I make no claim to be one of those ‘best and brightest’ in the GOP. so someone will need to explain this to me… use small words as you know I’m a conservative from fly over country. Under the (RCP) headline of:
“GOP, Country Better Off Without Stupid Sarah”
Our friend Peggy Noonan does what I think is a hit piece on Sarah Palin
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124716984620819351.html
I won’t bore you with the pile in deatil… leaving only my question:
Explain to me why WE (conservatives) should always avoid ‘hacking off’ moderates when the moderates of our own party (nominally in) aren’t burdened by the same ‘rules’
Remember… use small words

Because the moderates are people like Peggy Noonan
Vegas_Rick Friday, July 10th at 2:13PM EDT (link)who are deathly afraid of becoming irrelevant if the voters turn back to American values. They know this is a center right country and they fear people like Palin who can give voice to first principles in a way that is attractive to the average voter.
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge.
Peggy Noonan has morphed from brilliant speech writer into
eburke Friday, July 10th at 2:33PM EDT (link)a bitter, jealous media hack who is desperate to curry favor with the Georgetown cocktail circuit because she hasn’t really been relevant for who knows how long. What a disgusting ‘hit’ piece. While I like Sarah, I am not in the camp who believe she’s a female version of The One. However, this POS by Noonan was nothing more than a hate-filled, bitter, personal screed against someone who, apparently, struck some sort of bile-filled nerve of Peg’s.
As to your question - most moderates I know by their nature find some sort of ‘vitrue’ in being more ‘thoughtful’ and ‘reasoned’ in their ‘moderate’ approach to life than the rest of us neandrathal, knuckle-dragging cretins who actually not only have values and core beliefs but actually *cling* to them. Thus, if we get upset with them it’s because we’re just too small-minded, naive, and, well, stupid, to see how reasoned and brilliant they are. When they refuse to support us it’s because, well, they’re just too smart and brilliant to be sucked in to supporting the likes of…….’us’.

nail on the head with bitter and jealous
mom2oneson Friday, July 10th at 3:15PM EDT (link)I can’t believe she even attacked her family??? They are middle class not working class and that is some kind of thing against Palin to say her childhood wasn’t full of enough struggle?

That is why I stopped reading her years ago...
larueladue Friday, July 10th at 2:43PM EDT (link)She evidently lost the ability to think “outside the beltway” a long time ago, making her irrelevant to modern conservative thinking. If I ran the WSJ, I would send her packing (regardless of her past work), as she is now an embarrassement…

Despicable Article
Swamp_Yankee Friday, July 10th at 2:48PM EDT (link)The minute I read it, I started to write a rant of a diary myself tearing her to shreds. She hides behind her writing style and pretends to be deliberative, but her article is rife with catty jealous pot shots. A “bonbon”. She doesnt read?
Disgusting human being.
And there is a difference between percieved elected poltical “moderates” in Blue states and talking heads. I have no patience for this crowd. It not a conservative thing really. Its an elitism thing. The definitive country club conservative.

read Swamp Yankee's article. Very clever, very funny.

Yeah
Swamp_Yankee Friday, July 10th at 6:06PM EDT (link)I’m from Mass. And I’m am familiar with that old Irish wit. You need that as well facts perspective and a leather hide to go to battle up here.
‘m not Irish, but am Catholic and I live in Charlestown now, the green square mile, wall to wall fighting Irish Democrats. You just got to know when to pick your battles.

I became disenchanted with lovely Peggy
David Hinz Friday, July 10th at 3:06PM EDT (link)years ago…
…she speaks into lovely dulcet tones, with only the slightest of upturned nose, as she spouts nonsense that would have gotten her bounced from the Reagan White House post haste.
She is everything we have come to expect from the Old Guard of the Republican Party…
…and she has become as irrelevant as a stale moldy bagel…
…and just as palatable.

Peggy Noonan is a sell-out...
azaeroprof Friday, July 10th at 4:45PM EDT (link)she was clearly not truly grounded in conservatism, as she sold out conservatives as soon as she became infatuated with Barack Obama. I doubt she was every really a conservative, she just started her career in the Reagan era so jumped on the train and rode it until she thought a newer, shinier train was going faster.

Except for one phrase
ZootSuit Friday, July 10th at 5:00PM EDT (link)Except for that bolded phrase, Peggy Noonan is absolutely correct.
Even as someone who has posted above inresponse to this diary once intimated just a day or two before John McCain selected her as his running mate, Sarah Palin does not have heft or gravitas nor does she display a depth of understanding of conservative principles. But that is not the problem. The problem is that many conservatives now want to pretend she does and thus, she is not forced to learn.

sorry I don't get that!

Stupid Sarah??
olsmithie Friday, July 10th at 6:02PM EDT (link)I remember “stupid” Dan Quayle and a host of others that the squishes and the libmedia were afraid of. (remember “potatoe” was printed on answer card.)
Call folks names, the public is too dumb to verify facts and find out they were pretty bright people
I do not get this implication of stupidity from some fronts. Anyone who has heard the lady speak knows she is intelligent, whether they are willing to admit it or not.
There may be several legitimate criticisms of Palin you can reasonably make, but being dumb certainly isn’t one of them.
And tsquare, I agree with you that big words should never be used when a diminutive word will do….

We're all just hicks, yuck, yuck, yuck
lukematthews Friday, July 10th at 8:05PM EDT (link)“Here’s why all this matters. The world is a dangerous place. It has never been more so, or more complicated, more straining of the reasoning powers of those with actual genius and true judgment. This is a time for conservative leaders who know how to think.” Peggy Noonan in her hack piece “A Farewell to Harms”
First, if you want to interpret this drivel, it really says that we average Americans are not smart enough, good enough, or wise enough, to make decisions about our future. Like a classic aristocrat, Noonan believes the entitled, self-described betters need to shepherd the poor, drooling idiots who can barely feed themselves into the future. She doesn’t believe the people can possibly make an appropriate choice. We must be docile enough to hire the brainiacs to tell us how to behave.
Second, she broke Ronald Reagan’s eleventh commandment. Thou shalt not speak ill of fellow Republicans. Reagan would have taken Peggy to the woodshed over this garbage. He would rightly argue it is not the leaders who make America a great country, but her people that make the right choices and sacrifices. He believed in real democracy, not this elect a statesman crap the blue-bloods subscribe to. He believed Americans made America work, not politicians.
