Well…when you say it like THAT Thomas…

…it really does sound bad.

Thomas Sowell has been on fire recently, probably because few people understand the depth of the threat Obama poses to the American experiment as well as he does.

Just one year ago, would you have believed that an unelected government official, not even a Cabinet member confirmed by the Senate but simply one of the many “czars” appointed by the President, could arbitrarily cut the pay of executives in private businesses by 50 percent or 90 percent?

Did you think that another “czar” would be talking about restricting talk radio? That there would be plans afloat to subsidize newspapers– that is, to create a situation where some newspapers’ survival would depend on the government liking what they publish?

Did you imagine that anyone would even be talking about having a panel of so-called “experts” deciding who could and could not get life-saving medical treatments?

Did you?

Sometimes we get so lost in the details, be they of ObamaCare or Cap and Trade or this Czar or that Czar, that we forget to take a step back and look at the totality of the circumstances. Look at what this man has done and is trying to do to this Country in just nine months?

It continues:

Does any of this sound like America?

How about a federal agency giving school children material to enlist them on the side of the president? Merely being assigned to sing his praises in class is apparently not enough.

How much of America would be left if the federal government continued on this path? President Obama has already floated the idea of a national police force, something we have done without for more than two centuries.

We already have local police forces all across the country and military forces for national defense, as well as the FBI for federal crimes and the National Guard for local emergencies. What would be the role of a national police force created by Barack Obama, with all its leaders appointed by him? It would seem more like the brown shirts of dictators than like anything American.

“Does any of this sound like America?”

No, it doesn’t. None of it does. This is the hope and change so many people voted for in November. Obama wasn’t exactly coy about his intentions either. He was more or less unabashed in his desire to remake America, to transform it into something in his own image. Many of us tried to warn our fellow Americans. We failed. These are the repercussions.

Given what’s transpired in less than a year, can anyone imagine where we’ll be in 4 years? Does anyone want to imagine? I’ve always tried to be as diplomatic as I could in these pages when discussing Obama’s foibles. Sure I’ve called him an idiot and a moron, because he is, but I’ve tried not to ascribe nefarious intentions to his actions.

I said yesterday and I’ll say it again, it’s becoming harder and harder each day for me to do so. Collectively these are not the actions of a sane man honoring a sacred oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. These are the actions of a dictator silencing opposition and implementing a radical totalitarian regime. Sorry, there’s just no other way to say it without rationalizing.

Mr. Sowell:

Nothing so epitomizes President Obama’s own contempt for American values and traditions like trying to ram two bills through Congress in his first year– each bill more than a thousand pages long– too fast for either of them to be read, much less discussed. That he succeeded only the first time says that some people are starting to wake up. Whether enough people will wake up in time to keep America from being dismantled, piece by piece, is another question– and the biggest question for this generation.

Contempt. That epitomizes Obama’s feelings toward this Country. If the adage “actions speak louder than words” is still applicable in today’s world, there is no other way to interpret Obama’s ideas about America. He hates America as it was originally founded. He hates the concepts of individual liberty and enumerated, decentralized power.

I challenge you, how else can you possibly interpret his actions? Is there another rational explanation for his moves thus far? I’ve tried, believe me. I’ve tried to give him the benefit of stupidity. I’ve tried to give him the benefit of naivety. I’ve tried to give him the benefit of his being unprepared for the job.

None of them explains his administration. Taken individually or collectively, stupidity, naivety and lack of preparedness simply cannot explain the explicit actions taken by this administration thus far.

Mr. Sowell is right. WWII was the defining event of my grandparents generation. Whether enough Americans wake up and realize what is happening to the greatest country ever conceived on earth before their very eyes in time to stop it, is the defining question of mine.

Thomas Sowell is asking the right questions

pilgrim (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 11:00AM EDT (link)

The one that is troubling to me…

We already have local police forces all across the country and military forces for national defense, as well as the FBI for federal crimes and the National Guard for local emergencies. What would be the role of a national police force created by Barack Obama, with all its leaders appointed by him?

Last week Walter Williams was also asking the right question about what is permissible under the Constitution. I do hope enough people are waking out of slumber to keep America from being dismantled by Obama.

They're all troubling

thatsright (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 11:31AM EDT (link)

That’s why Sowell is so indispensable. I myself have been lost in the labyrinth of Health Care I needed him to lay it out in bullet point just how insane this administration is.

Walter is another one.

I literally wake up every morning and am either encouraged or cynical as to whether we’ll get it in time. I was there on 9/12 and rode that wave for a few weeks.

The bottom line is that we better…we better because if we don’t there will be nothing left worth saving.

Thanks for the comment Pilgrim.

By now we know what the problem is, the question is what are we going to DO about it.

ColdWarrior (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 1:03PM EDT (link)

We conservatives need to get away from the keyboards and out of our chairs for an hour or two a month and DO something that really will make a difference — get to a local GOP meeting and volunteer to become a voting member of the Party, a precinct committeeman. And drag all your conservative friends along with you.

