MEMBER DIARY

Open Letter to American Youth (or, You Voted Obama into Office and The Bill is Coming Due)

If you have graduated college within the past three years, about 85% of you have returned home to live with mom and dad. That would be the mom and dad that pay the vast majority of the household bills, and probably in many cases are even making the payments on your student loans.

In point of fact, mom and dad are not only paying the daily living expenses around your place, and likely repaying your student loan, mom and dad are paying the money it takes to run the country as well.  And if mom and dad are “rich”, they’re paying about 70% of those costs.

At some point, you need to come to the realization that mom and dad are not going to be there forever.  Maybe you already have. Once you come to that realization, you are left with the conundrum of figuring out who it is that is going to be doing that paying after they are gone.

I mention this because I’m one of those folks that fall into the ‘mom and dad’ category.  I’m in the group that pays into the 30% of the money that runs the country…… not the 70%.  But I’m reasonably comfortable.  I’m 62.  My wife is a little older. We’re likely only going to be around maybe another 20 years or so at max.  Your parents might have another 40 years.  But there are going to be fewer and fewer of them (the people not only paying the household bills, but paying to run the country) as that 40 years passes.

That means you are going to have to start picking up the slack as those now paying the bills pass on.  Much like your parents did when their parents passed on.  Only it’s not really the same.  See, a bunch of you (the majority of those that voted, in fact) chose to elect a government that pushes entitlements, free lunch whenever possible, and social justice rather than one that chooses fiscal responsibility.  That means the debt you have in fact already inherited is WAY beyond your means if you are going to try to live in the lifestyle to which you have become accustomed……. you know… with occasional free time, too much food, some tech goodies, and maybe even a decent ride.

The vast majority of you are going to end up not only NOT living what we (who did live it) used to call the American Dream, you are going to end up with your lives being one of absolute drudgery just trying to keep up with paying the interest on the debt you now already owe though you may not realize it… right up to the point where your one and only life has been just wasted…… used up… gone…. and not a darned thing you can do about it.

You traded your future for an ideal.  Sold your soul to the devil so to speak.  An ideal that doesn’t work, has never worked (it has been tried hundreds of time throughout history in one fashion or another), can’t work, and never will work.  You traded away a secured future in the ONLY system that has ever worked (capitalism, free enterprise, and the primacy of the individual)….. the one that built this country and gave it its wealth… for a bunch of social baubles and trinkets that will ultimately result in a life of drudgery and economic slavery when there is nobody but you to pick up the tab for it.

You can deny it, make arguments in support of what you bought-into, scream about fairness, and look down condescendingly on those who disagree with you (you know – those rednecks clinging to their guns and Bibles) …. but in the end, it is YOU who is going to be left with the check.  Not me.  And there’s no way you are going to be able to pull me out of my grave to help you pick it up.

Nope. None of the folks now paying for all those things you feel you are entitled-to are going to be here to make those payments.  It’s going all fall to you.  And guess what.  You won’t get to opt out.  Your government (you know… the one you keep empowering to run your lives more and more every day) is going to see to it that you pay “your fair share.”

That’s not a joke, and it’s not a scare tactic.  It’s reality.

I’ve got mine.  I worked hard for it, and earned it a long time ago.  I’m going to live the rest of my life pretty-much the way I want to.  You, on the other hand, are never going to get yours.  Your future was stolen by people that spent it cheaply today…. effectively buying your support with it….and who did so knowing that it was you who were going to have to pick up the tab for that purchase tomorrow.  Not them.  Not the spenders.  Not me.  Not your parents.  You.

So how do you like them now?

I don’t know if it (the American dream for lack of a better term…. actually that one does nicely)can be recovered at this point.  I do know the blood flow can be stanched, at least for the time being.  And I believe it will be (and mostly no thanks to you).  Probably just long enough to get the rest of us who have been paying the bills up to this point through to our ends.

But after we’re gone, I don’t hold a lot of hope for you.  You fell for the promise of a free lunch, and way too many of you still haven’t learned your lesson yet.

That is some powerful truth you tell, enough to give me chills and tears because it’s so scary and I don’t even have kids! Wow!

You said it like a true patriot that you obviously are and with tough love for those just starting out in life. I wish this could get sent to every Facebook page or wherever that the youth will get to read it as they need to realize that we’re almost over the cliff, with just a flimsy branch to hold onto before plunging into the abyss.

I think of all the heros that fought and gave up their lives, like my Navy dad that fought two wars, that sacrificed so much for our freedom that is getting tossed away to some inane ideology like equality for all at the cost of those that work for it daily.

It is so sad where we are and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve teared up when Levin plays “America the Beautiful” by Ray Charles.

Thank you Sir for your honesty, even when young adults don’t want to hear it….but they sure do need to and can learn so much from just your few paragraphs. Bless you :)

True words that every member of my generation needs to take to heart. I just tweeted it!

I don’t have or want a Facebook or Twitter page by choice for privacy reasons but if you can and are able, more power to you.

My Dad, who is 73, said he was happy that he was not going to live long enough to see what was going to happen to this country. I will live long enough to see it, but not long enough to be able do anything about it. My children know what is in store for them but they are too young to vote right now, so my job is to prepare them for what is to come. A grim task.

