Note – A previous version of this post was entitled “RedState Endorses Mark Begich, Democrat For Senate, and Ethan Berkowitz, Democrat for House At Large in Alaska.” We have changed the title and amended the post to retract the formal endorsement out of respect for RedState Contributors who did not feel they could be associated in good conscience with an endorsement of two pro-abortion Democrats (though we note that Ted Stevens is also not pro-life). However, our point remains: the GOP, the conservative cause and even specifically the pro-life cause will be better off if Stevens and Young are defeated and the tarnish they carry with them are excised from the GOP.
We stand at a perilous moment in American politics, with thereal possibility that the Democrats could get to 60 votes in the Senate. This is no time for litmus tests of party loyalty, for abandoning our own. But we must make one exception: good conscience compels us to advise Alaskans not to vote for Ted Stevens for Senate or Don Young for the at-large House seat in Alaska. We leave it to the individual voter whether to abstain or take the step of voting affirmatively for Mark Begich, the Democrat mayor of Anchorage, and candidate for the U.S. Senate, or for Ethan Berkowitz for the at-large House seat in Alaska.
We have no illusions that Begich will be a good Senator (although perhaps he can bring to DC some bipartisan oomph to theneed to exploit Alaska’s energy resources for the good of the nation), or Berkowitz a good Congressman. But Ted Stevens and Don Young have been a pox on the Republican house for too long – too addicted to the pork barrel, too fast and loose with ethics. Stevens’ conviction in federal court today is the exclamation pointon an era in Republican politics in general and Alaska politics in particular that needs to end (and which Gov. Sarah Palin has been battling to clean up). Republicans need to clean our own house. Washington cannot too soon see the end of Stevens and Young.

She can appoint Lt. Gov. Parnell to the remainder of Stevens’ term so that Alaska can be represented for the next 2+ months by someone who is not a convicted criminal. Furthermore, she should say that if Stevens is reelected she will ask that he agree not to be sworn-in (again, appointing Parnell instead). Achance (Diary) Monday, October 27th at 4:43PM EDT (link)and an additional House member.
This goes to the root of why parties like the AIP thrive here. I’ve made the arguments many times about Alaska’s having been ruthlessly exploited by the United States both before Statehood and after. We were the major contribution to the joint Anglo-American initiative to break the OPEC price after the ’74 Embargo and we GAVE OIL AWAY in the late ’80s and early ’90s so YOU could have a two decade boom. We tried to get some of the things you take for granted by reaching in that burgeoning federal Treasury. Now we know how you feel about us and about people from NOWHERE generally. Most of you know I don’t like Sarah Palin much, but I like the way she’s been treated by people who purport to be my “fellow Americans” even less. Wait until you see what the price of oil will be by the late second or early third year of a BHO Administration, and guess where you won’t be able to turn to for the oil to save your butts. I really like expensive oil and really don’t give a damn what that does to the Lower 48. Aligning oneself with the Republican Party is extraordinarily difficult for any Alaskan; just look at how Palin has actually governed and, more to the point, look how she’s been treated by the Republican illuminati. We’re no more comfortable with the would-be Theocrats of the Right than we are comfortable with the lower-case theocrats of the Left. You just made it easier to drop the pretense and just admit that it is all up for the highest bidder. Got oil?

But Begich is another story. He will be there for at least six years. He will vote for 4.5 years as Reid, Clinton, Schumer, Durbin, Leahy, etc. TELL him to vote. The last 1.5 years as he gears up for re-election they will let him load up with more stevens-like pork and cast a vote of two that appears “conservative” (see Landrieu), but otherwise he will be a lackey for the left-wing leadership.

Stevens must be voted in to HOLD THE SEAT
He must then RESIGN (OR Republicans in Senate demand Ethics hearing and ultimate REMOVAL/DISMISSAL)
Whatever AK law allows, GOV. APPOINTMENT of new Senator or Special election (should as allow us) TO HOLD SEAT.
McCain/Palin need to just not allow themselves to be distracted, which is what the MSM will do to/with them, on this. “That whole situation is unfolding in the Courts, and we will with-hold comment until it has played out there fully! We want to TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES FACING THE NATION…” and go on with whatever else to say…
PERIOD! SIMPLE!

olderandwiser Monday, October 27th at 10:31PM EDT (link)for the Un-Endorsement of corruption. One of the reasons Obama is running so well is because the Republicans in congress made such hypocrites of themselves by porking it up so much, not exercising the discipline they had claimed to have, showing themselves to be no different than the “Spendy” democrats. The level of disgust with the republican party, created by this republican congressional hypocrisy, will hurt our country deeply when it is acted out in anti-John McCain votes by the swing voters who voted republican last time and trusted the republican message, only to be betrayed.

