So, let me start off by saying I am as conservative as they come. While I may be a tad bit socially liberal, I consider the conservative tendencies in to hold the majority. I am also someone who wants to hold elected office in the future. I believe I have ideas that could not only help my state of Virginia, but the eventually the nation as a whole. That being said, let me lay the groudwork for what I need advice on. I am an 18-year old college student, active within the college Republicans, who is increasingly diasppointed with his elected officials. It is that disappointment that has caused me, ever since the election, to seriously consider running for elected office in 2011, the earliest possible because of age restrictions. There are two options out there, both with their own challenges. What I want to know is which one would be a better move:
Option #1 - A run for the State Senate against a incumbent Republican who will be running for his 4th full-term. The district I live in is probably 60% Republican, 20% Democratic and 20% Independent. In 2007, he picked up 62% of the vote with a Democratic challenger that dropped out and 2 independents. In my preliminary discussions with people in the district, it seems like he’s someone people are content with, but would replace if a credible challenger came along. I would more than likely run against him as an Independent or possibly as a Libertarian or Indy Green.
Option #2 - A run for the county Board of Supervisors against in Independent who would be running for re-election to her second term. She ran on a platform of responsible growth, but at the same time has been wishy-washy on the issue and accepted lot of money from developers. I would more than likey run against her as a Republican. In 2007, she only recieved about 1,800 more votes than the Republican who hadn’t even lived in the district for a year.
I’m serious about running for something in 2011, so don’t try to say to wait. This will be a way to get my feet wet and spread my name around the county for the future. I believe that I could actually give both of them a good run. My mother is well-known in the business community, my father is a well-known and respected former police officer and both are friends with high-ranking officials and former officials in the county.
So, what do you guys think. Which would be the better choice?

Start small and WOW everyone around.
Brian Hibbert Monday, January 12th at 1:59PM EST (link)Then work up to something like State Rep or Senate.
My newly elected Representative from the IL 18th Congressional district is now the youngest member of congress. Aaron Schock started his political career by running a write in campaign to get a seat on the local school board. He so impressed his fellow board members that they elected him to be president of the board. He moved from that to a State Representative seat in a hotly contested race (unseating a firm Dem) and this November won the seat of retiring Ray LaHood. He’s now 27.
The point is he started at the local level and WORKED HARD! Everyone he works with is impressed with his abilities, with the only exception being whatever poor sucker the Dems have put up against him. That is probably the best plan to follow if you want to get elected.
I won’t say wait. I’ll say GO For it! But go for something you’re likely to be able to acheive. So if your 2 options are the only ones available, go for the county position. When you win, make sure you do such a fine job that NO ONE will dispute your ability to do the Senate job. If you lose the county slot, go for a city council, school board, park district or anyting else. And above all, stick to your principals and be honest.

A Kowalski - Why wait till 2011?
Brian Hibbert Monday, January 12th at 2:03PM EST (link)Is there something you can do sooner? Get appointed to fill in an empty precinct committeeman seat. Run for something this year or next. Get your name known locally as a young hard working man who is an “up and comer”. That reputation will help you when you DO run in 2011.

Hibbert's right.
icbm Monday, January 12th at 2:09PM EST (link)Go for something you can achieve, and that will also give you governing experience.
If you fail in your first run, don’t get discouraged. Learn from your mistakes, do what you need to do in order to prepare better (get certain experience, for instance) and try again. Almost every politician has lost at least a couple times if not more.
I wouldn't run at 18 years old.
kowalski Monday, January 12th at 2:20PM EST (link)You’re just out of high school, and you’ll have a very tough fight in either of the races you’re talking about because of the age. Wait six years, develop yourself a little more, and then do it.
No matter how politically motivated I’ve been, an 18 Y.O. is too young to run for office for either party and expect any kind of respect. People will have a hard time electing you against anyone even a few years older than you are, and for good reason.
I would wait until you’re finished with college and then run for public office. Get the degree first, at the very least.

People are going to disagree with me
kowalski Monday, January 12th at 2:27PM EST (link)And say that your motivation is all that matters, but that’s not true. What I think will happen because you’re so young is that people will consider you to be a much riskier candidate for office than they’re willing to accept. I’m all for Republicans taking the initiative, but in order to run for public office you’re going to have to curtail your studies if you do the job well. That’s setting yourself up for a fall in the future.
Finish the 4-year degree first and then run.

I know you're gung-ho
kowalski Monday, January 12th at 2:33PM EST (link)But you have to understand that graduating at or near the top of your class in the college you’re in will be very important when you decide to run for public office. My best advice is not to use politics as a short-circuit on your education. The offices will still be there once you have the degree. And more importantly, you will have a **very** hard time moving beyond local offices without a college degree.

