Tech at Night: CISPA moves on. Ayotte takes on the Sales Tax. Google defeats Viacom.

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  April 20th at 04:30 AM  |

    Tech at Night

So yes, CISPA passed the House. Unsurprisingly, Anonymous isn’t happy, what when as things stand Lulzsec already is getting hammered. Greater information sharing is a threat to online anarchists, as well as foreign private and state actors.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where Jay Rockefeller may stall on an ego-driven separate bill. I think the bill’s a good idea. It’s not perfect, but not all of the criticisms floating around are correct. In particular, SOPA is a red herring, and totally unrelated. CISPA is about information sharing, not regulation.

Tech at Night: What goes around, comes around for Sprint. Hey Chuck Grassley: Everybody knows you never go full Biden.

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  January 31st at 03:58 AM  |

    Tech at Night

Justice is impeding the Sprint/Softbank merger. Gee, whoever could have predicted that if Sprint funded the left-wing effort to embolden Obama antitrust action, then Sprint itself could suffer bad consequences? I wonder. It wasn’t me, was it? I didn’t point out that Sprint Nextel itself had a history of mergers, such as the Sprint-Nextel merger, did I? Hmm.

Hey Chuck Grassley: The first amendment is not a suggestion any more than the second amendment is. There is no Video Game exception that I saw. You’d have to be as special as the Vice President to think think citing the words of a crazed murderer as an authority helps you make a point, anyway.

Besides, it is not your job to dictate ‘artistic value’ to others, nor does your own job have ‘artistic value.’ So if you would silence others who do not have ‘artistic value,’ then that do we conclude about your right to speech? Everybody knows you never go full Biden, Senator.

Law of the Sea Treaty Dead

By: Brian Darling (Diary)  |  July 16th at 03:00 PM  |

Three conservative cheers for Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Kelly Ayotte (R–N.H.) for announcing critical opposition to the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST). The LOST is a treaty being pushed by the Obama administration that would bind the U.S. to decisions of a United Nations-sanctioned governing body of the world’s oceans. Conservatives worry that U.S. Senate ratification of the Treaty would lead to an | Read More »

Tech at Night: SOPA day wrap-up, and the next fight: taxes

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  January 19th at 12:00 AM  |

So, Erick Erickson decided to make a big push against SOPA today, again bringing out the primary threat card. I also had a post on SOPA and PROTECT IP today. We were heard. On the House side, Speaker John Boehner echoed Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and said the committee needs to find consensus before the bill can get a vote. And again, conservatives like Darrell | Read More »

Ovide Lamontagne enters NH-GOV (R) primary.

By: Moe Lane (Diary)  |  September 19th at 05:30 PM  |

Not particularly surprising – it’s been speculated on for some time – but today Ovide Lamontagne made it official: he’ll be running to replace retreating Governor John Lynch (D). This morning, at the annual Bedford GOP breakfast at the Manchester Country Club, Lamontagne, with his wife, Bettie, at his side, announced his intent to once again run for governor in front of hundreds of local | Read More »

Dear Kelly Ayotte, Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, Rob Portman, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio

Welcome to the Senate. It ain’t easy, is it? Here’s the thing you need to know. Right now, you are probably telling yourself you need to be reasonable. You are probably telling yourself you need to cut a deal. I’m willing to bet you are telling yourself you should do something short term and in six more months or whenever, after everything has calmed back | Read More »

    The McConnell Defenders

By: Erick Erickson (Diary)  |  May 12th at 12:45 PM  |

It never ceases to amaze me that so many self-described conservatives will defend Mitch McConnell and the GOP Senate Leaders to the hilt when it comes to their treatment of Senate conservatives. Last night, I noted that Mitch McConnell had snubbed Jim DeMint by putting Richard Burr in the Finance Committee. “But wait,” whined the alleged conservative defenders of McConnell. “Richard Burr had seniority.” Well | Read More »

Hello! There’s no one clear theme of things to discuss tonight. It’s a diverse list of topics, so let’s just muddle on through and see what’s going on. We’ve got some good news from what the Republicans in Washington are going. On the Senate side, the side we haven’t heard nearly as much about thanks to the Obama-Reid majority there, conservative Republicans are taking key | Read More »

The first post-primary poll in New Hampshire

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  September 16th at 05:30 PM  |

If I’m going to break my rule and talk about Delaware right away, then I might as well do the same and cover the new Rasmussen poll on New Hampshire, which is the first post-primary poll of that Senate race between Republican nominee Kelly Ayotte and Democrat Paul Hodes. For a while there it wasn’t sure we’d get this matchup after all, but here we | Read More »

Ovide Lamontagne (NH) shows folks how it’s done.

By: Moe Lane (Diary)  |  September 15th at 06:30 PM  |

He has conceded the primary, will not seek a recount, and has endorsed Kelly Ayotte (video here).  Ayotte has accepted the concession with equal grace and politeness, calling Lamontagne a gentleman and a principled conservative (H/T: Hot Air). From now on, it’s all about defeating Paul Hodes in the general election. Would that more politicians acted this properly when they lose a primary.  Michael Castle | Read More »

Well, NH-SEN turned out to be pretty exciting.

By: Moe Lane (Diary)  |  September 15th at 08:00 AM  |

With 85% of the vote in Kelly Ayotte is about 900 votes ahead of Ovide Lamontagne, after an evening where she was behind in the vote.  Which is easily close enough for a recount, no matter who wins – and, honestly, this is one time where it really is still up in the air.  My personal inclination would be to counsel whoever ends up in | Read More »

Kaboom, part two: Lamontagne closing on Ayotte

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  September 13th at 12:00 PM  |

If this isn’t the most exciting and competitive year for Republican primaries of all time, it has to be close. Ovide Lamontagne had faded far behind Kelly Ayotte in the New Hampshire Senate primary, but he’s been making a comeback. And now Public Policy Polling has him truly competitive. And to think he looked like spoiler bait once upon a time!

Ovide Lamontagne Rising in New Hampshire

By: Erick Erickson (Diary)  |  September 6th at 05:00 AM  |

A lot of really good people have come out for Kelly Ayotte in the New Hamphire GOP Senate Primary. I have quietly pulled for Ovide Lamontagne, but supported those who cast their lots with Ayotte. For a good while it looked like Ovide was getting no traction and were he not in the race, Kelly Ayotte would be my pick. The other guy in the | Read More »

Binnie fades but Ayotte still the clear leader

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  September 3rd at 06:00 PM  |

New Hampshire apparently tries to hard in Presidential years to have its primaries first, that it tires and has to have its Senate primaries last. So we’re still on primary watch for that state, and it looks like the Republican race has shifted again. Kelly Ayotte still leads the primary race to decide Democrat Paul Hodes’s opponent, but it appears the race for second is | Read More »

The primary heats up in New Hampshire

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  July 29th at 01:30 PM  |

From Unlikely Voter: The big, scary to Republicans headline over at Hotline is Ayotte’s Unfavorable Ratings Rising in UNH Poll. I’m sure it’s true, but that’s what happens in contested primaries such as the one right now for Republicans in the New Hampshire Senate race. Right now, Bill Binnie’s fans don’t like Kelly Ayotte much, her fans don’t like him much.
