If you think the maelstrom caused by the 2005 Trump hot mic leak is going to just blow over, think again. The Republican party is still seeing the fall out, not only in Trump’s poll numbers, but in the reactions of party members.

Alaska’s two senators have resigned from leadership posts in their state’s Republican Party after denouncing Donald Trump, according to a new report.

Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan voluntarily stepped down over the weekend as honorary members of their party’s state central committee, The Associated Press said Wednesday.

The AP said it confirmed the pair’s decision Tuesday with Murkowski campaign spokesman Robert Dillon. Party officers are expected to back party candidates.

Murkowski is currently in campaign mode, as she seeks reelection to her positon. She, unlike some who have found themselves left in very uncomfortable positions because of the duty to tow the party line, is enjoying a comfortable, two-digit lead over her competitors in latest polls.

“I cannot and will not support Donald Trump for president,” Murkowski tweeted last Saturday, one day after the tape’s emergence. “He has forfeited the right to be our party’s nominee.”

“I will continue to campaign for Republican candidates across Alaska and the country,” Sullivan said in his own statement after the footage’s emergence.

“Keeping Republicans in the Senate majority is critical to the economic and national security of Alaska and America. As for the White House, Donald Trump should step aside. I will support [Republican vice presidential nominee] Gov. Mike Pence for president.”

Except Pence isn’t running for president.

Over the weekend, there were heated rumors of replacing Trump at the top of the ticket with Pence, but for such a thing to happen, Trump would have to step down voluntarily, or be taken out by some other means.

He has flatly refused to give up, even in the face of certain annihilation on election day.

With the possibility of more and worse bombshells to be revealed, expect it to become harder and harder for those who have stayed onboard to continue defending this man.
