuesday announced that they will be wearing an alternative jersey identifying them as “Los Suns” during Wednesday’s playoff game to voice the team’s disapproval for Arizona’s tough new immigration law.

Robert Sarver, the team’s managing partner, said in a statement that the alternative uniforms will be worn during Wednesday’s home playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs in order to voice opposition to the law that Sarver said is not the “right way” to handle immigration reform. The Suns won the first game of the series Monday night.

“The frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the issue of illegal immigration resulted in passage of a flawed state law,” Sarver said. “However intended, the result of passing this law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question, and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.”

Hey Robert Sarver, just shut up and play the d*mn game.

This offends me as a conservative and as a sports fan. The conservative and legal arguments are well known, but sports also serve a role in our society. For many, sports are an escape from the worries and stresses of every day life. It bonds families, friends and communities despite racial and ethnic differences and political affiliations.

The people of Arizona will turn on the Suns game for a few hours, so they can escape their crappy jobs, their financial problems, their family troubles, their government and, yes, all the bickering about this law. Its a respite, and sometimes people need a respite from the real world. So who is Robert Sarver to take that away from them?

Injecting a sensitive political topic into a playoff game is disrespectful to the game and to the fans, who paid their hard earned money to support that team. Robert Sarver is a joke. He should be forced out of his position, so he can run for political office, which, apparently, is where his heart lies. He should not get to sully a national pastime and trample on the passion of millions to make a political statement about a domestic policy supported by the majority of Arizonans and Americans.

Pick a team, any team. The Spurs have good guys on their team and good fans. The Celtics have one of the most politically incorrect mascots in all sports. The Jazz hail from the most conservative state in the union. Pick one, any one — just not “Los Suns”.

In another case of profiling, special operatives will be at the gates of the next Suns game.

The refrain, “Show me your tickets” will be heard, which is obviously a racist ploy to keep the huddle masses of NBA fans without tickets from attending this event. President Obama is considering asking AG Holder to deploy special lawyer teams to make sure that the inspection of tickets is done in a Constitutional manner.

    And the beat goes on.

What’a Ya think Game, well dressed men in bow ties observing that ticket checkers to make sure there is no racism at work when people are ask to “show me your tickets”?

Beer sales would improve with l those minors saying they are old enough and vendors taking their word for it.

beer sales in los Suns casa de locker and ownership’s private box are a profit maker! No, I’m talking about a more fundamental point. America can’t be America if Mexico moves here; nor can Arizona, locker rooms and owner’s boxes.

Go Lakers. Been a Laker fan for 35 years. As a PHX resident, the Suns were growing on me. They just sprayed roundup on that growth.

Every idiot seems to want to use his wad of cash to dispense with his view – which is fine. But using a sports team is one of the lowest I think I’ve ever seen.

So he plans on alienating 70% of his fan base? What a complete moron.

    • Richard Mullins

and I’m big Spurs fan(ok, I’m being biased). I know Peter Holt wouldn’t do something like that. I’m really sure on that. The whole Spurs organization wouldn’t do things like that and out all of the teams in the NBA, it’s the only I can support. They beat one of the biggest jerk terms in the league and I’m sure they can pull off beating the next jerk team, that being the Phoenix Suns.

      • Swamp_Yankee

But I agree that most like Holt would respect their fan base more then this.

They can say they support it. They can use the “Los” shirts once in while to celebrate diversity, but to actually exploit a playoff game for a controversial political stance is scummy.

        • Richard Mullins

He’d probably yell at them to take off that stupid jersey and use the regular Phoenix Suns jersey. I’ve never seen a Los Spurs jersey either when Red McCombs owned it or when Peter Holt has. Not one time. It goes against the style of the organization. The fact is that a lot of owners of Pro sports franchises are left of center.

Popovich and the Spurs support the decision, the NBA supports (they had to approve it) the decision, so it’s just as much an NBA message as it is a Suns message.

Until the law goes away, AZ will continue to be subject to the tyranny of the left, the media, and this administration. Obama will in no way do anything a) because he has nothing to gain yet and b) he will watch as AZ writhes on the vine, getting crucified by the slander that continues to grow.

