The Leadership Struggle Ahead

We now move to the leadership struggle for the House and Senate Republicans.

We have no preferences in these races yet. But we have a question that Messrs. McConnell, Boehner, and Blunt must answer:

How are you qualified to lead after two consecutive elections of significant losses?

There are others who are just as qualified to lead, some might argue more qualified to lead.

in the Senate, there are Senators Kyl and Cornyn. In the House, there are Congressmen Ryan of Wisconsin and Cantor of Virginia.

They are able men.

If Messrs. McConnell, Boehner, and Blunt cannot adequately explain why they deserve to keep the reins of power given two consecutive elections of losses, we must ask that they step aside.

The voters have spoken. They have rejected the status quo again. The present leadership is part of the same Republican status quo voters rejected two years ago — now rejected a second time.

The present leadership better have an excellent answer to the question posed.

I think the more important question is: can we re-energize the party, or will we wallow in self-pity? Will we end up looking around at what is left of our Conservative movement, and call it “not enough” or will we call it a Starting Point?

We Can Not allow this to mess continue to dampen the conservative spirits. It is what lost us the last TWO elections.

We have what we have. Let’s MAKE something out of it.

My vote is for Cornyn and Cantor.

c17wife Wednesday, November 5th at 7:27AM EST (link)

Cornyn will stand up to amnesty. And when Cantor gets on fire, watch out.

Personally, I think a group of them should hold weekly press conferences and be on the Sunday shows screaming at the top of their lungs about every GD travesty Barack, Nancy and Harry tries to foist upon this nation. And every single one of them had better vote a resounding NO on everything that any right minded conservative would oppose.

Duty is ours, outcomes belong to God.~Mike Pence

New leadership in both houses is needed

Andy Smith Wednesday, November 5th at 7:29AM EST (link)

I say elevated Mike Pence to minority leader in the House. Make him more visible, get him on more talk shows and TV. I think Pence can make a capable Presidential or VP candidate down the line.
In the Senate, I don’t really have an issue with McConnell, but I think John Thune and Jeff Sessions would be great #2’s in the Senate. I think Thune especially is the future conservative voice in the Senate.
You’re right. We’ve had two “purgings” and we need to make sure we don’t point fingers. Let’s get fresh ideas on how to get to the soultions, get younger, and fight to make more inroads with minorities. Don’t abandon conservative principles, but make sure we have people to convey how our solutions reach those who vote against us just because we happen to be the “white person” party.

Congressman Ryan

csstudent Wednesday, November 5th at 7:34AM EST (link)

Did anybody happen to see his interview on Fox last night where he talked about how the Republican party needed a house cleaning(those were his words not mine)?

Let Cong. Cantor take the highest position in the House.

Rod_Patrick Wednesday, November 5th at 7:36AM EST (link)

Let us start build these leaders.

I HAVE ENOUGH OF BUSH, MCCAIN, Boehner, Snowe, etc. who think bi-partisanship will be good for Republicans and the country.

Let the fight begin. No honeymoon.

I am for a youth movement.

kyle8 Wednesday, November 5th at 7:36AM EST (link)

The old guys in the party, they have proven to be worse than failures. We will get no where with them.

I support the youngest members for leadership and I call upon the party to begin immediately to search for young, attractive CONSERVASTIVE candidates.

It is not too early to pave the way for the house elections. Here in Texas, we can find a lot of good candidates, many of which are good conservative and minority candidates.

The party spend huge amounts of money in the past trying to keep a lot of old fossils elected, who were not even very good Republicans.

ONE THING IS CERTAIN, we do not have to run from conservatism. Because, the Democrats will move so far to the left there will actually be some real noticeable difference in the parties.

It is important that we offer a real alternative.

The status quo leadership rejected

Joe_Cor Wednesday, November 5th at 8:02AM EST (link)

in 2006 and 2008 was the non-leadership of George W. Bush. He fatally damaged the GOP brand by passively letting himself be whacked like a pinatta while “reaching out” to those visciously attacking him. Perhaps the silver lining to this dreadful election is that we can move on from “New Tone” to actually articulating and fighting for our princicples.

Agreed

Jonbontx Wednesday, November 5th at 8:03AM EST (link)

The Republicans need to be front and center telling the public about every bad policy/decision made by the Dems, over and over and over, until the point gets driven home. That has been the problem with this election and the 2006 election, they sit back and say nothing, let the Dems hang everything around the Republicans neck without a peep from the Republicans. No wonder we can’t win anything. They also need to hit home what the true meaning of conservative is. There needs to be a house cleaning of the RINOs, all of the good Conservatives have been run out and we are left with this apeasement crap. Enough is enough!!!! If things go as badly as we think with Obama as POTUS, then the true conservatives can swoop in and save the day.

