Overwhelmed: A Prayer of Thanksgiving

“O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His compassion and lovingkindness endure forever!”
Psalm 107:1 AMP

After a year and a half of a contentious election season, culminating in what appears to be the crumbling of the conservative movement, in favor of some rabid form of populism and rancor, it is good to take a step back and just acknowledge my anchor.

The first Thanksgiving was observed in the fall season of 1621.

The Pilgrims had struggled through a harsh time of sickness and struggle the previous winter, but they never wavered in their faith. With the help of friendly Native Americans, they were taught to farm and harvest, resulting in crops that helped to sustain them.

They thanked God for His provision. They did not waste time protesting what they’d lost the previous year. They just prayed, believed, and rejoiced. Their faith grounded them and gave them hope.

God was good then.

God is still good.

Just as it was with those earliest settlers, how much more should we focus on the goodness and provision of God, rather than what we may have lost? God has not changed. He is outside of time, so He’s not affected by the change in culture or mores. He is God.

For as frustrated as I have found myself with the world around me in the past year, I am continuously in awe of my Heavenly Father. He has come through for me over and over, again.

I have been broken and stressed over things I have no control over.

I have stumbled, but He has not allowed me to fall.

So what do I have to bring to remembrance today, as I give thanks?

I have a roof over my head and clothes on my back.

Thank You, Father, for provision. Keep me sensitive to the needs of others, who have no home. For the least of these, let me be Your hands and feet.

I have my health.

Thank You, Father, for my health. Jehovah-Rapha, I pray Your healing for all those who need a touch in their bodies. Be the healing they seek, and draw them to You.

For that matter, I have parents that the Lord has seen fit to give me another year with, and a loving son, who is the light of my life.

Thank You, Father, for the blessing of family. I pray be a light and a healing balm for those families that are dealing with loss or broken bonds, today. I pray restoration and peace, in Jesus’ name.

I also have this position with RedState that I absolutely love!

I began posting diaries with RedState in December of 2015. On March 16, 2016, during a time of uncertainty and need, Leon Wolf reached out to me and offered me a position as a front page contributor.

It was an answer to many months of prayer.

It was a way made, where there seemed to be no way.

I didn’t see it coming. I didn’t expect it. I was shocked by it.

I am eternally grateful for it.

Thank You, Father God, for moving mountains. Thank You, Father, for position and opportunity. I plead Your blessings and favor over this company and the work we do, over my colleagues, the readers, their families and friends.

For this year, I thank You. For the approaching new year, may we all move forward expecting and with continued thanks giving, not just for those blessings we see, but for the hope of Your blessings to come.

And that is what we should all look to cultivate: an attitude of thanks giving, whether we see God’s grace in the immediate, or whether we’re walking through a valley.

Your goodness endures through the ages, Father. Kingdoms will rise and fall. Rulers will come and go, but Your majesty is unending. Overwhelm us, Lord. You are God, alone. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
