Rick Perry in Orangeburg, SC

I just left a Rick Perry event at Duke’s Barbecue in Orangeburg, SC.  It gave me great hope that Gov. Perry may indeed be able to pull off a comeback in the South Carolina Republican primary.  The speech that he gave was positive, but serious, focusing on economic issues primarily.  He did begin with his personal biography, which serves not only to introduce him to those who only know that he is Texas governor, but also plays well in small town and rural South Carolina where cotton is still King.  He ended with a reference to South Carolina native, William Travis, the commander at the Alamo.

Perry was introduced by Katon Dawson, former SC GOP State Chairman, who is chairing Perry’s South Carolina campaign.  Perry could not have a more formidable and knowledgeable ally.  Dawson knows how to win elections in South Carolina.  Dawson began by asking how many of the people present knew someone who was unemployed, looking for work and able to work.  Almost every hand was raised.  South Carolina has been hit hard by the loss of jobs and that fact plays into Perry’s strong suit.

I counted over 100 people at this event and didn’t include late-comers.  That included a small contingent of press and Perry staff, but almost all were locals that had come to meet Perry.  Orangeburg does not usually see Republican candidates for President.  The owner of Duke’s had told me that this hadn’t happened in 50 years .  The reason is not just size, but Orangeburg is the home of Congressman Jim Clyburn, the Democrats Assistant Minority Leader.  But unlike the other campaigns that are only scheduling the large population centers–Columbia, Greenville, Spartanburg, Charleston and Myrtle Beach, Perry is barnstorming the state with 4 or 5 events each day.

Finally, despite all of the focus in the media, Perry did not even mention any of his opponents by name, nor did he attack any of them.  Instead he focused his attention on the failed policies of Obama and the need to elect a “Washington outsider as with Executive experience” as President.  The first post-New Hampshire poll in South Carolina suggests that Romney is falling, Huntsman got a New Hampshire bump, Santorum is stalling out, and Gingrich is a close 2nd to Romney.  There is, however, a large group of undecided voters as well as those who could change their minds.  There is still a window of opportunity for Rick Perry to revive his Presidential campaign and pull off an upset.

Other than Palin, what other major endorsement is plausible and can actually get him the second look Perry needs??? It is possible….

but the fact that she went to bat for Perry on the Mitt Hannity show last night was a biggie. I guess she can now also be put in the enemy un-American non-capitalist loving camp. Didn’t see the segment, but would love to have seen Mitt Hannity’s face when she was speaking.

      • flgal208

he was getting so frustrated, even pulled out a paper so he could read word for word what Perry said and she would not take the bait—don’t think she did it for Perry, but more for Newt—it can’t be ok for Newt to go after Bain and not Perry (Todd endorsed Newt), so she might have been sticking up for Perry to not come across as a hypocrite if/when she endorses Newt, but also I think because she doe NOT like Willard. BTW–there is a clip on youtube, not of Hannity, but just want she said—think it’s titled palin wants romney to proove he created a 100,000 jobs or else it was she wants him to show his tax returns…one or the other

      GO PERRY

His endorsement would mean more in South Carolina than anyone else, even Sarah Palin. I doubt Scott will endorse anyone, but he was originally recruited to the Party by Katon Dawson, Perry’s campaign manager, Dawson could pull that off, if anyone can.

As for Hannity, I did see Palin sticking up repeatedly for Perry and refusing to take the bait. My wife and I were cheering her on. I have almost stopped watching O’Reilly, Hannity and Sustern because they are so in the tank for other candidates–O’Reilly and Hannity for Mitt, and Greta for Santorum. Can’t believe Hannity has sold out so easilly. He was obviously pulling for Newt until the Bain stuff hit the fan. Also Laura Ingraham has become a sell out too. This is exactly why we lose elections. There were six–count them, six–candidates competing in South Carolina four years ago, but the conservative establishment sold out to McCain after New Hampshire. I’m just hoping we don’t repeat past history.

To set the record straight–What Perry is specifically saying is that Bain capital bankrupted two plants, one in Gaffney SC and one in Georgetown SC, and while Bain and Romney were making money of these bankruptcies, people who worked for those plants lost their jobs and those communities were devastated. It’s just the truth and it resonates in South Carolina, where we have lost so many manufacturing jobs.

between Palin and Perry. Both big state governors with oil and the independent streak in common.

I don’t think Palin will risk her capital until Governor Perry comes up in the polls but it sure would be a shot on the arm for Perry.

      Governor Palin,

Rick Perry is the real deal. He is the last TEA Party candidate left in this race.

      Please endorse him.

I completely agree with you. For me Perry is the only true conservative standing.

That there was already a Perry organization in FL doing outreach.

Best I can offer is to email Jose Romano above and also sign up on the campaign website, be vigilant and get plugged in.

If you know activists in the area; email them, contact them thru facebook, whatever you can to get in contact with local campaign organizers. I am certain there are some there.

