Reading the VP tea leaves: Announcement coming soon

The penultimate piece of the VP puzzle is now in place.  At the Olympics today, Ann Romney and Beth Myers watched as Rafalca competed and failed to advance in the horse’s final Olympic event.  The pair will now fly back to Boston, where they will be picked up by limousine and carried to the Romney compound in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.  There will be time for one more round of discussions, but the VP choice was all but decided this past weekend.

On Thursday evening, a charter plane will take off from an undisclosed airport in Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota or New Jersey (your guess is as good as mine) and spirit Romney’s VP candidate to Wolfeboro.

Shortly before noon Friday, Beth Myers will tweet the selection to the thousands of Romney supporters who have installed the Romney VP app on their iphones and androids–just in time for the noon news break on all the major networks.

At noon on Friday, the Romneys and Beth Myers will step in front of the cameras and Mitt will formally introduce his VP nominee.  Just in time to begin the 4 state bus tour of Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio on Saturday through Tuesday.  Caution:  Don’t read anything into the fact the McDonnell will be with Romney in Virginia, Rubio in Florida, and Portman in Ohio.  Of course, they will.

How do I know this?  Well, I just had my afternoon cup of tea (American Classic Governor Grey from the Charleston Tea Plantation in South Carolina).  But, if I’m right, remember you read it here first.  And Chris Stirewalt is all wet.

With the high population of Indians in New Jersey (traditionally vote Democrat, but might vote for Romney with Jindal on the ticket), and if the non-Indian numbers generally mirror the 2004 election between Kerry and Bush, Jindal might bring in New Jersey for Romney better than Christie could.

    • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

You’re for Jindal. I get it. That should make acat and lineholder happy. But, really, asserting that Jindal will carry New Jersey because of the number of Indian-Americans living there is a real stretch. If you’re going the ethnic route then Rubio should be your choice because of the Cuban-American population in Florida, which unlike New Jersey, is a must win state for Romney. At any rate, I stand by my prediction that the announcement will come Friday. And then we’ll all know.

With more than ten days to Tampa…

        • tnfriendofcoal101368

          That is the upside….

        • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

says the pick will be announced on August 24, the Friday before the convention starts. If, however, Romney has already made his decision (and I obviously believe that he has) there is no advantage to be gained in delaying the announcement for two weeks. In fact, both the polls and the Romney Tax Return story that continues to dominate the news (even on Fox) demand an earlier announcement. A Veep announcement this Friday will give the two time to both campaign together (obviously on the 4-day bus tour starting Saturday) and to plan strategy prior to the convention. The Veep choice will take over the news and turn around what has so far been a bad two weeks for the Romney campaign.

          • commonsenseobserver

Since he should be on vacation in Colorado, I believe.

So it’s down to McDonnell, Portman, Jindal, Rubio…

The base will bolt if it’s Portman, but the last two are impressive. McDonnell would be rather appealing to blue-collar social conservatives, but fiscal hawks and libertarians would get a little jumpy. Certainly, it would deprive us of a good Senate candidate against Warner, but there’s little chance of Warner being defeated by McDonnell or anyone anyway.

          • keepcoolwithcoolidge

although I hear that Warner may run for Governor next year since he can’t get anything done in the Senate.

          • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

Not my first choice, but far better than Portman. I do think Thune and Christie are out of the mix, but who knows?

          • tnfriendofcoal101368

I think it is obvious that Obama is trying to make this thing a back alley street fight (I mean they went as far to call Romney a murderer after calling him a tax cheat and a felon). I don’t think that is Romney’s strength or inclination but Christie on the other hand…it might be in this election, Christie is the guy who complements Romney the best (and I’d point out – there is more substance there as well). In addition, all the guys running Romney’s campaign are the same people who ran Christie’s so they know him. I agree I don’t think it will be Christie but I think the last week has made him more likely (of course to be honest – I don’t know a darn thing about Romney’s thinking on this and I don’t think anyone else does either).

          • 6eorge Jetson

That showed terrible judgment and a lack of the right stuff.

Had he stuck around, he would have had his opportunity as the not-Romney of the week.

      • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

I’d also be happy with Ryan. I could live with Rubio, and I say that only because I don’t think he has the necessary experience. He’s a rising star, and if he’s the pick and they lose, it could damage future opportunities.

I wish Fortuno and maybe Martinez were on the short list.

If it’s McDonnell or Thune, I’ll be nauseous. If it’s Portman, well, let’s just not go there.

      • Ability to carry out duties of President — Triple Check

      • Competency Contrast w/ Biden — Triple Check

      • Charisma to win states for Romney — way overrated

A Jindal VP emphasizes Romney’s strength. I had never given Jindal much thought since his underwhelming State of the Union response. He couldn’t run for the Presidency on his own. But he doesn’t have to.

      • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

He’s given better speeches, including the one at RSG04. Here’s a summary with a clip.

