Suzanne Haik Terrell is considering a challenge David Vitter in the Republican primary for US Senate next year.

Vitter has kept a high profile among congressional Republicans with his opposition to key Obama appointees, most notably Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and FEMA Director Craig Fugate.

Vitter’s stance on the Fugate nomination is leading GOP members to consider challenging him in the primary. Last week, Suzanne Haik Terrell, former New Orleans councilwoman and state elections commissioner, confirmed her interest. She ran for Senate in 2002, losing a close race to Mary Landrieu. Starting in October 2005, she served a three-year stint in the U.S. Commerce Department, specializing in economic development.

If she decides to run, Terrell would be a very formidable opponent for Vitter. She is the only Republican woman to ever win statewide office in Louisiana, and she has strong support from a range of Republican activists in the state.Women compose a majority of the Republican voters in Louisiana, and Terrell might be seen as a more palatable candidate than Vitter.

Terrell ran a strong race against an incumbent Mary Landrieu, ultimately losing 52-48. She is well known in the New Orleans area, but with family roots in New Iberia, ran strong in SW Louisiana as well.
