MEMBER DIARY

Does Marco Rubio now have the inside track for the VP nomination?

Yesterday afternoon, Mitt Romney took the unusual step of taking to the stage to announce that the ABC News story that Marco Rubio was not being considered for the VP nomination was “false” and that Rubio was “being thoroughly vetted” for the nomination.  This after refusing earlier in the day in an interview with Sean Hannity to comment on the story, except to say that only he and Beth Myers knew who was being vetted and that “Beth Myers isn’t talking.”  But now Romney is talking.

There are other clear signs.  Rubio’s autobiography was rushed to press and released yesterday, after a previously announced October publication date.  Nothing says “I’m a candidate” like a book release.  Rubio also has altered his previously declaration that “I’m not going to be the Vice President” to “I’m not going to comment on the process”.  Finally, in light of Obama’s reversal of course in announcing last week a change in immigration policy that effectively provides temporary amnesty for the children of illegal immigrants, Rubio announced that he would no longer pursue introduction of legislation that would provide a variation of the Dream Act.  His proposal had draw considerable fire from conservatives.

Romney, for his part, took his lead from Rubio in his response to Obama’s new immigration position.  Romney’s statement was almost verbatim Rubio’s earlier response, including that this would make it harder to enact permanent legislation.

Obama clearly fears Rubio the most among those being considered by Romney.   That is the only explanation for why he stepped on his own message one day after giving what was billed as a “major speech on the economy” to announce the change in immigration policy.  He clearly wanted to sabotage Rubio’s efforts to put together a coalition of Democrats and Republicans to enact a permanent solution.  Obama is also depending heavily of Hispanic votes in Colorado, Nevada, and Florida, three swing states that are critical to his reelection chances.  His calculation, however, may have been a miscalculation since it may have actually pushed Romney closer to choosing Rubio and since it got Rubio off the hook on this issue until after the election.

Yes, there are those (primarily the mainstream media and Republican insiders) who want Bush to choose a “boring white guy” for his Veep.  Portman, McDonnell and Pawlenty are the three most likely suspects with Portman getting the most chatter.  We’ve all heard the arguments in favor of this approach.  But Marco Rubio may now have the inside track.  However, don’t expect a decision any time soon.

Yes, this puts Rubio in play.

Last week Obama tried out the Chavez wing of his government and granted amnesty via presidential fiat. While the various positions are popular among ordinary Americans, the abuse of proceedure should not be.

Rubio can bring that argument to Latinos better than anyone, while at the same time exciting the base, and providing a true Conservative, who is not a “boring white guy.” The fact is, that Romney will not win this election with 20 percent of the Latino vote. He knows that, and so does Obama. Only the charisma of a Rubio can bring him more to the center in the immigration war, and bring him up to the 35% Latino vote that most experts say Romney needs in order to win.

I know, I know, Romney doesn’t like risk, and Romney doesn’t want anyone who might have more star wattage than the candidate, but the VP will need to be a tail gunner for the candidate, and Rubio has shown he can do that, and a Romney lite candidate will only make Romney a safe loser.

He has a superb command of a broad range of issues and is an excellent speaker, He is quick on his feet in responding to questions. His appeal to voters is broad-based. Yes, he should help turn out the Cuban-American vote in Florida, and could provide the margin of victory Romney needs in that critical state. In Nevada and Colorado, where the Hispanic vote is primarily Mexican-American, he may or may not help the ticket, but those states are not crucial to a Romney win. More importantly, I believe that more than any of the other possible VP nominees, Rubio will appeal to white working class voters (male and female) in the other toss up states. And I can’t wait for him to debate Biden.

I just wish that people would realize that Rubio IS NO ADVOCATING AMNESTY…IT IS GO TO THE BACK OF THE LINE…LIKE EVERY OTHER IMMIGRANT APPLYING FOR CITIZENS. Sorry to shout…but nobody is hearing me.

Yes. Of course Rubio is more than Hispanic.

Rubio is a tea party conservative. He will bring that kind of excitement to the party, regardless of race or heritage.

Rubio is charismatic. He absolutely has a gift for making complex positions easy to digest. He also has terrific political sensibilities. I think he will be a terrific tail gunner for Romney during the campaign.

Rubio is from Florida, and Florida is a swing state. He can be the difference in swinging 28 electoral votes from blue to red.

Rubio is young. He is the future of our party and at the same time proves our party has a future.

Rubio is a counter-balance to Romney. In the event of an election victory, Rubio will be a very valuable member of a Romney Administration, whose views and comments will be valued by the president.

“Hispanic Vote” (which is not a monolith, you have more of Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Columbian, etc. votes), but due to the fact that he has a strong following in the Tea Party and among non-Tea Party identifying conservatives.

He is sort of like what Dick Nixon was to Ike; a Conservative to anchor conservative support for a more moderate, but accomplished presidential candidate.

  • mikeymike143

of course, my first choice would be a southern conservative like jim demint.

