My Apology to the NRCC and Neil

When I am upset and passionate, well it hurts when a gadfly bites. And I have generally been very upset with what I regard as the general and ubiquitous incompetence shown by most of the National Republican Campaign Committees. You’ll note the new modifier: “most.”

At the Red State gathering in Atlanta Georgia this past weekend just by chance I happened to sit at the table where John Randall was eating lunch. I listened to what he had to say, and since I’m generally anonymous, he didn’t know who I am (not that I’m important enough to know in the first place) or things I might have written at Red State. He talked passionately about beating the Democrats and taking back the House. He spoke knowledgeably about races without notes. Later at his public address he repeated some of those same things and said some things that tell me that he, and the NRCC get it. It looks like Moe just posted a link to his public speech, so I’ll just highlight a few things John said that I like (some may have been during lunch):

  • He wants a Republican majority in the House next year. He doesn’t care if you don’t give to the NRCC as long as you do donate to Republicans in races against Democrats.
  • He thinks the NRCC needs to be an echo chamber for the grassroots, not the other way around.
  • He’ll consider himself to have accomplished one of his key jobs when Nancy Pelosi starts having nightmares about what John Randall at the NRCC is going to do to her today.

As John was rushing off to on Sunday morning, I promised him my first post on RedState would be an apology for my earlier statements. I spent about 45 minutes trying to find the most egregious one I know I have made, but was unable to locate it*, so I’m leaving the apology here. I’m including Neil because he did attempt to defend the NRCC. When we are wrong, it is important to acknowledge that we have been wrong, and then attempt to make restitution for that wrong. And on this count, I was wrong. Ordinarily, this would be followed by me sending my standard $25.00 off to a worthwhile cause, but as I was laid-off last Monday it would be irresponsible for me to do that today. I will commit to doing so after I have again found gainful employment.

And a note to the RNC and the NRSC: Look at what the NRCC is doing, and think about the damage that your actions are having on them. I may have been wrong, but there are still a lot of people out there who feel what I expressed in those earlier posts. And that hurts everybody’s chances at accomplishing what needs to be done in 2010 and 2012.

*I found this one, but there was a thread where Neil said the NRCC was different and I said something along the line of it didn’t matter they were all the same to those of us in the base who were tired of getting shafted. If anyone finds the specific exchange I will link to it and wish I could edit the comment to link to this post.

Most of my reaction to them has been from my memories whan Tom Cole was running them and declaring 2008 a lost cause before we even left the gates.

You make a great point about the NRSC and the RNC dragging down my opinions, and the opinions of many others by their insistence of continuing a losing strategy of pandering to moderates and liberal Republicans…I don’t know if the NRCC is doing that or not but it has been wrong of me to make that assumption based on Cornyn’s actions and the actions of the state parties in Congressional Races…

I wasn’t able to make it to Atlanta…but had I been there…and heard what you did…I’d have made a point of telling them they need to do a better job of communicating what they are doing and how we can help instead of just sending us bogus polling questionnaires and asking for money.

I’m a tither and give a minimum of 10% of my income before I pay a single bill and don’t donate to charities without knowing what they do with the money and that it will be used effectively to accomplish God’s will and the goals I have set in forwarding his cause and I won’t when it comes to political contributions as well…My frustration right now is the constant begging for money with no way to know how it is being spent and what causes are being promoted with it!

and message from the organization. In that sense…some of the slams are justified because their not doing anything to inform anyone about what is being done to stop Pelosi and the Obama Machine!

farstar99 has a good point; the Congressional committee’s changing its behavior because it mucked up in the past few cycles (although they aren’t scared; right now they’re hungry, which is a sentiment that I heartily approve of). But until they had a track record of paying attention, honestly: would you have believed them if they had said that they had changed their behavior?

And I’m not even saying that you’d be wrong to be suspicious.

        • AceInTX

on the flip side…I’ve been so jaded by their behavior over the last couple of cycles that I probably wouldn’t believe them even if they came upo with a message to communicate and did it well…

I’m in show me mode so you are right they need to do first…but a message that we’re not the Dems would be nice to hear once in a while.

    • farstar99

Face it. The criticism was deserved. They were clueless, and hapless, and ineffectual, but NOW they get that we’re angry. They lacked foresight and it cost them.

They’re still mired in the elitist DC mindset, more concerned about which parties they get invited to than what’s best for America, but at least now they’re scared.

They need to be reminded once in a while that they work for us, and if they don’t we’ll fire them and do it ourselves. That’s the price for taking our money.

We’ve been tiptoeing around and apologetic and fearful, because they have controlled the message and the media. They may still control the media, but they can’t hide anymore their real agenda. The word is getting out. I made a comment earlier today on Erick’s blog, regarding the increased scrutiny that Obama would be receiving post election. Many voted for him, though they had reservations; thus there would be closer scrutiny. Obama and his cabal miscalculated what his election meant. And I never believed he had a “mandate.”

Up above, farstar99 says they were “clueless” “hapless” I don’t believe that for a minute. IMO, they have known exactly what they were doing and they intended for these policies to be put in place regardless of outcome. It is about POWER. I hope and pray they underestimated the American people.

have been painting with too broad a brush. I do know that right after the 2008 elections, the RNCC and RNC called for donations, and we told them “not right now” and that “we weren’t too happy with them, after all they did not seem to be doing the right things to make sure that our money wasn’t being wasted.” I have been able to modify my thinking on that because of RedState. Now that I have information, I can make informed decisions and that is what you are doing.