Perry is ahead on the top poll, but the bottom poll doesn’t even have his name on it to choose from!!! Another faux Faux poll … they are awful!!!!

  • http://www.changeforrickperry.org louisianapatriette

here’s a precious video of Perry and those two darling little girls. They drew him pictures and you can tell he’s giving them his undivided attention.

Golly, I hope this embed works…it wasn’t on Youtube.

    • pttx333

you just see him with grandbabies in the White House? Woo Hoo! That great home will be back to normal then!!!!

      • http://www.changeforrickperry.org louisianapatriette

Those two little girls remind me SO MUCH of my two youngest sisters, (Lil’ Sis [just turned 5] and Baby Sis [2 years]). They’d be all over him if they could get a chance, showering him with “huggies and kissies,” as Lil’ Sis says. I don’t think they’d be shy, not one bit: they’d probably both talk their heads off telling him all about their (very) eventful lives–even Baby Sis, who’s growing out of her baby talk.

Can I tell you something? I really like Governor Perry. Shocker! (LOL) And I’m not even talking politically–I mean that I really and truly admire him as a person. Shocker again, but let me explain…Even if things don’t go the way I’d like them to go, I know that he’s my brother in the Lord and God is working all things for his good! And I truly don’t want anything less than God’s best for him because I really really like him, almost as though he were a good and old friend.

I’ve learned a lot since June when I started reading about Governor Perry. I’ve learned a lot about human nature, politics, the world outside Louisiana. It’s not all pretty. But I’ve seen where God is working and using people like Governor Perry, and I look forward to seeing how God uses him in the next four years, whether in the White House or in Austin. I know one thing: I’ve got a real-life American hero to follow!

        • pttx333

hero either! There have been very few heroes in the past few decades … I was lucky as a little girl to have Roy Rogers, John Wayne and the other good guys … Gregory Peck as a teen/young woman, and so on. They all had good characters and wore white hats (so to speak) … not so today with the decadence you see in HahaWood. Yep, he just makes you feel that way … like you’re wearing comfy houseshoes and could tell him your life’s story without blushing cuz he would understand!

Oh, those babies! They are gone too soon … love ‘em while you can. Remember that always.

        • romansdaughter

I know why I like you so much…LOL..great minds think a like. Somehow Rick Perry has become my friend and I have never even met him. He and Anita are just such down to earth people. I have been praying mightily and just like you I feel the Lord is going to use him mightily if not as President, then there in Texas. All I can say is that the rest of us who are not from Texas are the ones that are going to be losing. Right now I fear for our country but I know that God is in control!

          • http://www.changeforrickperry.org louisianapatriette

Yes, the Lord is in control of ALL things, and if we really and truly love Governor Perry as a friend, then we want his life to be blessed abundantly.

It’s definitely a win-win situation for the Texans, but look on the bright side: IF Perry doesn’t get the nomination and IF Obama gets 4 more years, then we’ll still have a great and tenacious ally in Governor Perry. That’s a GOOD thing because we’ll need someone to lead the way. I’ll be the first cheering him on, because I have no doubt he’ll give Obama a harder time than he’s already done for the past 4 years!

During a radio interview this morning, he was asked which federal departments he would shut down. Perry listed: ‘Three right off the bat: Commerce, Interior, and Energy are the three that you think of.’ Problem: Those are NOT the three he had previously not been able to name. He swapped Interior for Education. He has not previously said he would eliminate Interior…A Perry spokesman tried to clean up later: “Every agency is on the chopping block.”

It is hard to describe how interesting and fun it is to attend events like this, so I am glad you took the opportunity to do so. Also putting in the background of why having the event in your area was very interesting.

I hope and pray that the grassroots-level campaign that Perry is waging will reap real benefits in the primary.

I was most excited by this note that you included:

But unlike the other campaigns that are only scheduling the large population centers

    • Aaron Gardner

I suppose you can look back and justify it because you were just trying to help out exemplar of conservatism Herman Cain.

And yeah, that little post of yours was used by others in the blogosphere like Michelle Malkin to paint Perry as the devil. So, well played.

      • BA Cyclone

The thrust of my original argument was valid in June. And as such Rick Perry quickly apologized for that mistake on like Day One of his formal presidential campaign.

As such, there is an update reflecting that at the end of my June post.

Consequently as the field shook out, I actually endorsed, worked for, and was prepared to speak for Perry at my caucus…and would have if not for a Perry Strike Force member being present.

My pebble into the pond had relatively nothing to do with Perry’s implosion more than his open stumbling in the bright spotlights on stage. As I worked for his campaign, I heard maybe one person mention Gardasil, and a frustrating number mention American-Idol-level character judgements of “he doesn’t have what it takes” to be President. That is what frustrates me most about average voters today.

But yeah, looking back then, I never expected to be the one actively working on the Perry campaign. Funny how the rock rolls sometimes.
