On the RSC Chairman’s Race
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | November 14th at 04:30 AM |
The most important vote that will happen very soon is the vote for Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, the conservative group within the House Republican Conference that often finds itself trying to pull the Republicans to the right. These past two years, it was the RSC leadership that pressed the GOP to avoid selling out to Barack Obama repeatedly, insisted the GOP keep its | Read More »
The Most Important Election: Tom Graves for RSC Chairman
By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary) | November 8th at 07:20 AM |
Folks, we’ve got a problem. There is no conservative leadership inside of Washington to serve as a firewall against Obama’s impending socialist onslaught. We’ve spent the past two years refusing to fight Obamacare, the fiscal cliff, or the debt. These issues were totally absent from the campaign. Whether we like it or not, the House of Representatives must serve as our lifeline, an oasis of | Read More »
Devolution of Transportation Authority is Solution to Earmark Problem
By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary) | May 3rd at 03:15 PM |
It’s becoming clear that many rank-and-file members of the House Republican Conference are chomping at the bit to resurrect earmarks after a two-year moratorium. Some are complaining that earmarks cede authority to the executive branch; others are lamenting the lack of “grease” to facilitate passage of statist legislation; still others are trying to push miscellaneous tariff bills, which violate the rules of the earmark ban. | Read More »
A New Highway Bill to Cave City
By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary) | April 16th at 06:28 AM |
As we’ve noted throughout the past year’s imbroglio over transportation spending, it is clear that complete federal control over transportation spending in a post-interstate highway era (post 1992) is inefficient, costly, anti-federalist, and precludes state and private innovations. Yet, Congress continues to buckle down on a policy that has failed in recent years, exposing taxpayers to future bailouts and tax increases. Worst of all, it | Read More »

The Government is Playing Hide and Seek With Airfare Taxes
By: Daniel Horowitz (Diary) | February 1st at 02:59 PM |
When purchasing a product or service, we all like to see the itemized list of charges – one that separates the cost of the purchase from the share going to Uncle Sam through the form of taxes and fees. Needless to say, government bureaucrats don’t like that. They desire that we remain blissfully ignorant of government’s burden on our everyday lives. This is one reason | Read More »
Freshman House Republicans Need Some Good Discernment
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | November 17th at 06:22 PM |
This morning’s Politico has an article on the number of leadership posts that the incoming class of 2010 is demanding be set aside for freshmen. Two slots on the Elected Leadership Committee (ELC), which basically means they will sit at the leadership table and participate in the discussion, one class president (largely irrelevant), and importantly, two coveted slots on the Steering Committee which makes committee | Read More »

Tom Graves Wins
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | June 8th at 08:43 PM |
RedState backed Tom Graves is the new Congressman for the 9th Congressional District of Georgia. He defeated Lee Hawkins in a special election. There will be a whole new primary in July and general election in November now. This was just the special election to fill the remainder of Nathan Deal’s term. Let’s hope the other candidates see the writing on the wall and step | Read More »
Lee Hawkins Hasn’t Voted for a Democrat President, But He Supported Max Cleland
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | June 7th at 01:30 PM |
Given that Hawkins has repeatedly sided with liberal Democrats and tax and spenders in the Georgia legislature, it comes as no surprise he also gave money to Max Cleland. That he’d brag about it, though, is troubling. Let’s get Tom Graves to Washington.
The Curious Tale of the Amended Complaint and the Three Day Countdown
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | June 4th at 02:21 PM |
We haven’t done enough to promote Tom Graves at RedState. We’ve been — okay I’ve been — so busy it’s fallen by the wayside. But Tom is in a real dogfight in Georgia’s 9th Congressional District. The runoff is rapidly approaching for the special election that could make Tom Graves the next Congressman from North Georgia. He is in the runoff against an obnoxious RINO | Read More »
Tom Graves Comes Out on Top
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | May 11th at 10:46 PM |
The special election happened in Georgia today for Nathan Deal’s seat in the 9th. With 97 percent reporting, former state Rep. Tom Graves (R) had 34 percent and former state Sen. Lee Hawkins (R) had 23 percent. The Associated Press called the race as headed to a runoff with 80 percent reporting. Typically in Georgia if a candidate goes into a runoff with a 10 | Read More »
