“April is the cruelest month.” T.S. Eliot

Louisiana may have been Rick Santorum’s last hurrah, except for his home state of Pennsylvania.  The April primary looks very good for Mitt Romney.  And we are now into the “winner take all” stage of delegate selection.  Wisconsin, Maryland, and D.C. are April 3.  Three weeks later, primaries are held in New York, Connecticutt, Rhode Island, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.  The polls and pundits all suggest that Romney will win all but Pennsylvania, and that he has a good chance of defeating Santorum there and sweeping the table.  In the process, he will collect a bucket load of delegates, although technically not enough to clinch the nomination.  Santorum would be wise to recognize the obvious and concede now, rather than running up a huge campaign debt.

That is, if Romney can get to 1300 delegates, he can cut a deal with Ron Paul for the difference he needs to clinch before the convention …

Just as Nixon cut a deal with Rockefeller back in ’68 …

and Romney can continue his run for 1600. 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, that is.

You only need 1144 delegates to win the nomination, acat. Romney has 565 (according to Real Clear Politics). He should pick up another 240 – 250 in April even without Pennsylvania. Winning Oregon, California, New Jersey and Utah in May and June nets another 290. He should pick up another 30 – 50 at least from the 155 delegates awarded proportionally in Texas. That’s not counting the other states that vote in May and June. He should easily get to the magic number, although maybe not technically until the California or even Utah primaries. But you are right that if he needs to he will cut a deal with Ron Paul.

        Please consider the observation modified.

If Romney can reach 1000, Ron Paul is already at 95 and can be assumed to pick up a few more, and a deal will be made.

My personal money is on Rand Paul replacing either Tim Geitner or Ben Bernanke…