    Great diary.

  • johngaltwasright

Fabulous insight, and cogently argued. Even a recent college graduate might understand it!

I do hope you can post this in some other places where the young who most need to hear it can do so. I really believe your argument will crush whatever platitudes the few remaining “hope and change”-ers are clinging to in that generation. They aren’t stupid, but they have been very poorly educated.

Hard rain’s gonna fall come November.

I’ve made some calls and done some questions for our local GOP, and here is why some (too many) of those hopey-changey yoots who might flip their votes are still hesitant to press the (R) button this year -

(paraphrased): ‘Well things are bad now, but Romney is gonna make it WORSE, like, take all the government money and give it to the One Percent, like to corporate raiders and Wall Streeters and Big Bankers. After (mommy and daddy paid for) getting my Masters I don’t have a job it’s true; but if I DO get a job while the Repubs are in power, it’ll be minimum wage and no benefits. Plus doncha know that the only ones who will have major medical under Romney will be the RICH???’

And this from kids reporting from *right* leaning households…

I’ve been a fairly consistent (but open-minded) Mitt supporter – note, what some of the teens and 20-somethings, especially the young women, have been parroting about the other GOP candidates has been even more tainted by the Dem’s conservative scare memes – but we can’t take any of our practical, fact- based evidence, so beautifully articulated here, for granted. Romney and our party have a ton of work to do/undo, and we should have started 2 decades ago when these bright eyed learning sponges were in kindergarten. And too bad David Horowitz hasn’t had more support for his College Watch and Academic Freedom projects.

is what you call a Public Service Announcement!

… and I’m still underemployed. I’m graduating in May, I was lucky enough to find a paid internship but after August if I don’t find a job … I don’t even want to think of it.

There’s certainly the kids who believe in the entitlement mentality. But with 53% of my peers that are graduating are either unemployed or underemployed, all of us are being dragged down whether we vote for Obama or not.

    • checkmate2012

you’re at least on this website reading about other possibilities. When you said, “being dragged down whether we vote for Obama or not.” is a defeatist attitude. As in it does make a difference this time around.

I’ll give you that the diff in parties isn’t always clear, but this time it is crystal clear and it will affect y’alls future more than you know.

Do the right thing as it will get way worse if BO is re-elected.

    • UpLateAgain

In writing this diary I was hoping that people who heretofore had supported the entitlement society might develop some insight. Even those who had not, but were of the next generation, could have it brought to their attention that reality (as opposed to ideology) matters, and needs to be proffered, and they could thus help spread the word.

Attitudes change one mind at a time.

      • funwithknives

that is used to force the a mind’s eye open, it’s always a good day when you see the particular one you thought would work ,really does.
To : ‘zachv’. Sir: Unfortunate you are ,but it’s been a long time coming to get to this. Musical chairs time is over. Your story and countless thousands of others [like mine, for instance] repeat a common theme.
Barry is One Lost Puppy and will not admit he’s wrong, incorrect ,a rank beginner. The people of which I speak are the economic walking wounded and resent this very apparent lack of leadership and obvious narcissism, coming from this Administration.

He promised ‘change’ and though we got that item, it’s form and function was not in much demand, now was it?
It’s gonna take a while, as it took a while to get where we are.
First and foremost, we all need some confidence in what we anticipate.

An old blues standard goes: “I’ve been down so long, it looks like UP to me….”
Anyone for a shining city on a hill, right about now….?

  • demsaresatanic

even 20 years left for anything resembling the American Dream. The drift to a Third-World status is inevitable given the massive levels of Third-World immigration. Race and culture will always trump the other factors in my view.

    • rightlane1111

concerning race and culture….it has to do with loss of our Constitution, loss of our morality…this is why our country is going down. Those darned old Seven Deadly Sins…

Pride Anger Greed Gluttony Lust Envy and Sloth

Now…just concentrate on those and see how our government, their officials and our society have fell victim to each and every one of them.

America puts its head in the sand…and thinks of the three monkeys…I speak no evil, see no evil, hear no evil.

Isn’t that the best way to be irresponsible?

  • http://nextgenerationvoters.com Bethany

My generation needs to see this!!

  • jdaman

And I am proud to say that I did NOT vote for Obama, I voted for McCain!
I concur with everything you say here. It’s alarming just how narrow-minded and left leaning most college students are. They are, as you said, trading their souls and futures to to the devil for an ideal.

  • Vegas_Rick

I hope this gets picked up for wider distribution. I’ll forward to everyone I can. You realy nailed it.

    • checkmate2012

Spread the word for sure. I’ll add that this entire mess isn’t all BO’s fault as you’ll hear from friends. It’s been years of irresponsiblity on everyone’s part, including the voters for not holding our politicians in check as my younger sister pointed out last night.

Obama is excelerating our downfall faster than any administration that I can remember; mostly the country’s debt, which will fall on your shoulders in the end. And along the way, he is definitely shredding our Constitution that governs the freedoms we all enjoy and we can’t borrow money from China to fix our fall from grace.
