The polling you cited is crap. At this point those polls measure name recognition and nothing else.

      the primaries/caucuses or the most.

when you insisted over and over that Obama couldn’t possibly be elected, huh.

I was arguing against history (given the difficulty and rarity of three consecutive terms for the same party, esp given the economy). Plus, my 2008 arguments, couched in prognostication form, were mainly for the purpose of fighting against defeatism and aimed at maximizing GOP turnout, but yes, I was wrong in 2008. Its easy not be wrong if all one does is read polls.

But in 2012, history does compel me to say that it is certain that Obama will lose, given the state of the economy and many other factors, so I will put my rep on the line and say that the GOP nominee will win in 2012.

BTW, one of my best predictions ever was that Huck would not win the 2008 nomination, AND that he would get a FNC TV show! Seriously, its in writing. Admittedly, if one makes enough predictions, one tends to get some right…see stopped clock twice a day.

But what of the Newt to place prediction? Makes me sound like a pretty sophisticated horse race gambler, eh? Preakness odds to come…

for column deadline manipulation…especially around New Years…its a complicated but well documented story. I am also a big fan of Richard Chamberlin as the Portugese explorer in Sho-gun!

Although I know it’s risky to bet against Cockstradamus, I don’t see Iowa corn farmers who haven’t seen much of Newt recently coming out strong for him.

The ones who remember him from the Contract days will remember that he left D.C. under a dark cloud. The ones who have only heard of him since are more likely to know him as the guy who screwed up NY-23 or the guy on a global warming couch with Pelosi.

Newt’s a smart guy, not denying the brain power, but I don’t see how he can turn Iowans into his corner, especially if Daniels – who is just across the Illinois corn fields from Iowa – decides to get competitive.

totals when all is said and done. I think his debating skills gets him in second. Not first.

I think Iowa will be Cain’s to lose given his so-con cred and SC debate cred. Are Iowans gonna get past the Daniels’ truce? I doubt it. Plus, is he gonna run and expose himself to the anal exam of his drug charges from way back? Will Condi stand by the Bushite in the Hawkeye Cauci?

And btw, do we know where Cain, Newt, Paws, Mitt and Newt stand on ethanol subsidies?

          • acat

He appears to be for it.

Not surprising, Minnesota has a good bit of agriculture.

Or, if your tin foil hat is firmly in place, only until ADM stops blocking research on ethanol from grass clippings…

If the boffins can ever get it to work, food – in the form of corn, for example – becomes a by-product.

anything else we can think of that will produce energy, jobs, and make a buck for the investors.

The part about ethanol that pisses me off isn’t the idea of putting food in the gas tank, it’s the idea of tax dollars subsidizing* it. If it were sufficiently profitable, it wouldn’t *need* subsidies.

            Mew

            * as in government-checks subsidy, not as in tax-break subsidy….

for national security research reasons (eg Manhattan projects etc) and/or for the high start-up costs of power plants.

I think I was projecting the notion that Newt is still more of the man that led us to the House after 40 yrs in the wilderness than the beltway creature he became and that he would do well and come in 2nd in delegates after all primaries and cauci…but what do you guys think. Does Newt’s move to the left make it more likely that he does well in NH and beyond? I hope he is toast like I think Mitt is.

          • acat

All that Newt’s move to the left does is to make New Hampshire a tad more competitive for Daniels and Romney.

I view it as a good thing, I think. It doesn’t hurt any of the actual conservatives in the race – provided Daniels can also place or show in Iowa, of course – and it does remove the “mandate” that used to be issued to the winner of New Hampshire and/or Iowa.

A longer primary is only a problem for the GOP if the candidates start taking shots at one another instead of at Obama….

He’s been trying to out-crazy the crazies for a couple of years now on television, and has tried to play up cultural differences, which will just draw attention to his less-than-stellar personal life.

Now, he just ruined the credibility that he had with FiCons as a wonky reducer of government by attacking the much better wonky reducer of government and defending the mandate.

It was just a matter of time before his mouth got him in trouble. Amazing though that it happened so quickly after Huck’s announcement. this is rapidly shaping up for Iowa to decide between TPaw and Daniels, which one advances to the next round.

Is the VV some sort of variation on Fred Sanford’s Ripple and Champagne combo he calls Champipple?

My favorite ObamaRecession era beer brand is Cold & Cheap.

Vinho Verde is from Minho, a region in northern Portugal. Bacalhau’s dishes are found in continental Portugal, not so much in the islands.

The obligatory dishes in Azorean gastronomy are the cozido das furnas, a dish cooked underground with natural volcano heat; grilled fresh fish and red meat and the spectacular shell-fish cuisine: grilled lapas, cracas and cavacos. The fishing of the later is illegal during the current season and for most of the year due to environmentalist pressures – the species is on the verge of extinction, so… hurry up and find a restaurant that serves them illegally.

it was a throw away line. I saw Anthony Bourdain in the Azores, and I don’t even like Vinho Verde.

is the reason we all so easily get into the Presidential horse-race so early (which, btw is an American tradition going back to at least the Jacksonian era for the average person…I have proof!) because it is so much simpler and devoid of accountability re logic and reason as opposed to issues?

I hate it because it seems to me that we spend way too much time focusing on what we might do after next elections than putting pressure on those elected to actually solve problems in the present.

    I seek meowing wisdom….and you too Becker…smile

I’ve said for years that politics is my sport, elections are my superbowl. Used to be I’d claim the best seat in front of the tube on election night… now, I just check online.

Handicapping the races are the fun part of it, and since it’s a Saturday evening, why not chat about Huck’s alleged news?

As long as, at some point, we start getting serious about the work aspect….

When he asked people to pray for him to hear the “still small voice of the Holy Spirit”, I knew he was out. I’m not being sarcastic either. As a Baptist minister, he is obligated to follow God’s will, not that of those who wanted him to run for President.
