The Big Boob Conundrum (aka “Breasts of Mass Destruction”)

Careful - Big Bird...ummm....Brother is watching.....

.
New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg has officially lost it:

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

“It’s the patient’s choice,” said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. “But it’s our job to educate them on the best option.”

Lisa Paladino, of Staten Island University Hospital, said: “The key to getting more moms to breast-feed is making the formula less accessible. This way, the RN has to sign out the formula like any other medication. The nurse’s aide can’t just go grab another bottle.”

Hmmmm……so now babies are going to have to wait as long as the rest of us before their “medicine” is brought to them by an overworked nurse? Do you really want future voters to starve, Mr. Bloomberg?
.

Remember boys and girls - Nanny Bloomberg knows what is best

.
You may recall that just a couple of months ago, Mayor Bloomberg proposed a ban on all soft drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is proposing a ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks in the city’s restaurants, delis and movie theaters in the hopes of combating obesity — an expansion of his administration’s efforts to encourage healthy behavior by limiting residents’ choices.

The proposal — expected to be announced formally on Thursday in a City Hall briefing — would take 20-ounce soda bottles off the shelves of the city’s delis and eliminate super-sized sugary soft drinks from fast-food menus.

Golly gee willikers, Mayor Bloomberg – I do believe that you have just managed to regulate yourself into the proverbial corner here.

Given that the average amount of milk produced by a lactating mother (850 ml/day) is well over 16 ounces (473.2 ml), those 38DDDs are “containers” which clearly violate your Big Gulp edict (breast milk is sweet, and since it’s not alcoholic, that technically makes it a “soft” drink).
.

Good thing that container is biodegradable.....

.
Way back in 2009, Mayor Bloomberg stood in front of the United Nations General Assembly summit on non-communicable diseases, and lent his support to a declaration which recommended that they:

“Promote the implementation of the WHO (World Health Organization) set of recommendations on the marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages to children, including foods that are high in saturated fats, trans-fatty acids, free sugars, or salt” (Item 43f, page 7).

So….using the very standards that you yourself advocated 3 years ago Mr. Bloomberg, just how “healthy” is breast milk compared to baby formula?

The fat content of breast milk is roughly 4.2 g/100 ml – at 9 calories (kcal) per gram of fat, that works out to 37.8 kcal of fat per 100 ml of breast milk. Given that the average caloric content of breast milk is around 70 kcal/100 ml, breast milk is 54% fat.

Most baby formula, on the other hand, averages around 45% fat and 68.7 cal/100 ml – which means that breast milk is higher in fat and calories than formula.

My God, man! What are you trying to do – kill those poor little babies?
.

Wonder what the fat/calorie content of this meal is.....

.
Given Mayor Bloomberg’s commitment to lowering the fat and caloric content in all NYCer’s diets, you’d think he would be PROMOTING baby formula, not banning it – after all, according to the NYC Health Department’s own standards, baby formula is “healthier” (lower in fat and calories) than breast milk.

I guess he is right in one respect, though – some boobs are clearly better than others:

… but he’s not my mother.

Then again, I’m a Texan, and we don’t cotton to anyone telling us what we can and cannot do.

NONE of my 4 kids was able to nurse (I had C-sections, and my body never “knew” that the babies had been born, so my milk never came in), and they all ended up needing a specialized formula for the first year of their lives.

So, yeah – he’d better not come near me with his “I know better than you” attitude….. :P

we live in NYState and are hopeful Bloomberg’s influence doesn’t get any farther than his city.

I also had medical complications that prevented nursing until the 7th week. I went through all you have to accomplish such a feat only to fail. The nursing staff was compassionate and kind. I cannot image what a mother in my situation in a NY city hospital is going to go through if she legitimately cannot nurse. Will she still have to hear a lecture with every bottle?

I felt such a failure for not being able to nurse and this was over 30 years ago. Apparently Bloomberg and the council that approved this latest regulation think these women cannot make education decisions for themselves. My heart goes out to those who for medical reasons cannot nurse and the nonsense they will be put through.

Thanks for the fun part of your diary, and thanks for the serious part. You are obviously a “hoot”. ;-)

But after 2 months of trying everything under the sun with DD#1 and never being able to “produce” any extra, being sore as all get out, my daughter having to take an additional ounce after every feeding, and crying my eyes out wondering what was wrong with me, I decided to do what was best for my baby.

Everyone told me “You’ll know when your milk comes in” – one day about a month after my daughter’s birth I fed her a bottle and waited.

          And waited.
          And waited.

SIX HOURS later, I understood what everyone was talking about.

When I finally decided to quit, it only took 36 hours to completely dry up.

That told me all I needed to know.
I didn’t feel guilty after that.

But I almost launched myself across a table when some sanctimonious mother told me “Well, you just didn’t try hard enough….”

mothers in the world. Mine was a nurse. However I had a niece who was an RN and see told me I did above and beyond what many would do and that helped. My problem was after waiting 7 weeks my son was already a big eater and I never got there. After a week we both quit crying when I gave him the bottle back. It does make you feel like a failure tho’, no matter that we weren’t. I look back on it and feel bad for new mothers who have to use the NYC hospitals. It isn’t right to lock up formula. And you are so right when you bring up just how speedy that’s gonna be. Screaming baby, waiting….waiting. Screaming baby….lecture first…well, it ain’t a nice scenario

Just the title was worth the recommendation but the research and photographs make this a classic work on Mother Bloomburg.