Old republicans and congressmen in the house also failed.

Rod_Patrick Wednesday, November 5th at 8:22AM EST (link)

Let them resign from their post and allow new, young leaders to fight the Democrats!

I agree.

Rod_Patrick Wednesday, November 5th at 8:28AM EST (link)

As much as I loved him, Bush is the main cause of our downfall in the last 2 elections. He has never really defended himself…thus he has never defended his brand, the Republican Party.

Pandering and bipartisanship are the same as taking a cobra as a pet.

The cobras to the Party are those Bush minions and the rest of the moderates. Bush has been betrayed by the same people whom he helped during his presidency. Sadly, he forgot us who voted for him.

Wrong perscription

deltar Wednesday, November 5th at 8:31AM EST (link)

c17wife and Jonbontx,

You think the answer is more negativity and anger, shouting and discord.

That’s not leadership, the people want hope.

The Republicans are dehydrated and you want them to drink saltwater.

No more "moderates"

Doug_n_TX Wednesday, November 5th at 8:51AM EST (link)

We need to do like the Dhimmicrats and purge the mushy moderates out. Those who ran as conservatives did pretty much okay. Cornyn easily won (even though I didn’t like his vote for the bailout bill) while Liddy Dole lost. It’s time we demand that unapologetic conservatives are our candidates.

MEDIA VOICES

MCPO_Airdale Wednesday, November 5th at 8:53AM EST (link)

It doesn’t matter unless, somehow, the corrupt media can be changed.

The blatant bias has just won them an election. The media will now be, in some respects, without constraint. They will ensure the silencing of any dissent of their president and their agenda.

I doubt, no matter who the leadership, that any right of center message will be transmitted.

Bzzt! Wrong answer. Neither Cornyn or Cantor

c17wife Wednesday, November 5th at 8:54AM EST (link)

fit the “angry” meme. Quite frankly, that is the left’s M.O.
Both are principled conservatives that have demonstrated they have a spine and cajones.
In Cantor, we have youth, good looks, and an articulate speaker. Isn’t that what we need in this American Idol folly electoral process we find ourselves in? All the better that he actually has some SUBSTANCE behind it all.

Duty is ours, outcomes belong to God.~Mike Pence

And do you consider it leadership

Jonbontx Wednesday, November 5th at 8:54AM EST (link)

to sit back and say nothing when the Dems blame the Republicans for something that was the Dems fault??

The main focus of this election was the economy, and whose neck did Barry hang that around, hint it wasn’t his own party. Had McCain hit Barry and the Dems on the failings of Freddy and Fannie, and assigned blame where blame was due, then the outcome of the election may of been different.

Right prescription.

spainishirish Wednesday, November 5th at 8:54AM EST (link)

I wrote this in 2006, and I do so again.

The media is our enemy.

The Left is our enemy.

The only way to regain Congress, and we can do it in two years if timidity is not part of our character, is to call the left-wing on the carpet for every bad policy and decision it makes. We have and, thank God will continue to have, outlets outside the left-wing media to voice our concerns and, yes, righteous anger.

We were given a break last night. As I write this, we could continue to control at least 43 Senate seats and Pelosi doesn’t have enough House seats to go off the deep end. We need to increase those margins, and Me-Tooism won’t get us there.

Fight, fight, fight. McConnell has and will. Let us see have House leadership who will do the same.

I agree with your sentiment

SpL Wednesday, November 5th at 9:01AM EST (link)

I will also add that finding something to build our party on for the new days ahead is crucial unless we want to continue into Democrat control. What will it be like to be under such total democrat control? hmmmmm.

Constantly pointing out Dem errors, bad bills, etc. Well that doesn’t sound like fun but it’s also what brought Dems to the forefront: criticisms, accusations, deflecting attn from their own bad people. However, eventually they found a “force” within their own party that they could be not just okay with, or jazzed about, but well, there are no words other than worshipful, passionate, completely gone out of their minds over. They have their chicken in every pot and more.

The graceful media proved this as they threw off all decency if they had any and campaigned for Obama outright. Followers showed this by teaching their children to sing new songs of hope on behalf of their beloved.

Now we are where we are and I think we’re all tired of apologizing for being Republicans as well as being angry and fighting a culture war. And defending Republican leaders…from Democrats and each other.

I agree completely with WSJ who blames congress (R & D) for being so divisive. So let’s rethink the old political formula. Let us build the party into a force and quit apologizing and explaining to ourselves why we’re not ready to lead America.

Sadly, I think McCain was one of the few people who really was bipartisan in nature and apparently the country voted againt that…

ps: circumstances are a huge factor and we should be ready to offer an alternative to leftism.