Scozzafava never would have gotten the nod in NY-23 if more conservatives were in the Party there as precinct committeemen. The conservative precinct committeemen got out-voted by the moderates.

Not enough conservatives were involved in the Party nationwide in the 2008 election cycle as voting members of the Party. Indeed, HALF the precinct committeemen slots nationwide were vacant, and the half that are now filled are split about 50-50 between moderates and conservatives. The results of that split, and the inactivity of conservatives WITHIN the Party, are apparent if one looks at our Republican “leaders.”

Not enough of “We the [conservative] People” have deigned, apparently, to sully our hands with the raw nuts and bolts of the Party machinery that elects the Party leadership, endorses the candidates and gets out the vote and informs the voters at the precinct level. But that’s where the power lies. That’s how the Obama-backers beat the Clintons. Bottom line: if you don’t become a precinct committeeman, you don’t have a vote in the elections that determine who leads the Party at the precinct, legislative district, county, state and national levels. I’m guilty as charged; I didn’t have my eyes opened to this simple, powerful fact until the spring of 2008.

Maricopa County, AZ, “Goldwater Country,” has a conservative at the helm of the county GOP by a twenty vote margin out of 800 cast at a county convention at which only 800 precinct committeemen showed up out of 1,900 elected precinct committeeman. And those 1,900 elected precinct committeemen could have been 6,300 or so, because that’s how many slots there were in the county. To represent 694,000 registered Republicans. So, 20 registered Republicans who invested a few hours to become precinct committeemen decided for 694,000 registered Republicans whether they’d have a conservative or a McCain-moderate holding the gavel at the Republican Party county organization.

Arizona, “Goldwater Country,” has a conservative at the helm of the Arizona Republican Party by a similarly close margin. At the state GOP convention earlier this year, the incumbent conservative, Randy Pullen, was almost ousted by McCain-moderate Lisa James, by a margin of 20 votes. Two years ago the margin between the two was FOUR votes.

I hope you’ll DO something WITHIN the Party as a precinct committeeman. It’s vitally important to the future of our Republic. Those here who already are precinct committeemen, or are in the process of becoming one, know what I’m talking about.

Here’s Martin Knight’s take on it a while back here at RedState:

http://www.redstate.com/martin_a_knight/2009/05/05/the-committeeman-project/

Happy with the current “leaders” of the GOP locally, at your State HQ and at the RNC? Then do nothing. Want change? Become a precinct committeemen so you can VOTE.

If you want to read an account of how Scozzafava got the nod, go here: http://www.tcotreport.com/23ny1.html

If you’d like to read an account of how the Tea Partiers and other conservative grass root-ers came together and invaded the Clark County, NV (includes Las Vegas) Republican Party, became precinct committeemen, and then replaced the moderate leadership with a new slate of conservatives, go here:

http://marionsword.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!1B80DAF0A76159D5!924.entry

Oh, and by the way, virtually every incumbent Republican does not want you to know about this, even the conservatives. Why? Because even the incumbent conservatives fear a backlash at the polls in 2010 and, if the Party becomes a conservative juggernaut, even they might lose their primarry to a “more conservative” Republican challenger. Remember, virtually all the incumbent conservative Republican House members “went along to get along” on all sorts of spending votes during the time the Republicans controlled the House and Senate under Bush. That’s a big vulnerability a “fresh face, non-professional politician” conservative challenger could exploit. And the incumbents know it. So, mum’s the word on the power of the precinct committeeman.

Ask yourself when you last heard a conservative Republican “leader” implore conservative registered Republicans to take tthe next step and come into the Party as voting members of it — as precinct committeemen?

Thank you.

Spot on CW.

I was there on 9/12 and I’m headed to help Chris Christie win here in NJ tonight.

I do what I can where I can. My state, NJ, doesn’t have a fair share of Conservatives…yet, but when one springs up I’ll do my part to make them happen.

Personally, I owe my country my service before I throw my own hat in the ring, which I will be doing you can be sure of that. Give me 8 years and I’ll be ready to go.

In the meantime, until I go, I’ll do my best with the pen to make conservatism the de facto ideology in America, as it was meant to be.

Thanks for the comment.

Must be hard being a conservative in New Jersey!

Thanks for all you are doing!

I thought when I got to AZ I’d be in conservative utopia. In some regards, that’s the case (for example, compared to CA, regarding the right to keep and bear arms, AZ is a paradise). But when I got involved in the Republican Party here, I quickly learned that not enough conservatives even know that the office of precinct committeeman exists. I meet long-time, good conservatives all the time who have not an inkling of how Party leaders are elected or how, for that matter, Michael Steele came to be our “leader.” One thirty-something guy told the other night at a Republican gathering in support of our great Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, that while he had had a “government” class in the Arizona public school he attended, he didn’t think he’d ever had a “civics” class. And therein lies a lot of the problem.

Best regards. And I’ll be praying that Christie pulls it out.

