Civil Libertarian Alert
Attorneys-General who have a past of seeking to undermine the Sixth Amendment right to counsel are no friends of civil liberties. I had thought that the Marc Rich pardon was the biggest strike against Eric Holder. Turns out that something potentially even bigger is out there. I want lots and lots and lots of Judiciary Committee hearing questions on these issues. The phrase “What were | Read More »
Arlen Specter Quietly Opens Fire on Eric Holder
Senator Arlen Specter has quietly launched the opening salvo against Eric Holder’s nomination for Attorney General. Though Specter has tried to be discreet, Senate sources have handed me a copy of Specter’s latest letter to Holder that went out yesterday. The letter shows that “committee staff reviewed [Holder's] questionnaire responses and noted a number of apparent omissions.” Specter is “respectfully ask[ing]” Holder to either supplement | Read More »
Lugar, Voinovich Go Soft on Eric Holder
President-elect Barack Obama doesn’t take office until Jan. 20, but his liberal allies on Capitol Hill want to move quickly on the nomination of Attorney General designee Eric Holder. There’s good reason. The more time conservatives have to dig into Holder’s past, the more dirt they’re likely to find. Legal Times reports today that “Republicans have fastened to Holder as their best chance to politically | Read More »
Specter Tells Leahy to Slow Down Holder Confirmation
From the diaries by Erick J. Taylor Rushing is reporting today that Republican Sen. Arlen Specter (Pennsylvania) is going to seek to slow down the pace that is being set for the Eric Holder (President-elect Obama’s pick for Attorney General) confirmation hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which he is the Ranking Minority Member. He has called Democrat Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy’s (Vermont) pace “not realistic”. Specter | Read More »
The Eric Holder Appointment
Yeah, I still think it’s a mistake.
Way To Go, Andrew
Andrew Sullivan is livid. He is livid because there is a possibility–perhaps even a strong one–that John Brennan could become the new Director of Central Intelligence. Sullivan objects to this because he thinks that Brennan bought into “politicized” intelligence in the run-up to the war in Iraq and that Brennan may have been involved in war crimes. And of course, in situations like this one, | Read More »
The confirmation hearing for Holder should be fun.
I’m noting this article by the WSJ: Ordinarily, defendants seeking a pardon file a petition with the Justice Department, which then makes a recommendation to the White House. Mr. Rich’s legal team went directly to the White House, and the president spoke with one of the Rich lawyers, Jack Quinn, who had worked as White House counsel. The Justice Department maintained that it hadn’t been | Read More »
When The Time Comes For Eric Holder’s Confirmation Hearings . . .
I certainly hope that George Lardner is asked to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee to give his opinion on whether Holder is qualified for the job, given his involvement in the Marc Rich pardon. In his testimony, Lardner can point out the following: Contrary to past statements, Holder was a lot more involved in the decision to pardon than he claimed to be, stating | Read More »
Barack Obama’s Gun Grabbing Attorney General
Podcast Show Notes The Obama transition: The Fannie Mae connection. Obama’s new NSA advisor is a good one. Tom Daschle: HHS Secretary and lobbyist. Eric Holder: Behind the Mark Rich pardon and anti-gun. On the positive side: he has a mustache. Progressives not happy at Obama’s appointments. (Hat Tip: Reformed Chicks Babbling.) Doomed to repeat it: House GOP rejects earmark moratorium. (Hat Tip: Hot Air.) McCotter’s | Read More »
Obama’s New AG on the Second Amendment
According to the NRA-ILA, Obama’s odds-on favorite for AG is an anti-2nd Amendment As Individual Right cosignatory with Janet Reno during the D.C. vs. Heller case. In other words, a gun grabber. Media reports say President-elect Barack Obama has selected Eric Holder as his Attorney General, and that Holder may already have accepted the offer. Holder, as Deputy Attorney General under Janet Reno during the | Read More »
Eric Holder: hey, let’s restrict Internet speech!
(Via Instapundit) He only wants “reasonable restrictions,” of course. Of course. Moe Lane PS: Is it just me, or is the word “vetting” apparently an obscene word to the President-elect?
Holder For Attorney General?
Dave Kopel dissents. I feel good that the dissent is out in cyberspace but I would feel even better if the dissent could be verbalized in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee with lots and lots of television cameras watching.
Eric Holder (Obama AG) puts Elian Gonzalez back in the MSM (as well as other “judgement” issues)
Discussion of Holder bio (Fox news: Eric Holder being Vetted for Obama AG) involves the Bill Clinton Pardons (including Marc Rich), but for some reason I’ve seen more coverage regarding the Elian Gonzalez situation (all elements can be part of this thread discussion). To start off this discussion I wanted to recap the Gonzalez “situation,” but instead I decided I would just bring forth [with | Read More »

Holder versus Fitzgerald?
First, let’s set the scenario. To recap: Eric Holder vetted the Marc Rich pardon for the Clinton White House; Scooter Libby was one of Rich’s lawyers; and Patrick Fitzgerald was one of the attorneys going after Rich. With me so far? Now read this 2002 article, from the New York Times: Panel Says Top Justice Dept. Aide Held Information on Rich’s Pardon By ALISON LEIGH | Read More »