I’m tired of compromising my principles for the sake of “party unity” and to “protect” Republicans against an admittedly Leftist media. I know many of the RedState Directors were for it but anyone who supported either bailout package has proven themselves to me to be unworthy of leading the GOP.

I dont trust anybody that hs to run in 2010. That should be an automatic disqualifier. Little less skeptical of 2012, but those who are safe until 2014 are best postioned to focus on the Hill.

Kyl may be an endangered species. Coryn and McConnell fit the bill. The leader needs to be focused on tactics 100% of the time. Not on courting hispanice vote in Arizona.

Senate Minority Leader the 2nd Most Powerful Job in the Country

Spartan4Life Wednesday, November 5th at 9:24AM EST (link)

Our 44 senators are all that stand between the American people and Pelosi/Obama policies. It will be that leader’s job to decide when to stand on principle, somehow hold their caucus together, and take their case to the American people.

We need somebody really, really good in this spot. It is our only chance to begin our comeback in 2010.

but not by promising to throw open the borders, which by the way is not even a popular idea among Latino’s. We need to appeal to job creation, support for small businesses, education choice, and family values.

This will be hard to do if the Democrats actually do a good job with the economy, but that is not likely to happen.

Our Leaders Cannot Be Worried About Being Re-elected like Kyl

Swamp_Yankee Wednesday, November 5th at 9:31AM EST (link)

With respect to the Hispanics, Obama will lead us in our direction. Is does not matter what we offer if he gives them more. McCain gave them a lot and they gave him nothing back.

If Obama goes that route, it opens up the union vote, the Lou Dobbs vote.

Obama will have to make choices now. He cannot just pander. Sooner or later he will piss certain groups off. We need to be alert and win the support of the disillusioned.

I second the nomination of Jeff Sessions. Shelby is a pretty solid conservative, but Sessions is stronger and more willing to speak out.

Sessions was just re-elected, so he has the longer-term prospect, too (not that it has made any noticeable difference in his stand on issues).

Jason Chaffetz (UT) should be a good new voice in the party. He won his first term last night. I have already written him, pleading him to stand up for conservative principles while in congress. I have every reason to believe he will do so.

I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon. I seek opportunity to develop whatever talents God gave me–not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed.

liberalrepublican Wednesday, November 5th at 10:24AM EST (link)

For R’s to compete in the future and win, we have to do a better job of attracting Latino and African American voters.

Ironically, one of the outcomes of the Obama victory may be that there is a feeling of the battle being won on the racial front and there may be an opportunity to appeal to people on an ideological basis - not just a racial basis.

95% of the African American community voted for Obama & 2/3’s of the Latino community - I simply don’t believe the percentages are anywhere near those levels on a ideological basis.

“Liberty is to faction what air is to fire, an aliment without which it instantly expires”, (John Madison- Federalist Papers #10). Bi-partisanship merely for the sake of bi-partisanship is a masochistic and painful fetish. It must be excised from our elected Republicans’ psyches. The Democrats always insist on us being bi-partisan, but they seldom ever practice it themselves. Having differences and fighting for unwatered down conservative causes is GOOD. Being proud and unapologetic for being conservative is what most of our leaders have seemed to lose. We will win again if we elect leaders that understand this or force the ones that are there to have a comin’ to Jesus moment. If we can’t accomplish this, we’ll wonder in the desert for 40 more years.

52 years old and I think it is long past time to either ask or, if we have to, push these old “reach across the isle” dinosaurs out of the way.

Look at who had the most trouble getting elected. Right her in Minnesota Norm Coleman hasn’t won against Al Franken.

I want to see people like Gov. Palen, Rep. Bachmann and Rep. Kline in there, both of them won big in their districts, even after national news went after Bachmann, she still won by 5%. This is in liberal Minnesota.

For the sake of the party, we need good articulate, principled, telegenic, candidates. We should be concentrating on getting 435 candidates to run for congress and 100 good candidates for Senate and start grooming them now.

Why would you be ashamed?

antisocial Wednesday, November 5th at 11:53AM EST (link)

Please don’t get into that remorse mode. Voters bought whatever was more appealing to them. Republicans failed to sell their brand of policies. Don’t blame your consumer. Remember free market???

Tell me when was the last time somebody from the GOP leadership defended the war in Iraq? Ask any 10 folks randomly and I bet you will hear the Iraq war was a blunder. When did republicans tie the mortgage meltdown to Jimmy carter and Clintons? Ask any 10 folks randomly and I am willing to bet most will blame President Bush. Do you expect President to defend himself??? Really? If the party can’t defend their President then they deserve to lose(either its indefensible or communication is poor).

And somebody please drive this through… bipartisanship is NOT good. You do whatever is right irrespective of the support. I am tired of this word. Seems more like compromise and backroom deals.