I enjoyed meeting and talking with you at the gathering. You never let on your job situation, but I want you to know that I’ll add you to my prayers.

    Take care, penguin

I love it when a plan comes together.

So glad we had that gathering.

It was a pleasure to meet you at The Gathering. I guess the job loss didn’t come up in our conversations. I know I did mention it to some people there. The first thing my friend whom you also met at the meeting said after he heard about my job loss was “Well I guess you’ll be canceling the trip then?” I told him since the tickets were purchased months before and non-refundable that I’d be making the trip anyway. I did need it. It was energizing and invigorating to be with a bunch passionate conservatives. I’ve been holding the fort here in The People’s Republic of Maryland for so long I’ve sort of become the bitter but determined conservative. And I probably need to be more like you and the other energetic conservatives I met. That was one of the things that impressed me most about Micheal Williams speech. He was so Reaganesque in his upbeat but realistic outlook. I almost wish he wasn’t running for Texas Senator so he could run for President in 2012.

  • The_Gadfly

    Thanks guys.

  • Aaron Gardner

Takes a good person to do a mea culpa like that.

WRT the NRCC and John Randall, I had an opportunity to have a quick chat with him. One thing we discussed was the ability of the donor to target his contributions via the NRCC rather than it only being blanket donations to the organization. We talked about the Young Guns, which allows you to target individuals.

Also I talked to him a bit about the NRSC and how they don’t allow targeted donations. The Senate Conservatives Fund does though.

Anyhow just wanted to share those links and say good diary. Recommend!!

  • Aaron Gardner

So if you don’t wan’t to support some squish but would really like to support some other individual you have that option rather than being limited to supporting the org as a whole or nothing at all.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

The NRCC is supporting candidates through its Young Guns program even though we still have a primary race in front of us. Cory Gardner (CO-4), while an excellent candidate, isn’t the only one running as a Republican for this seat. There is at least one other good candidate running in the primary, and I believe the NRCC should let the voters of CO-4 decide who we want to represent us before they start telling us who we need.

I really don’t see how this is very much different than the NRSC endorsing Crist in Florida. If Gardner wins the primary, then great, I’ll do everything I can to help him get elected, but we still need to wait and see what each of the candidates in this primary race have to offer before we go headlong into the general election.

  • Brian Hibbert

I got to talk with him briefly at the after the after party Saturday night. He is definitely passionate about his job (which he created himself), but what’s more important is that his boss is also passionate about the job.

The NRCC gets it. They may not have money to support candidates in all races (we’ll have to fill in the gaps), but they are at least offering moral support, training and administrative support.

If we can get the message through to Sen. Cornyn that the NRSC also need to be hungry rather than scared, the party will triumph again.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

They’ve said up front that they’re fine with their Young Guns losing.

This is about building the farm team more than picking winners.

In fact there are two Young Guns in the same primary, John Randall said in Atlanta.

If I understand what Aaron says here…it doesn’t sound like this is anything like what the NRSC is doing with Crist.

I like the idea since it would be me…and people on the grass roots who would be picking who advances within the party as opposed to what the NRSC is doing which is taking our money and telling us who is the guy!

Again…it depends on how this is set up and I’m going to be researching this to develop an understanding…using Crist and Rubio as examples…if it’s set up where the grass roots could decide it wants to advance Rubio and dump Crist without having it dictated from the top it sounds like this is exactly what I’ve been agitating for since I came to Red State.

Basically what I’d like to see is for the NRSC, the NRCC, the RNC…etc is for them to become information repositories and funds distribution organizations only….let them become the go to place for folks in Senate District 20, (my home district) to visit and find out who is running in the upcoming primaries, connect to the candidates and find out what they are about and learn who they are, and provide a place for activists in Senate District 20 to have their resources pooled and distributed to the candidate of our choice.

My gripe is having them say…before all the candidates have even filed, or before anyone has made a single speech laying out what they believe and what they will do in office…having the national apparatus declare their choice and freeze out a better candidate who would garner more grass roots support!

Maybe this is a way to fix that gripe?

  • penguin2

hungry vs. scared” I hadn’t thought about it that way. Kind of the NRSC is reacting instead of acting, that is never as productive. I agree the NRCC seems to be getting it and it has been heartening to see them adjust and modify and call out their own when they think they are in the wrong.

BTW, I meant to tell you in your own diary (cash-clunkers) how much I enjoyed meeting and talking with you. I had written my unintended consequences remark so fast and posted, it got away from me. I look forward to your future writings.

when there are other good candidates in the primary. Sure, you can target giving to the “Young Gun”, but what if another candidate is better? You’d have no way of even knowing there was another good, conservative candidate in that race, and may actually be working against what local conservatives are trying to do.

if so…then it’s more of the same IMHO

I fell so sorry for you. I really feel sorry that you have to deal with Van De Puette. I’m happy that only thing my parents have to worry about is Ciro Rodriguez(mean dude when he loses). So I see you have on of the Castro brothers for a State Rep.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

I have a problem with it. I don’t like some group in Washington telling me who should represent the Party for the general election in the district in which I live. I believe that’s for the Republican voters in the district to decide.

If you want them to decide for you, then I guess you don’t have a problem here.

We need a way to inform Grass Roots Conservatives who the choices are, give a bio and a place for prospective candidates to voice their positions, and collect the money to be distributed as the giver directs…anything else is a game and a way for the establishment to look like they are serving us while they are in fact ruling us!

The proper time for the NRCC to get involved is during the general election, not the pimary. They can then help direct funds to vulnerable districts where we have a chance to retake a seat.
