Breaking: Indiana will become first state to defund Planned Parenthood

Mitch Daniels has been ahead of the curve since he kicked off his term by signing an exective order banning collective bargaining… six years ago.

He has since drawn the ire of many pro-life advocates with “truce” talk… a political misstep that has overshadowed his perfect pro-life record. Today, Mitch is again leading the pack by making Indiana the first state to defund Planned Parenthood.

Via USA Today:

“I supported this bill from the outset, and the recent addition of language guarding against the spending of tax dollars to support abortions creates no reason to alter my position,” said Daniels, a Republican.

He is supposed to sign the bill into law next week.

Just to recap, the bill would cut $3 million in federal money to Planned Parenthood, in addition to banning abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy unless the life of the woman is threatened. A fiscal victory, to be sure, but more importantly this sets a precedent nationally. Here’s hoping other states will quickly follow suit.

IN did the right thing. I hope this doesn’t end up getting tied up in the courts.

The good news is that the Alliance Defense Fund (HQ in Phoenix) has committed to defend the law for nothing. I’m encouraged by this because they’ve got a fantastic track record on these types of actions.

Daniels POTUS numbers and how he fares with SoCons v Huckabee and Palin.

will be unconvinced, but that three-stool conservatives will see it as a mark in his favor.

First, while they are a noisy lot, they are vastly outnumbered by rational SoCons. They are motivated and they can make a difference in a caucus or in a small turn out primary, but I don’t thing they’ve got the numbers to make a real impact if the rational SoCons can be convinced.

Second, Daniels should be able to make a great pitch to SoCons once he’s signed this bill. From what I’ve seen the RTL folks in Indiana love him and he’s about 100% with them. His pro-life credentials are as good as anybody’s and he’s an actual conservative with a small government conservative record as a two term executive.

Most Huck supporters do seem to be SIVVs, populists, “compassionate conservatives”, and Dems enchanted with his “nuance” on government and spending issues. I’d be surprised if Daniels has any appeal for those folks in the first place, and so I don’t think that he gets anyone except for people who supported Huck solely from name recognition.

Palin supporters are different. The rational ones, I think, will look favorably on this. The Palinistas, OTOH, will either vote Palin or whoever she supports, or stay home, so they’re not a factor.