Sean (SIConservative) (Diary) Monday, October 27th at 10:51PM EDT (link)The fact that your state has oil doesn’t mean that the rest of us have to put up with arguably the two most corrupt members of Congress. It’s Republicans like Rep. Young, Sen. Stevens, and former Rep. Foley that have put the GOP in a position to get blown out in a week. You are now defending a convicted felon who has been embarrassing the Party for years and will likely cost us at least one other Senate seat, Sen. Mitch McConnell’s, if not more races, in a week. As a Party, we can’t start to recover from what happened two years ago and what’s about to happen until we get rid of the corruption in our own Party and regain the trust of the American people. If you not only don’t want to help us do that but actually want to defend those creeps, then you’re part of the problem.
Alaskan Republicans
exitsfunnel Monday, October 27th at 11:34PM EDT (link)It’s easy (and justified) to blame Stevens and Young for seaking reelection but given their past behavior why would one have expected them to have done the right thing and stepped down? What I don’t understand is how they didn’t get beat in the primaries? Seriously, the Alaskan GOP primary voters essentially made the conscious decision to hand these seats to the democrats. It’s just sickening.

Achance (Diary) Tuesday, October 28th at 12:14AM EDT (link)if they’d both decided to spend more time with their families.
Sorta in their defense though, I understand a bit of the arrogance. They both came to office when Alaska was a Democrat stronghold. Remember when Power was “liquor, labor, and Natives?” They won national office when Alaska was Bill Egan’s private playground and when Duane Carlson and Jess Carr could make or break anyone or anything. It kinda gave them a “they can’t get me” attitude about political life. I can’t justify it really, but I’ve had it too. It’s like the Churchill line about how satisfying it is to get shot at and missed. It is supremely satisfying to keep on doing what you were planning to keep on doing with the full knowledge that the other side wants you dead. Living well is the best revenge!

Vote for the scumbag just to get another election
gensec (Diary) Tuesday, October 28th at 12:40AM EDT (link)The Directors’ make a valid argument in favor of voting against Stevens, but I’m inclined to disagree.
If the choice was between another 6 years of Stevens polluting the Senate and our party, vs. Begich filling the seat for 6 years, I’d probably agree vote for the Democrat. In this case though, if Stevens wins, Republican senators would promptly move to expel Stevens from the Senate.
After maybe a few months’ soap opera, a reelected Stevens would be sent home to Alaska to get his affairs in order before going to prison. Then however Alaska law handles vacancies, eventually we get a special election to fill the remainder of the term – and maybe then Alaska Republicans can manage to nominate a candidate who doesn’t reek.
As for the other embarrassment Don Young, I’ll agree, vote for the Democrat Berkowitz. We don’t have the benefit of an impending prison sentence to promptly get rid of a reelected Young, and anyway in 2 years Berkowitz would face a GOP challenger.
Define Corruption.
Achance (Diary) Tuesday, October 28th at 12:48AM EDT (link)If it is proven that either of them traded a vote for a personal benefit, he should be in jail. We’ll see if Stevens’ DC conviction survives appeal; fundamentally any Republican could be sentenced to death there just on the charge of being a Republican – that’s why the holdover prosecutors chose the particular charges. Another one to chalk up to GWB’s compassion in not firing everybody in the federal government that he could and then chickening out over the attornies when the Democrats challenged him.
All that said; there really aren’t a lot of Congresspeople who haven’t made their careers from “bringing home the bacon.” As I’ve said many times before, I’d be happy to give up Alaska’s “pork” any time the rest of the Country gives up theirs. No takers? Didn’t think so.

AKSteveB (Diary) Tuesday, October 28th at 12:52AM EDT (link)defending them. I just know, having moved up here in 2001, after spending my first 38 years in the lower 48, that things are different up here. I’ve tried to explain in some of my postings about Gov. Palin, that even though this state is physically large, it is still, politically and socially a small town. Most of us are no more than a degree or two of separation from most others here in terms of who we know. This is much more a libertarian-ish state than a conservative one as an example. At the same time, we’re probably the most socialist as well. Contradiction..you bet, and there lots of those up here. I don’t much like Young, Stevens, or Palin myself, but I’m a relative newcomer here (so is anyone here less than 30 years really). The feelings of people here towards these folks are very personal. There are a lot of us who don’t think much of Gov. Palin but still see some of the bashing actually being aimed at us. There have been people on local talkradio actually crying over the Stevens verdict. Even as someone who thinks Uncle Ted overstayed his time, this strikes me as a sad way to see it end. He’s really much more ..well cheap ..than corrupt. As for Don Young, I’d serve on that firing squad myself. He is one of humankinds more loathsome creatures.

