Michele Bachmann’s “Moneybomb”

Stealing a page from Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann launched a 24-hour moneybomb today with a modest goal of $240,000.  At this point, however, its beginning to look like her bomb may turn out to be a dud.  As of 7 p.m. EDT, Bachmann had only raised $86,941.  This is only about 35% of her goal almost halfway through the fundraising 24 hour period.  Earlier in the day, she had ads up on the internet, including RedState, which seem to have been taken down.

Even if she were to reach her goal, that pales in comparison to the $1 million moneybomb dropped by Ron Paul with 24 hours of the first debate, and the $10.3 million raised by Mitt Romney in a 24 hour period last week.  Even Tim Pawlenty raised almost $2 million in house party events accompanying the announcement of his candidacy.  By attempting a moneybomb, Bachmann runs a serious risk by publicly demonstrating over the internet her fund-raising ability/inability which is previously untested as a potential Presidential candidate.  If she fails in this effort, or barely succeeds, it will be a major set back to her candidacy.

Don’t be mislead by the Bachmann money bomb ad that may appear from time to time as the header of Red State. The dollar amount is a simulation and not the real figures that have been donated. Highly misleading.

I like her, do not think she will get in, and even if she does stands little chance at success unless she gets on the ball, but with that being said………

She has raised more in the first quarter than anyone, Romney included and even leads Obama in small donors.

Moneybombs work sometimes and sometimes they do not. Not much of a big deal if she comes up short at this point since they seem to be much more successful in the heat of battle, not in such an early time as this.

Now on to the Ron Paul/Mitt Romney comparison, not the same thing. These are two guys who have previously ran for president and have a core group of supporters who do as their masters tell them. But it is telling that their overall fundraising has fallen short of the relatively unknown Bachmann.

      • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

It matters how much you raise and whether you can set goals and meet them. More importantly, perception matters. The first quarter is now old news. Second quarter is 2/3rds gone.

        • powertothepeople

of things you know nothing about. I will leave it at that. If you feel you are right and that a failure to achieve a moneybomb would kill her campaign right after she was the biggest money maker in the game and right after she achieved the 4th highest donor record in house history and right after……………then by all means consider yourself the political expert.

But you are wrong on this and badly.

          • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

correctly that Huckabee would announce he was not going to run at the same time Erickson was predicting that he would run. I’m not saying it kills her campaign, just raises serious questions about judgment and fund-raising ability.

          • powertothepeople

a ton of people on here were saying he would not run, myself included along with Beck, aesthete, and many others. Why are we not bragging you ask? Because just like you we were simply on the right side of a 50/50 chance. In fact I would say we had better odds considering Huck skipped the SC debates, a state he badly needed had he ran. Not that impressed with your guess or mine.

But back to the subject, if you are questioning her judgement, I would agree. Money Bombs work, but not in this type of situation. Way too early, way too many people undecided, and no contest at hand. So yes her judgement is and was off pulling a money bomb right now. But as to her fund raising abilities, you are way off and not even close to be accurate. She is a known powerhouse when it comes to raising money. She has been for around 2 years now. As I stated above, she outpaced everyone last quarter, has outpaced even Obama on number of small donors and amount, and placed 4th all time in the house in fund raising. She is still opening checks daily and when she files her report for this quarter, I expect her to be in the lead or very close. This dumb move does not reflect on her overall fund raising ability or the actual amount of funds she is raising. Nor does it in any way reflect on her political ambitions. She may not run, I do not expect her to run, but this stupid moment has nothing to do with it.

        • powertothepeople

thanks for letting me know the first quarter is over and where we are in the second. Funny, they do not report cash on hand and donor records to the completion. Considering she has led nearly everyone for over 2 years now, really do not expect that to change much.

At 9 p.m. EDT, Bachmann’s moneybomb had only generated contributions in the amount of $108,240. She is in serious danger of having a bust in this fund-raising attempt.

and, historically, only tepid successes in primaries, no?

She should announce first, and forestall any questions about her fundraising accumen which might otherwise taint the announcement.

It’s 10 p.m. on the East Coast and Bachmann has raised only $112,620. During the past hour, she only banked $4,380. Bachmann supporters had better pick up the pace or this moneybomb is going to blow up in her face.

  • http://www.usdebateboard.com usdebateboard

unlesss you are in a general with nationwide ramifications. Christine O’Donnell and Scott Brown come to mind.

Why take a chance and blemish your announcement with something like this?

  • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

Bachmann’s total is now $131,902. During the past hour, she raised almost $20,000, her best hour today. Could it be that the West Coast is Bachmann Country?