    • tnfriendofcoal101368

to the vest. He has it buried in a bunker under armed guard. I do suspect that Bobby Jindal is the only Southern candidate on the short list which I suspect is Jindal, Pawlenty, Daniels and Ryan. I honestly think that Martinez is the one person if asked for vetting would ask off due to her personal situation with her sister and father. (To be clear this nothing nefarious, Governor Martinez’ father has Alzheimer’s and her sister is developmentally disabled – the Governor is her sister’s legal guardian and she has consistently said she does not want to move her sister to Washington away from famiily).

    • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

Jim Demint isn’t on the list, although I know he is a favorite on RedState. Neither is Martinez.

    • rightlane1111

Martinez’ state is not consider “swing”….Secondly…because having Romney will be like eating rice cakes every day…by that I mean…nerdie…Rubio is an excellent communicator.

This is such an asset for Rubio…on all levels of the intelligence spectrum…everyone gets it. Romney has a tendency to commingle and convolute everything until people do not know which end is up.

I love Jim DeMint…but we have to have a contrast. The media’s latest guess is Pawlenty…and now we have two rice cakes in the WH.

      • mikeymike143

and those are 11 states that romney lost in.

        • tnfriendofcoal101368

He wasn’t asked for any vetting information. It won’t be Rick Santorum. Aside from policy reasons, if you think the Romney campaign is going safe, Santorum is one of the biggest loose cannons in politics. To wit, he was legitimately on the rise with a blue collar message. The speech about his grandfather was one of the best I have ever seen and then a member of the media said the magic word “contraception”. Santorum then took a couple of bazookas and unloaded on both of his own feet. The second reason is the only Republican politician more unpopular than Rick Santorum amongst the little “l” libertarian wing of the party is Ron Paul. When I say Romney is threading the needle with this pick is they will look for someone that all three stools of the Republican Party can at least live with. Santorum is toxic amoung libertarians and fi-cons.

So we get two rice cakes in the White House. Romney could make up for it by making Gingrich his Press Secretary. :)

  • gregorysstewart

Romney has already come out and said that Rubio is being vetted.

That admission says a lot. It means that at a minimum, Rubio has been asked AND has agreed to serve as VP if asked. It means that Rubio has been given and has filled out a lengthy questionnaire and has discussed this questionnaire with a vetting committee. It means that Rubio is on the short list, because the long list goes unvetted.

  • davenj1

Personally, I believe the “Rubio Fully Vetted” stories coming out of the lamestream media is a diversionary ruse being perpetrated on the gullible. If so, then I have more respect for the Romney campaign. I have nothing against Rubio the man, but 2012 is not his time. Yes, he’s of Latino descent, but Cubans have very little in common with Mexicans or other Central/South Americans other than a Spanish surname. Put another way, putting Rubio on the ticket is pandering plain and simple. That would be a bad move by the Romney campaign and I haven’t seen too many missteps thus far. Hopefully, this campaign in earnest will be the anti-McCain.
Furthermore, as I explained in a previous article here, I believed then as I believe now that his choice will be South Dakota Senator John Thune. You heard it here first.

    • rightlane1111

I’d rather have Rubio in there than a faux RINO like Thune.

Concerning you argument about Rubio…I never really looked at him as Hispanic…I just liked what he did for FL and he is the personification of the American Dream…and God do we need to see something like that now in our crappy economy.

When we get into this diversification process…Hispanics, Blacks, Whites, Chinese…we are in the same boat a Obama…the Balkanization of America.

People seem to forget that Obama is HALF White…do you think that 50% bought the White Vote? I don’t.

Dave…Romney needs the SE USA….he needs to balance this out with a true Conservative. People do not like Romney in the SE and he needs to do something about it.

What would Thune bring to the ticket. SD votes Red. What Conservative bills has Thune brought to the table. Fine…sew up the upper USA…meanwhile…forget the South, who, btw are fed up with most of the politicians anyway.

Would Rubio cause controversy because his parents were not US citizens when he was born? I am not asking whether the argument against him has merit or not, just asking if this would create problems for Romney. The same issue arises with Jindal.

Other than this I think either Rubio or Jindal would be an awesome choice. Either one would create some of the excitement that Palin did and yet not be vulnerable to the kinds of media attacks that she was damaged by.

    • rightlane1111

Obama would not be President. His father…FOR SURE was born in Kenya and was NEVER a US citizen.

This is where the Constitution gets fuzzy and I don’t want to get into the birther issue…but you bring up a point that many have asked and nobody has come to any conclusive answer.

      • westcoastpatriette

is that I read that Rubio used to be Mormon and switched to Catholicism — which might created problems for Romney in ways that he would never admit publicly. Can’t remember where I read this or I would link it.

          • westcoastpatriette

and reading that link, I have a hard time imagining “play it safe” Romney picking Rubio as he just has not been vetted enough and he would prove too risky a pick.

          • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

So what? If I remember correctly Clinton and Gore were both Southern Baptists and what did that get us? Anyway, Rubio is Catholic as are most Cuban-Americans. I still haven’t heard one legitimate reason for Romney passing over Rubio for some “boring white guy” and he sure as heck isn’t going to pick a woman, not even Kelly Ayotte.

      • cheetah2

Not that it really is a problem but that it will come up and there is not a clear answer, unless Obama getting elected president despite having a foreign national parent does settle the question.
