The New, New Shiny Object

Ok Folks, before everyone loses their head over Obama’s new position regarding gay marriage, I think it’s important that we take a deep breath and really consider what’s going on here.

First, obviously Biden’s recent gaffe wasn’t a gaffe at all but a planned event, to test the waters before Obama reversed course. And we all know that reversing course is being kind – someone like Obama hasn’t the principles to feel one way or another about the topic of traditional marriage. He’s really just a reflection of whatever ideal he feels he needs to emulate in order to win re-election. So when someone is so blatantly fake, should we really get worked up over what they have to say on anything?

The fact is, the reason this is happening in two-fold: Obama sees the poll numbers and is trying to shore up the vote of every victim group he can. Gays just happen to be the low hanging fruit of the day, having been disappointed with him for quite some time. However, there is a second reason why this is happening – the shiny object.

Remember the whole contraception debate? The resulting “war on women?” Etc, etc ad nauseum? See, Obama simply cannot win on his record. He can only win by somehow getting people to stop looking at his record, and hopefully focus on the potential shortcomings of the alternative. During contraception-gate, that was the whole point – instead of focusing on Obama’s failures, we gave the media 2-3 weeks worth of coverage on a non-issue. And at the end of the day, for all of our outrage, nothing changed except that we gave the DNC yet another talking point against us and hurt Rush Limbaugh in the process.

That’s what this is about. Obama wants us to take the bait, so then the media can harp for the next two or three weeks about homosexual intolerance. Pleas will be made that “something must be done” and look at how backwards the enlightened Obama’s opponent happens to be. And btw, if you doubt me on this, just consider that Obama’s already started this with his comment that he’s “evolved,” meaning, by extension, that anyone who doesn’t agree with him is somehow un-evolved.

I would advise all of my fellow countrymen to tread very carefully. This is a trap, and we mustn’t take the bait. Let’s not win a war on Gay marriage, and lose the election in November. The focus needs to be on the economy. If Obama wants to change his view on gay marriage, that’s fine. He won’t get the votes to pass any legislation on this in any case. We can’t get bogged down into spurious discussions around social conservative issues when Americans care about one thing, and one thing only, the economy.

Total disclosure here – I’m all for gays being treated equally, but against the idea of government defining marriage. Marriage is a religious institution, and as a result out of the purview of the government. I’d support civil unions for everyone to make things equal, and allow people to go to a church, synagogue, or other house of worship in order to get traditionally married.

Unless both houses of Congress vote to legalize homosexual marriage and put the bill on his desk to sign, who cares what he thinks?

So he puts the EPA and the rest of the Obama Politburo Czars on the case and they regulate coal out of existence.

Technically he has no power, but the bureaucracy that we have allowed to evolve in Washington has a direction from the President. If the bureaucracy regulates (through incentives such as cutting off funding to schools, or police, etc) they can punish people into submission and achieve the desired results by default,

The good news is he also “champions states rights to choose” and many in the Progressive movement consider that a huge step backward.

They seem to be able to change the laws of the land by applying different “interpretations” tot hem when they write rulings. It’s not a good development for representative democracy going forward.

win my prize for “Thing I’ll remember, the rest of this week…”

Don’t know what to give you ,but I’ll come up with sumthin’…..

This Diarist seems to be a mind reader, with a very long reception radius….. I’vre been repeating this scenario to all who will actually listen, and surprisingly I find quite a few that really do not even consider it.
Given Barry’s past and his [presidential] recent history ,I find this repeated occurance really troubling.
What ever happened to Objectivity, or comparative examination?

Have I finally become my grandfather in outlook, and temperment?
          Looks Like it…..

I restate (on Redstate) – let’s not take the bait. This is a transparent ploy for votes. I suppose this is what O meant when he said he’d be transparent.

I think it’s entirely possible that Obama was perfectly happy keeping his views hidden until after the election and Biden went off course (or perhaps was looking at a potential run of his own in ’16 which he has said he hasn’t ruled out) but given what happen Obama and his team figured that there would be more harm done at this point denying it then there would be coming out for it. But either way you’re right – it’s a shiny object, one he doesn’t have much power over anyhow, and we’d be fools to run into this trap.

Unfortunately I’m not convinced the GOP won’t run right into it.

  • theobnoxiousamerican

I’ll concede that I may be giving the Obama campaign too much credit here. I really do hope that the GOP is smarter than this.

Romney’s talking about it now, so let’s see how he handles it.

In the media world we live in we have to talk about /something/ and right now that something is SSM which is a distraction for sure but as long as it doesn’t get legs, which it shouldn’t, there won’t be a problem. The MSM + White house are throwing things against a wall to see what sticks in attempt to find anything that resonates and things that don’t work, they will abandon, but eventually they might find something that resonates. Think John Kerry and windsurfing. None of their attempts to pull Romney offsides has worked so far but they will keep trying. And I can’t wait to see all the BS stories that come out in October. You think this non-story ab Romney ‘bullying’ people in 1965 is the best story they have in the can? That is a ‘May’ story, like an appetizer. No they save the big ‘McCain is having an affair with a lobbyist’ stories for October.

  • theobnoxiousamerican

From what I saw on Fox news, he sheepishly responded that he believed in traditional marriage. Failed to make the point that Obama is merely trying to take the focus off his failed presidency. Not good – and I endorse Romney.

This could be another attempt to deflect from Obama’s record and the economy. It was clearly an effort to pander to the hard-left.

But do not be too worried about Conservatives falling into the trap. I say this as someone who is a staunch social and fiscal conservative. It is not as if we were all shocked that he held this position (maybe a little shocked that he chose before the election to do it).

Most have met his statement with sarcastic derision, which is good. I personally think it was one of the biggest blunders he could have made. It smacks of desperation and a willingness to throw more socially-conservative Democrat voting blocks under the bus (Latinos and African-Americans) without scruple.

Just wait, the word “evolving” will become a new buzz word for smarmy political speak and once again Obama will look like the hack that he is.

Islam is very clear on same sex relations, it is a capital offense. No society government that embraces same sex relations, let alone officially sanctions marriage can co-exist peacefully with Islamic Imperialists.

So, the next time the democrats say the reason “they” attacked us is because we are over there, the answer is, no, it is because embracing same sex relations is forbidden in the Koran and requires that true Muslims eradicate the abomination (in their eyes),

Obama may have made this country signficantly less secure, and made relations with some of our biggest oil suppliers more complicated. He may have handed Iran the action they needed to persuade fellow Muslim states that their differences are less then the evil of America.