NO. Not at all.
kowalski Monday, January 12th at 2:41PM EST (link)Having a degree from a local or a state college is perfectly fine. But there is a tremendous downside for someone trying to get into politics without finishing their studies in the area they’ve chosen, particularly if they want to get out of the junior-varsity ranks. First of all, I can think of the campaign ads against this kid:
“He quit college to run for office. Do you trust him to run your….?”
Not good. Finish what you start, and get the piece of paper with absolutely no doubts or qualifications.

Sorry, I was being serious
kowalski Monday, January 12th at 2:52PM EST (link)And I hope he takes the advice. I didn’t even recognize the sarcasm because I’m concerned. My best advice is for him to finish what he started in college, and do so as well as he can, bide his time, develop himself, and then run.
There is a very real danger of peaking too early when someone is as motivated and articulate as this guy is. My advice is to season himself a little longer and then run. Twenty years after that we could be looking at the next President.

I'll disagree a LITTLE with you.
Brian Hibbert Monday, January 12th at 3:04PM EST (link)It’s critical that he finish his education whether he eventually goes into politics or not.
But there are local positions that he can fill now while attending college. Anyone with that much fire should be encouranged and developed into someone who can run for a bigger job. State Senate is unrealistic for an 18 year old. But school board or city council or library board or county commission…. anything of that nature will be a good experience. We as a party, need to develope a bench. The local offices are the farm team and the younger we get them started the better.
This approach REQUIRES that he do everything better than people with a little more grey, but can be a big plus as he moves up the line.
If he wants to party and socialize like an average 18 YO, then he has no hope. I gave an example that he could follow. Aaron Schock worked HARD to get elected and took every job he did seriously (including his college degree).

I'll agree with that
kowalski Monday, January 12th at 3:15PM EST (link)I’ll agree with that with the proviso that I don’t think it’s possible for a very young man to focus on both. It would take a really extraordinary person to do both, and I don’t doubt there are people in this world who can manage both, but they’re rare. I don’t know our young poster here, so it could be that he has what it takes, but even if he does, he needs to remember that he must always finish what he began before or while he starts something something else, particularly where his responsibility will be to the public. It’s crucial.
It could very well be that we’re talking about someone who is one in 100,000 or 1,000,000 here, but very very few people I’ve ever met can manage that kind of dual responsibility well at 18.
At this point the best thing I can say is that I hope he knows himself very well.

Yep, it's not an easy path.
Brian Hibbert Monday, January 12th at 3:26PM EST (link)And if he’s not an over acheiver, he’ll crash and burn.
But he asked for an opinion about which office to run for, not if he should run. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he really is the 1 in 100,000 that can handle this type of plan.

I am not going to tell you to run… or not to run…
I’m going to tell you HOW to run
2009 – join every GOP organization you can find in your area. Work the fund raisers, the picnics whatever… anything that puts you in contact with people. Build your rolodex. Through this… find a campaign to join… something small… local… I like state house races ‘high’ enough to see the local and state issues involved small enough to be able to see what’s going on. If you can… without being pushy… become the defacto ‘body man’ Hold their coat, drive the car, go where they go see what they see, meet who they meet.
If they are very good you’ll learn how to run in your area. If they are not… you’ll know what not to do.
By the end of the year… have written out a plan… the first draft of the plan to run in 2011.
2010 – start running… but don’t start running. Tell no one what you are doing. Those that need to know will know by watching you and what you are doing. Those that don’t are of less importance. First thing: Take the Dale Carnegie speaking course. And then… take it again… the second time should be free anyway. Get so that you are meet twenty people and remember them Get so that you can stand up and speak to a room full of people about almost anything without panic.
Start going to those places that your candidate did… local meetings, JayCees, Rotary, VFW, school board meetings… meet people, discuss issues, you are doing three very important things: one… name recognition, you are going to be asking these people for money and support in a year… at least they’ll know who is asking. Two… you are continuing to build your Rolodex of potential supporters. Three… learning the issues for your race.
Also in 2010 you will be refining your plan… study all the campaign finance reports and develop a campaign budget. By 14 months out from ‘your’ election you should have the plan in place and know what votes you’ll need and where they will likely come from and what money you’ll likely need
have selected and gotten their agreement of a small group of ‘helpers’ 3-5 people… that will be the backbone of your campaign. Assign one of these to be ‘opposition research’ to find out everything they can about who you are running against. Legal ways only… don’t be like that!
2011 – or 12 months out. Retrace your steps from the last two years only thing time you will be asking to speak to these groups… start talking to these groups… don’t talk about running discuss issues… whatever they are. And getting names… names of people that liked what you said… those that come up to talk to you after you speak. Know what you call a person that comes up to you after a meeting that you spoke at?
D.o.n.o.r.
FILING DAY!
Now… you start to run! Get that supporter list going, have people hold ‘coffees’ for you start speaking to groups in earnest, get out and meet people… hand out info get yourself in the press (local papers?) run like hell. Work your plan… go for the votes you’ll need target those areas you need to draw from and go door-to-door, speak, shake hands, get signs out (all those people you’ve been meeting).
There’s more but I’m tired…