There is no way that you can write this and endorse two Dems over two Republicans at this late in the game and beat the crap out of conservatives who like Paul (I don’t … I think he’s crazy on a couple of levels) and others who pound on McCain.
You wax eloquent on “the primary is over its time to get behind McCain” and then pull this stuff.
Stevens — okay .. maybe … but TACTICALLY, it’s better to elect Stevens and then have him kicked out of the Senate and replaced in an election then to put a Democrat in now. Stevens wins and is kicked out or resigns then you have a pretty good chance to run the AG or the Lt. Gov against a Dem in the special election.
Don Young — hate his guts, but he’s not convicted of anything. I sent Parnell money.
This is a tactical mistake and hypocritical as well.

I was a retread named Zombie Flanders / randomkid. Tuesday, October 28th at 1:47AM EDT (link)of said Liberal blogs, I will use the example of Daily Kos since its the one most similar to here in layout that I read. And they don’t generally do endorsements the way they do here. Like for example, when McCain clinched the nomination, the people in charge here made a big front-page endorsement. No such thing happened on Daily Kos. Part of this was that RS was more divided than dkos over the primary, but also because it’s just a difference in the way the two are run. If you asked kos what he thought of the freezer guy, he’d say that he doesn’t like the him and would say good riddance to him, but that he doesn’t do endorsements, and even if he did it would be personal and not for the whole site.
You don’t even have to like kos to agree with me; he would say (I would agree) that even from a cynical POV, Jefferson’s presence does more harm than good, considering it is only one seat (in a district with a PVI D+28, at a time that Dems are overperforming those numbers) but always provides a counterpoint to Dem arguments about corruption.

You don't have a line
Sean (SIConservative) (Diary) Tuesday, October 28th at 5:31AM EDT (link)The guy has been convicted by a jury of his piers. What more could you possibly want? Or do you think that the jury was filled with DSCC staffers? The Stevens case could go through the appeals process all the way to the Supreme Court, with him losing unanimously all the way, and you’d still say that every judge ruling on the case was picking on him because he’s Alaskan. When you don’t report hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal favors from people who stand to benefit personally from your actions as a government official, there’s a problem, one that’s punishable by over three decades in prison.
As for being brought up on charges for being a Republican, I doubt the prosecution would have had enough evidence to convict in his case. That said, that has nothing to do with why he should have resigned from the Senate long ago. He has embarassed his Party, his state, and his country, and will continue to do so as long as he fights the conviction. He belongs in prison and will hopefully live out his days there.
Finally, as for the earmark deal, I’ll take it without hesitation provided that the money that currently goes to earmarks instead goes either toward debt reduction or tax relief rather than to more bureaucracy.
ak law
akrunner Tuesday, October 28th at 7:13AM EDT (link)First, I highly doubt Stevens would resign.
However, if he did, Palin is unable to appoint a successor after the nepotism of the Murkowski appointment (people up here were furious). There was a ballot initiative that removed from the governor the ability to appoint a successor in cases of a sitting US senator’s resignation, and instead calls for a special election within 90 days. My understanding is that there would be no interim representation, and Alaska would just have an empty seat for up to three months.
Why is this idea gaining traction?

We can have a good argument
Achance (Diary) Tuesday, October 28th at 11:24AM EDT (link)about what constitutes a jury of ones’ peers. We can also have a good argument about residents of DC sitting on either federal grand juries or trial juries.
There’s a reason the prosecutors chose the trivial reporting charges that have never been brought against anyone before. I suspect you could round up a pretty good mess of Congresscritters with a little scrutiny. They wanted a charge they could bring in DC! You’ll note that they’ve done nothing with the much more substantial allegations about earmarking to benefit his son and former staffers; they’d have to bring those charges to the federal district court in Anchorage.
Alaska juries have not been reticent to convict our own when corruption charges, even fairly flimsy ones, have been brought against them. We have three legislators in the clink right now and one more probably on the way over their dealings with the same Bill Allen.
I just really don’t believe that Stevens or any other relatively wealthy white Republican elected official can get a fair trial in DC. I know that were I ever charged with some sort of official misconduct I’d move Heaven and Earth to try to get a change of venue out of Juneau; it would be hard for any high ranking public officer to get a fair trial here and all but impossible for a high-ranking Republican public officer to get one. Likewise, when I was with the State, I was more than happy to make six figure settlement offers even in cases I thought we should win to avoid the tender mercies of a Juneau jury. Capital cities are company towns and jury trials are an easy place to take it out on the company. In DC you get to throw geography, race, and class in the mix as well.