I don’t know about you, but I have to find something to laugh about amidst all of the wreckage.

Thankfully, clowns like this make it really easy…..

      Glad you liked it!

The use of images and political cartoons that we do not have the rights to republish greatly reduces (eliminates?) the chances that we’ll front a diary. While I doubt that I would promote one with “boobs” in the title, my comment applies to any like this that include such images.

Not that this is a bad diary…it’s not. I’m just providing a little guidance.

If a married husband and husband have a kid, isn’t it kind of a given they won’t be nursing it?

Not in favor of government or corporate interference with motherhood.

about these poor folks in liberal land who pay the price for the choices they make in the poll booth. Considering his favorable ratings in NYC, seems the people of that city want a nanny state where they can act like robots and have their every decision made for them. Then they want to whine when the same people making their decisions for them tell them they can not have a big ole Pepsi (it was a good thing large Cokes were banned as the stuff is garbage) or that they can not smoke their cigs. Just do not feel that bad for them.

If they want their freedom back, let them prove it in an election. Until then, let them be slaves to the state.

whole ‘Preservatives are eeeevil’ crap promulgated by so many in this country. It is the product of a lack of understanding of historical context and science. Preservatives contributed greatly to the increased lifespan of people in the world. Why? Well, ‘all-natural’ often includes botulism, staph, salmonella and all kinds of other wonderful bacteria that come with and reproduce on many foodstuffs left unimpeded. Preservatives weren’t invented for jollies; they had a very serious and real motivation. The same with baby formula. Sure, it is a matter of convenience for many mothers; but there are many who have trouble producing enough milk for their baby for a myriad of reasons. Also, some babies aren’t able to breast feed easily (suck reflex is not completely normal). Also, the reality is sadly that many mothers have to work and can’t breastfeed their babies consistently. All this goes to support a very simple and yet somehow (to Bloomberg and others of his ilk) esoteric principle: these issues are best left to health professionals and their patients.

This is the guy who immediately and bizarrely blamed those who didn’t like Obamacare for the times square bombing. There’s got to be a way to forcibly remove him from the Republican party.

Giving new mothers information is a good thing so I agree with that part of the policy. I have a relative who works in maternity health care and the stories I hear are that many young women are truly ignorant of even the basic things, let alone the advanced notion that breast milk is better than formula (generally speaking). But taking steps to make it hard or impossible to get formula is clearly nanny-state territory.

    • http://teresainfortworth.wordpress.com/ Teresa in Fort Worth, TX

I’ve done the research, and I know the facts.

But all of these people who could barely pass the one science class they were required to take in college (“Rocks for Jocks”, no doubt) have the audacity to declare that they – who have done NO research – know what they are talking about….

Why is this “war on women”, as in limiting their CHOICE in the matter any different than the so-called “war on women” the libs screamed about when conservatives argued the contraceptive/abortion issue? Both of these choices involve LIFE – the difference is, abortion takes the life before it’s ever allowed (breastfed or not) – and using formula is merely an attempt to continue a life that’s already here.

is it not, to be Progressive /Liberal /Communitarian in this Land Of Ours ??

    * First-off, we hear continously that we all have our own versions of ‘Truth’ and all versions are equal, none being any more or less worthy, or superior. I believe it’s called ‘Relativism’ in mixed company.

    * Then, along comes the worst of all possible worlds , someone who picks and chooses what to espouse, advancing his own views as superior to any other. Even though he is a traitor-of-sorts to those of like minds, He’s got The Hammer and all who do not fit His World View, and continuing Jihad { i e : ‘struggle’} are Nails, of a sort.
Items to be pounded down flush , and Mentally Placed as notches, as-on a belt or gun-butt.

So This is Where a simple-minded , objective-thinking American has an internal struggle with the above seeming conflict.

Which is it, Blue-Shaded guys and girls? Is it really ‘all about you’ , or do you leave it to ‘guys like him’?
Make up your ever-lovin’ minds, would-ya’-please?

    {……and they cannot figure out why they’re only 1-in-5?}

There are damn few on the left who waste any time on introspection or on the seeming contradictions of their message. It is simply all about power.

Bloomingidiot is a pioneer and a hero to them because he is a lefty and likes to use his power for all sorts of control over the hoi-polloi.

I was taught by my dear departed mother to be kind to the mentally impaired. To protect them and support their families without heightening their embarrassment in a situation they did not create. After the hearing. Surely there is a nice home with room for the Mayor. A place with guided walks in Central Park, and well trained staff, even a lounge for ego driven (over the edge) RINO

    • http://teresainfortworth.wordpress.com/ Teresa in Fort Worth, TX

Shouldn’t it be a woman’s “right” to choose whether or not she wants to breastfeed?

      *tries to hide evil grin*

    • http://teresainfortworth.wordpress.com/ Teresa in Fort Worth, TX

….my daughter with Down syndrome is smarter than this clown. :-)

I know plenty of extraordinarily smart people who can’t be trusted to take care of themselves.

We usually just assign those people a ‘handler” to protect them from themselves (and others) and go about our business…..