In fact, my co-founder of the website can’t even attach his name to the site for fear of his job. That’s the truth. It’s ridiculous.

Your ‘civics’ anecdote is precise. That IS the problem. I’m a thirty-something guy myself and while I am aware of the precinct method, I wouldn’t have a clue about how to get involved.

I may try and work up a post around your site for educational as well as action purposes. I have some contacts here in Monmouth County that I may be able to tap towards that end.

Thanks again for the comments, information and sympathy…Nov 3rd could be a good day here in Jersey.

Russ, thanks for the link! I wish every conservative blog had a "Take Action" section.

ColdWarrior (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 3:32PM EDT (link)

Or call it the “No More Scozzafavas!” section.

Where the conservative blogger would tell his readers where to go to get involved at the grass roots level in the Republican Party. In my case it’s easy — our Maricopa County web site at least has some tools on it allowing citizens to find out what legislative district they live in (most don’t know) and how to locate their district chairman and information about when and where their legislative district Republican Party organization meets. They can go there and volunteer to become a precinct committeemen. Right now, odds are very good that there’s a vacancy — two-thirds of the slots were vacant after the 2008 elections.

I’ve surveyed the web trying to find information in every state about how to become a precinct committeeman. The terminology varies from state to state. You’d think if the RNC really wanted “new blood” in the Party they’d compile this basic civics information and put it on the GOP.com web site in an easy to find spot. If you thought that, you’d be wrong.

They only want you to register and to send money. Or engage in get out the vote efforts. They don’t want you to become an actual voting member of the Party. THAT would threaten the status quo, which those in power, or near the reins of power, are all happy to leave just as is.

Well, if we conservatives want to really change that status quo, the BEST way to do it by INVADING AND HIJACKING the Party from the status quo. Become precinct committeemen and vote in new leadership. And endorse better, more conservative candidates in the primary elections. Ensuring the best conservative candidate wins.

That’s what I’m working on. Let’s “take action” and make it happen. No more Scozzafavas!

If you know the process in New Jersey, please add it to your blog and then I’ll link directly to it.

Thanks again.

Looks like they really hide the ball in NJ.

ColdWarrior (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 4:26PM EDT (link)

Russ,
I went to the New Jersey Republican Party web site.

www.njgop.org.

They publish the “rules” for the state Party committee.

There’s a page for the counties.

Some of the counties have web sites. Clicked on a few of them, including Sussex County, which claims to have the “strongest” Republican contingent in the state.

http://www.sussexcountygop.com/Welcome.htm

Clicked on the Action Center link:

http://www.sussexcountygop.com/ACTION%20CENTER.htm

They want your money and your time. But not a word about how you go about electing the Sussex County GOP leadership.

I suggest you go to your county’s list of officers and contact the lowest person on the totem pole (maybe start even lower, at the township or city level) and ask them how you can become a voting member of the Party. The lowest person on the totem pole, I suspect, will be more forthcoming than someone higher up. And ask for the RULES (constitution and by-laws) of the county and township organizations.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I talked to my brother and we’re going to get to the bottom of it one way or the other. I think you found a terrific idea and something many people can do who don’t have the time or inclination to run themselves.

Mike. I couldn’t agree more.

Rest assured that I, for one, do not now and never have ascribed to the church of political correctness. This is my Country. This is my Liberty. I acknowledge the need for limited Government to do that which I cannot by myself: fight enemies foreign and domestic, pave the roads and arbitrate disputes amongst citizens. That’s pretty much it.

We have a high tolerance in this Country for government shenanigans, but it is not unlimited. We have a breaking point to which I pray each day we never reach. But if we do, so be it.

It's a 1000% worse when you add foreign policy

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 11:49AM EDT (link)

I hope Sowell will write a second column about the radical changes in foreign policy that (assuming we survive as a nation, which these policies put in doubt) will destroy our reputation for a generation at least.

For starters, how about this one:

Does this sound like America?

A government that is actively seeking to economically destroy, destabilize, and overthrow a constitutional republic in order to reinstall as president a proven traitor who has admitted that he used fraud to gain his election and who is determined to turn his nation into a Marxist dictatorship – and is leading the charge for the rest of the world to join in.

One of the most terrible side-effects (or perhaps intention) with the administration’s provoking unending domestic crises is that foreign affairs has largely disappeared from the newspapers – or at least any substantive commentary (with the exception of Afghanistan).

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Infinitely worse

thatsright (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 11:56AM EDT (link)

No question.

I’ve done a bunch of pieces on Honduras and how our new policy is 180 degrees from what it’s been over more than 200 years. And how wrong it is.

http://www.thats-right.com/rapid-fire-rightness/2009/9/29/more-honduran-hypocrisy.html

We don’t even have to get to the middle east to recognize how insane Obama’s policies are. People have been thinking in this Country for many years just how bad the Left’s policies are, but isn’t it just worse when you actually see them in practice?

Makes me long for Bill Clinton on the Dem side, who at least recognized that his talk didn’t work and never would. Obama BELIEVES. That’s the problem.