What I'm confused about
AKSteveB (Diary) Wednesday, October 29th at 3:25AM EDT (link)and probably always will be is..what the hell was the motivation to go after Ted. Is he factually guilty of what he was charged with, yeah. You can’t really blame the jury, the charges were such low lying fruit, that they would have had to have practiced jury nullification to acquit.
The reality of this thing is Bill Allen was a guy who liked being a bigshot. Stevens wasn’t big on spending his own money, he played a bit fast and loose with dotting his i’s and crossing his t’s, they raid the Girdwood place and all they could come up with was this minor stuff. They had to know nobody was gonna make their career on this, and well ..the prosecution sucked. In the meantime, no charges towards the kid (Ben Stevens) or Don Young. Too strange.

I don't know. I'm a lot closer to the ground
Achance (Diary) Wednesday, October 29th at 3:53AM EDT (link)than Stevens and I was astounded by what a seemingly minor remodel of my dining room just cost me. Living the way he does between AK and DC, mostly DC, it is unlikely that he’d have a clue what the work really cost and may well have thought he was paying for it. Add to that the notorious cheapness and sense of entitlement that most Alaska politicians have. One thing you’ll NEVER see is an Alaska elected official reaching for his own wallet or picking up the tab. Don’t know how long you’ve been around, but Rep. Vic Kohring, now a guest of the US, was notorious for showing up at all the “receptions” and stuffing his pockets with food. I like smoked salmon and king crab as well as the next guy, but I really can’t see stuffing either in my suit jacket pockets!
As to the rest, if they could make the case against Ben, they would have. There is the slightest possibility that somebody in the Bush Administration noticed what the FBI was doing here and told them to lay off until after the election. Or, tactically, they now have a conviction against the old man that could cause him to die in jail; that is a serious bargaining position. That’s what they’ve done with Bill Allen; the old Roman thing: slit your wrists and we’ll spare your family. They’re still holding that over him. You’ll note he hasn’t been sentenced and he won’t be until the FBI is done here. I know the guy and had lots of opportunities to pal around in Room 604 – thank God I was smarter than that. I’ll guarantee you that he would recite any script that the FBI gave him to keep his family from being charged and to allow them to keep some of the money from getting rid of VECO. The FBI plays a nasty, nasty game.

Thank you for the endorsement, Cowboy!
Achance (Diary) Wednesday, October 29th at 6:30PM EDT (link)As the previous poster points out, and as the Directors didn’t consider, the ONLY way to hold this seat is by electing Stevens then forcing him to step down. Then the Alaska law is invoked and we can take our best shot with an election; that won’t be easy either.
Begich, like Knowles before him, has been a fairly popular Anchorage mayor. He has the formidable Knowles organization, and one Helluva bunch of DNC resources and money. I really don’t know which R would volunteer for that meatgrinder. The only one that comes to mind that has anything like the money from his own resources is Johne Binkley, but he ran a dismal campaign against Palin when he ran for Governor. ‘Course, the only reason he was running was he was bitterly angry with Murkowski for not appointing him to the Senate. Mike Miller is a good conservative and former President of the Senate. Has money but not as much as Binkley. Didn’t do real well in the primary against Lisa Murkowski, but he really didn’t want to beat her, just make her defend the right so Knowles couldn’t run right of her. Don’t know that Mike could win statewide, but he came within 500 and change votes of being Lt. Gov. and his brother was a Republican Lt. Gov.
Since Sarah Palin “outed” Randy Ruderich, Republican organization has been tenuous at best. Since the FBI started camping out in Alaska, the Party has been in disarray. I don’t know how many established Republicans would walk into the meatgrinder. I very consciously established for myself a “bad boy” reputation throughout my career; I just wish I’d done some of the things people think I did. By the time I was an appointee, whenever the slime machine revved up, I was just living down to my reputation and nobody noticed or cared. That said, even I have lost my stomach for it in an environment where you simply have to assume that anybody you’re talking to, no matter how well or long you’ve known them, is wearing a wire and is a “cooperating” witness trying to goad or entrap you. It ain’t a pretty place these days!