  • Goldwater_Conservative

and if she cant get traction in iowa she is done. But I dont see her problem as being a fund raiser. She is high energy and excites the base, that should translate into good money once she gets going.

The Dallas Mavericks are going to the NBA Finals. Oklahoma just couldn’t get the job done during the last 5 minutes of either Game 4 or Game 5. Meanwhile, Michele Bachmann’s moneybomb seems to be running out of steam. During the last hour, she only raised $1,879 . Her total is now $133,791. It is becoming increasingly difficult to see her meeting the very modest goal of $240,000. This will be a major blow to her Presidential aspirations. She has a reputation as an outstanding fund-raiser–for a member of Congress. But can she play with the Big Boys?

Paper filters remove all the essential oils from coffee. There are very few Ford Pintos on the road anymore. Another cold front just went through. The Detroit Lions might have a winning season.

I hope someone will be addressing THESE fascinating points, as well, in some future diary entries. And the point of your diary and play-by-play is what, exactly? That Ron Paul is more likely to be elected President than Michele Bachmann? That, and a $1 bill will buy you a McChicken at McDonald’s. Ron Paul raised millions last go ’round, and yet got what, 12 votes?

This news is about as indicative of future events as, well, as the news of my favorite color. And, I don’t like to point out that the odds in your predictive acumen vis-a-vis the the Huckmaster were 50-50. But, enjoy and have fun, in spite of old Curmudgeons like me.

Woke up this morning to see that Michele’s numbers had barely moved during the night. At 6:30 a.m., she is at $135,918. The campaign only picked up a coupla grand overnight.. Time is running out. All you Bachmann fans need to get out your checkbooks or your candidate is going to look seriously inept. Can you say, “Lexington and Concord”.

  • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

Michele Bachmann has fallen significantly short of her very modest goal of raising $240,000 in 24 hours. She raised only $164,647–over $75,000 less than the targeted amount, although she continues to accept donations at the web-site.

She has also postponed any announcement regarding her Presidential candidacy until the original June deadline. She had earlier moved that deadline up to the month of May. Perhaps she is rethinking running for President in the light of this meager performance.

    • YnotNOW

Because I do want to encourage her to run for President, and split the conservative vote. Bachman is a “niche” candidate without broad enough support to win in the General, probably not even in the Primary. But would water down the conservative vote for other candidates, paving the way for Romney. ugg.

I support Bachman in the House. or possibly in a Senate run (DeMint could use her fire and assistance there). but not for Pres at this time.

  • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

It’s noon on the second day, and Bachmann is still trying to raise $240,000, but not in 24 hours as originally announced. She has announced changed her message on the web-site to say that there are “only a couple of hours left”.. The message is also more overtly aimed at raising funds for Bachmann’s Presidential bid instead of just “making sure that Obama is a one term President.” She is at $225,000 and will obviously continue to accept donations until she meets her goal regardless of how long it takes.

    • Hooah_Mac

Seriously, sit back and think – how many hours have you devoted to tracking and commenting on this money bomb thing. Obsessed is a word that comes to mind.
Fact is, she raised the money, maybe in 28 or 30 hours instead of 24, but it is still pretty impressive for someone who has NOT made a decision to run for President, has limited name recognition at this point, had her thunder stolen by the other prolife candidate from Minnesota, and with the lag in reporting and the money that wouldn’t have been donated online, she did rather well. Michele is my congresswoman, and truth be told, is my favorite on the list of people who could be on the ballot at the Presidential level in 2012.
I know conventional wisdom says she can’t do it, but conventional wisdom would say that Bill Clinton’s candidacy was sunk when the rumors of his infidelity surfaced in 1992, conventional wisdom said that John McCain would run away with the nomination in 2000, and conventional wisdom would have assured us that a man who had never won an actual contested election, had no executive experience, and no ability at anything in life other than reading a teleprompter could be President.
I would love to see her run and win, but I would be happy if she instead runs for Senate against Klobuchar or continues to be one of the loudest conservative voices in the House. I know this for certain – any money given to her WILL be used effectively to counter Obama and is policies.

raise a few more dollars. Who knows?

Of course, I could have let it disappear off the listings last night. at 8 p.m. There is a method in my obsession. Anyway do you actually watch sporting events or just read the results in the newspaper?

Michelle was my favorite. This bomb certainly bombed and it hurts. I’m thinking it will be Romney who will get the nomination. I can live with that but he needs to start being inspirational. Can he do it?

    • 20jan2013

I’m not too worried about Michele. She has yet to announce. I’ll donate when she announces.

If Romney sneaks in solely because the conservatyive anti-establishment vote got fractured, there will be civil war within the Republican Party.