        Jindal

  • superpatriot

…does the fact that McDonnell, Rubio, and Portman will be “accompanying” our next president in their respective states mean that they are not gonna be VP??-(sigh…I really liked Rubio)

    • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

As Romney responded when asked if the initial list of convention speakers meant that those individuals weren’t under consideration for VP: “our campaign might engage in some misdirection. The time slot a person is scheduled to speak could change.” Same thing is true for the seating chart on the bus. It would be extremely odd if those individuals weren’t scheduled to be with him in their home states. Also, just because Virginia is the first state up doesn’t mean McDonnell has the “inside track” for VP as some have suggested.

Also–I do know how to spell Beth “Meyers”. The NYTimes got the spelling wrong also.

  • commonsenseobserver

Of being picked if the choice is announced this or next week?

    • tnfriendofcoal101368

I don’t speculate on the VP because I have never been correct.

  • superpatriot

…on Romney’s VP list, according to media sources:

    Rob Portman

    Paul Ryan

    Tim Pawlenty

    • commonsenseobserver

Pawlenty will satisfy the base, Ryan will make everyone swoon, and Portman will make Conservatives groan.

      • mikeymike143

i definately agree with your comments about ryan and portman.

but i still think the choice will be rubio.

        • commonsenseobserver

          Ryan, Jindal, and Rubio.

I’m going with Ryan if he’s the only one on Mitt’s shortlist. Well, he has nice eyes. And I think he’d be a good pick. :P

          • gekster

That in itself will get us a win.
We should go with that, instead of conservative principles.
That will be a sure winner.

          • commonsenseobserver

One thing I’m sure of: none of them is a pathetic liar or fool.

I think I’ve explained my support for Ryan based on his record and vision enough. The remark about his eyes was just a joke. Get over it.

It’s because you don’t read enough that you don’t understand, I guess.

          • gekster

Holy Heaven you are the total idiot.

ps: get out of the basement and interact with real people, not the ones on computer games.

          • commonsenseobserver

That is clear. He is resorting to lies about what I have said, and has spent his time distorting my arguments because he cannot support his own claims.

          • gekster

Reach for the stars. If you miss, settle for the moon.

          • commonsenseobserver

I have explained my comments numerous times, and the evidence bears out my claim. I have staunchly supported Governor Romney on this issue, and I explained my support for him, and I did not label him a homophobe. I merely used online sources to outline his, and my, position. That is clear in the original post which I made, and which I have linked to, and all subsequent comments.

So put up or shut up.

      • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

forget Paul Ryan and pick John Thune.

        • commonsenseobserver

He’s an avid earmarker. Difficult to make Conservatives swoon.

And indies and liberals wouldn’t care.

          • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

And it’s the women’s vote that Romney needs. She also thinks that it’s great that Ann Romney has two Cadillacs, and now she wants me to buy her at least one. Sometimes those of us who are conservatives don’t really understand what really matters to voters.

          • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

We’re smarter than to be turned by a pretty head.

          • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

and the key phrase in your response is “conservative women”. Since Obama already has the stupid, single women’s vote wrapped up, Romney needs a running mate who appeals to the “married women whose husbands are sitting in the recliner, drinking beer and watching tv” vote. They’re the real swing voters. That means Thune, hands down. Although they might settle for Ryan or even Rubio.

          • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

of the men conservative women marry. Smart, funny, hard-working, die for their families type of men. Mine happens to be pretty handsome as well, so my bases are covered in that department.

Politically speaking, Ryan’s budget, Jindal’s education reforms, and Rubio’s ability to articulate conservatism are what make me and the conservative women I know swoon.

          • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

            LOL

          • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

the spouse. You never know when they might be lurking.

          • PowerToThePeople

nothing wrong with a beer and a recliner. My wife still chases me around although I am not sure if it for pleasure or to cause pain.

Now that I think about it, maybe the beer drinking reclining style is not that good of a thing for me.

          • Viet71

Plain talkers, hard hitters, take-no-nothing conservatives.

            Don’t have to name names.

Am talking about those who know the Truth, know ignorance, and can tell the difference.

rwm52, are you swooning yet? I can go on, if you wish.

    • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

than your “media sources”. At least I admit that I don’t have any inside information.

  • http://www.tooncesthecat.wordpress.com tooncesthecat

Karl Rove has announced that Romney’s VP pick could come “as soon as Friday” ( http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/79459.html ). But then, what does Karl Rove know? Guess we’ll see tomorrow.

    • PowerToThePeople

since the announcement did not come today. And tomorrow, should it not come, you could state “The announcement can come as early as Saturday.” Then if Saturday passes, you can state……………well you get the point.

We know the announcement is coming prior to the convention, but anything else is a guess, yours and Karl Roves included. Rove knows no more than anyone else, he is simply guessing. He may guess right, but it would not be that impressive.