This is going to be one long, hot summer in Phx.

    • Richard Mullins

I know the league is already full of idiots but not all that sure on the Spurs organization.

  • cabanon

Its his team and he can do what he wants with it.

    • Swamp_Yankee

can do what they want to. Pop icons can say what they want, but the people can stop going to their movies or buying their CDs. He disrespected the people that provide him his revenue stream.

      • cabanon

Its his team and business and he can run it the way he wants. To suggest he needs to abide by some apolitical business model is ridiculous. Professional sports is a business so its not disrespectful to the game, it’s simply business.

        • Swamp_Yankee

… why is he injecting politics into it?

The fact is that pro ownerships are stewards. Its not a lemonade stand. They must represent the game. There are lots of things they can and cannot do. Owenrship agreements are complex. For example. the league usually determines the dress code for the teams, not the owners. Sale of the team must be approved by the league. Teams must confrom to many rules and regulation dictated by the league, unions and the cities they represent.

Pro athletes are role models whether they like it or not. They should not be allowed to act like thugs and then hide behind a free market argument,.. hey its my money and my life, leave me alone. Nor should the owners get to do whatever they please with impunity.

Its not an argument grounded in economics anyway. Its one grounded in respect. Just because one is a business owner doesnt mean they should not be condemned for reckless or irresponsible actions that impact the community at large.

          • cabanon

The team is a business, it has no loyalty to the residents of Arizona, if it makes business sense to pick the team up and move it to Alaska, then they have every right to do so as long as the NBA would OK it.

So maybe they understand their target demographics and know this will get them more fans, maybe they know this will get them some added media exposure. The fact is there are lots of business reasons for them to do this. They actually already have the jerseys from a previous marketing gimmick. The owner wanted to do it, the coach was fine with it, the players are supportive and the NBA authorized it.

          • Richard Mullins

or you wouldn’t have a good fan base. That sort of what happened in Seattle before their NBA franchise moved to Oklahoma City. The league likes gimmicks and jerk owners like Mark Cuban. That wasn’t unexpected. You don’t move a team if it has a loyal fan base.

back when Barkley and KJ were still on the team…

And I though Jerry Colangelo (sp?) owned the team…but that was years ago and he might be dead so…

All of this leads to one, single point: Hearing the Suns protest about a legal issue is like listening to Kid Rock sell Pampers…Who cares?

…jerseys for years. Marketing play for the (in the Spurs’ case) 55% market demographic. Huge following in area Spanish-language radio, and especially with a Spanish-speaking superstar like Ginobili on the team.

Read the article, didn’t think Popovich was such a squish, though.

  • CincoSolas_del_Bronx

one can only surmise that they didn’t go all the way, because too many people would read “Los Soles” as “Lost Souls”.

  • Doc Holliday

The San Antonio Spurs have long been considered the “goodie two shoes” team anyway. From the days of church going David Robinson, and the “team first” attitude he and others instilled, the Spurs have not only been winners, but they have been the proof that sometimes good guys do finish first.

The Spurs as a team have had truly great players, truly good people, and they have added lost of retreads that finally found a place to fit in and prosper. You don’t see all the “me first” stuff with the Spurs, and the thugs never where their jerseys, they consider the Spurs boring.

    • Aaron Gardner

FYI, Popovich was all for the idea of using “Los Spurs” on their uniforms but couldn’t get them made in time.

      • Doc Holliday

at least we don’t have that America-hating, Iraq War bashing, leftist putz Steve Nash on our team.

heck even NPR calls him admiringly calls him a Commie

        • Aaron Gardner

He may be a commie, but he can ball for sure. ;)

I grew up in Phoenix and will always be a Suns fan.

Also, I could care less what a Canuck thinks of Arizona’s law.

He better make sure to carry his papers. ;)

          • Doc Holliday

I kind of liked him when he was a Maverick before I realized that entire team was full of lefty jerks ie, Nash, Nowitzki, Cuban

btw, I respect your loyalty. I am actually more of an Arizona Buycotter.
