I never thought I’d see the day in my lifetime
To me, East Germany was just a nation behind the Iron Curtain that would always be walled off.
Ronald Reagan saw differently;
Arriving in Berlin on June 12, 1987, President and Mrs. Reagan were taken to the Reichstag, where they viewed the wall from a balcony. Reagan then made his speech at the Brandenburg Gate at 2 PM, in front of two panes of bulletproof glass protecting him from potential snipers in East Berlin. About 45,000 people were in attendance; among the spectators were West German president Richard von Weizsäcker, Chancellor Helmut Kohl, and West Berlin mayor Eberhard Diepgen. That afternoon, Reagan said,
“We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”
Even with Obama building walls in Europe, we celebrate the fall of one;

take me to the magic of yesterday on sad night, where our President didn't apologize...

“The UN is right? you can’t be any more “un”; Than you are right now, the UN is undone, Another mushroom cloud, another smoking gun, The threat is real, the Locust King has come, Don’t tell me the truth; I don’t like what they’ve done, Just give me ammo for the United Abominations”-Megadeth
BTW, those people are fleeing Government Control or "regulation"...

It can be again if we honor his memory.
The_Gadfly Monday, November 9th at 9:53PM EST (link)I’m not really the best person to sub for The Gipper on the uplifting speech front. If I’m not focusing on the empty half of the glass, I tend to be worried about all the things that can go wrong with the other half. But every time we remember the uplifting speeches he did give, and breathe life into them again in our lives, that uplifting spirit lives.
I think it is important to remember that he didn’t really write the line. It was given to him by a woman in a family in Germany he had visited. It struck a cord with him, and he remembered it, then wrote it into the first draft of his speech. From there it went through the first round of revisions under the watchful eye of the professionals, who removed the line. So he wrote it back in. After which it was reviewed again by the professionals at the State Department, who again removed the line. So when it came back to him, he wrote it back in. I believe it was even removed a third time, only to be written in, by Reagan in his own hand on the final copy of the speech he carried with him. And when he stood there making his speech, he delivered it with passion; the passion he felt himself, the passion of the woman who first spoke it to him, and the passion required from the leader of the free world standing by a faithful ally and facing an unyielding foe.
We’ve always swum upstream when defending freedom, even in the glory days. We should expect no less now.
We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

If NY23 was a beat down for Conservatives, what do you call what happened to Progressives in NJ and VA?

that day, night in Germany was awesome, the Gorbasm was a myth...
DONTREADONME Monday, November 9th at 9:39PM EST (link)I was swollen with pride in my chest watching that. I was proud as an American for the Germans that day/evening. I remember us sitting in class 8th grad watching that on broadcast TV. What a beautiful time to be a kid/young adult. Stuff like that should galvanize conservatives. It affected me greatly, it was when I said Reagen was the “MAN”. That was what abandoning detente does, Of course, we all know what caused the collapse of the Soviet Union and it wasn’t a Gorbasm.
