Tech at Night: The Internet Sales Tax roll call. Obamaphone survives. Do people care about Privacy?

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  March 26th at 03:30 AM  |

    Tech at Night

Jeff Flake. Jeff Sessions. Ron Johnson. Tim Scott.

Ted Cruz. Marco Rubio. Mike Lee. Rand Paul.

I’m generally pleased with all eight of these guys being in the Senate. They were on opposite sides of the sales tax compact amendment vote, though. If you look at the way Governors split on the issues, you’ll see similar responses. Effective conservative Governors have fallen on both sides, including neighbors Haley Barbour and Bobby Jindal.

I’m fine with the compact. It’s Constitutional and merely lets states preserve existing revenue streams, without having to defy basic economic reality by unilaterally cooperating in the rewrite-the-sales-tax Prisoner’s Dilemma. That is, any one first state that shifts from buyer-owes to seller-owes in sales tax, creating the marketplace of sales taxes that compact opponents favor, automatically creates a disincentive for businesses to set up shop there.

So, we pass the compact as the best practical solution.

Recently at RedState: Ajit Pai on Robert McDowell is worth a read. Then there’s Seton Motley on Marco Rubio challenging Internet regulation.

Will Red State Democrats Abjure Their Principles With the Filibuster?

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  January 18th at 07:58 AM  |

It’s time for the red state Democrats in the Senate to answer the question Elijah posed to the idol-worshipers: “How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD [be] God, follow him; but if Baal, [then] follow him.” Senators like Mark Pryor (AR), Mary Landrieu (LA), Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Max Baucus (MT), Joe Manchin (WV), and Tim Johnson (SD) need to decide whether they | Read More »

Do you want to repeal Obamacare?

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  October 31st at 10:00 AM  |

Claire McCaskill. Bob Casey Jr. Sherrod Brown. Bill Nelson. Tammy Baldwin. Tim Kaine. These Senators and Senate candidates all support or even voted for Obamacare. Importantly, they all have Republican opponents who have a chance to win, thanks in part to the growing support for Mitt Romney in their swing states.

If we want to defeat Obamacare, it is critical that we elect Republicans to as many Senate seats as we can. The sad fact is that we can’t just get 50 and hope to win on a reconciliation tiebreak vote cast by Paul Ryan. You never know if the Democrats might find an anti-TEA party Republican who oppose the will of the voters and come to the other side. So we need to elect as many Republicans as we can.

That means no Republican left behind. George Allen, Tommy Thompson, Connie Mack, Josh Mandel, Tom Smith, and yes, Todd Akin are six key anti-Obamacare votes we need to elect, along with of course Mitt Romney.

We can only do this if we knock on doors, contact voters, and get out the vote for this important election. Please help.

Todd Akin Can Win. The NRSC Will Cut Off Its Nose to Spite Its Face in Missouri.

Todd Akin Can Win. The NRSC Will Cut Off Its Nose to Spite Its Face in Missouri.

In 2010, the National Republican Senatorial Committee spent a great deal of time and energy portraying conservatives as the reason the GOP did not take back the Senate. They blamed Jim DeMint for Sharon Angle’s win, though he chose not to supporter her in the primary. They blamed Jim DeMint and Sarah Palin for Christine O’Donnell’s win, though they endorsed a week before the primary | Read More »

The Broader Issue is Abortion on Demand, Not Political Gaffes

By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary)  |  August 20th at 03:45 PM  |

Over the weekend, Missouri Republican senatorial candidate Todd Akin made bizarre comments about pregnancies resulting from rape during an interview with a local TV station.  In response to a question regarding his opposition to abortion even in cases of rape, and as part of an effort to illustrate the rarity of such abortions in the scheme of the broader epidemic, Akin offered an inane, inaccurate, | Read More »

How much longer can Claire McCaskill last in Missouri?

By: Moe Lane (Diary)  |  July 28th at 10:00 AM  |

If you’re a Democrat, then the latest poll from Mason-Dixon should not be combined with alcohol and/or used in conjunction with heavy machinery: she’s not just losing.  John Brunner beats her 52/41; Sarah Steelman, 49/42; and Todd Akin 49/44.  And that’s registered voters.  These are the kinds of numbers that you’d expect to see from a challenger; an incumbent that far underwater needs an exit | Read More »

Steelman over 50% vs McCaskill in Missouri

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  March 19th at 04:00 PM  |

I’m glad that we’re now starting to have a better idea of the shape of the Senate race, as we settle down on who the candidates are going to be, and how they’re polling against incumbents (or each other, in the case of open seats). Soon I will update my Senate projections with actual data. In the meantime, we’ve got the first Missouri Senate poll | Read More »

    Senate Porkers Defeat Earmark Ban

By: Brian Darling (Diary)  |  February 2nd at 05:30 PM  |

Senators Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) learned a valuable lession today about member’s desire to go back to the practice of earmarking pet projects.  Toomey and McCaskill offered an Amendment to the STOCK Act that would have created a new Senate point of order against earmarks in bills.  They were met with bipartisan opposition to this common sense idea.

Claire McCaskill (desperately) weighs in on Siga scandal.

By: Moe Lane (Diary)  |  November 26th at 10:00 AM  |

Background: several weeks ago the LA Times reported that the Obama administration had steered nearly half a billion dollars’ worth of a no-bid contract on a secondary smallpox vaccine – one not actually tested on human beings – to Siga Technology, a company controlled by longtime Democratic party contributor Ronald Perelman. Needless to say, the drug’s much more expensive than the primary drug, the government | Read More »

Tech at Night: Claire McCaskill on a Net Neutrality leash, 4G LTE is amazing stuff, Internet censorship doesn’t work

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  May 21st at 03:00 AM  |

Ah, Claire McCaskill. Her not particularly active Twitter account said this week that she wants to be careful about regulation of privacy online, lest those regulations cause us all to have “less access to amazing stuff.” True statement I think. Too bad she refused to stick to her guns on the radical left’s key policy, Net Neutrality. On that issue, McCaskill told MyDD government regulation | Read More »

Missouri’s McCaskill, attorney general split on individual mandate

By: Beltway Whispers (Diary)  |  April 12th at 04:30 PM  |

There’s party strife in them thar hills. Missouri’s Democratic Attorney General, Chris Koster, entered Monday a brief in the Florida case looking to upend President Barack Obama’s health care reforms. And he hopes Florida succeeds, kind of. The bill’s mandate that individuals purchase health coverage “would imbue Congress with police powers rejected by the Founding Fathers,” Koster’s brief reads, while noting later he still favors | Read More »

Sen. McCaskill: “We have paid every dime of our taxes.”

By: Moe Lane (Diary)  |  March 22nd at 01:30 PM  |

That is, McCaskill said that she did, back in 2006 (via Hot Air Headlines): For those who don’t remember the initial controversy mentioned in the ad, McCaskill’s husband was linked to some extraordinarily poorly-operated Missouri nursing homes at the same time that McCaskill herself had oversight over Missouri nursing homes as Missouri State Auditor. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill reminds me of the Seinfeld episode “The Opposite“, where George decides that in order to succeed, he must do the opposite of every instinct he ever had.  For years now, just like George Castanza, Claire McCaskill has said one thing and done the opposite.  Missouri GOP executive director Lloyd Smith notes: “Time after time, Missourians have watched as Claire McCaskill says | Read More »

    Today in Washington – November 30, 2010

By: Brian Darling (Diary)  |  November 30th at 11:30 AM  |

They just don’t get it here in Washington, DC.  The Senate voted today for business as usual — against an amendment by Senators Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) to ban earmarking by Senators.  The vote was conducted under a suspension of the Senate’s rules, yet it garnered only 39 votes in favor of an earmark ban for the whole Senate.  They love pork on Capitol Hill.  | Read More »

Earmark reform hits phase two this week.  Now that House and Senate Republicans have promised not to earmark, the fight goes to the House and Senate Floor.  Expect votes in both the House and Senate over the next few months to ban the corrupting and wasteful practice of earmarking for the whole Congress.
