Movin’ On Up (To The Big House): Four Members of Jefferson Clan Indicted on RICO Charges
Another Saturday, another set of indictments against corrupt New Orleans-area Democrats.
First, it was a judge in St. Bernard Parish. Then it was a corrupt city councilman in Gretna.
Now, US Attorney Jim Letten brings a 75-page RICO indictment down on four members of the extended clan of former Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) (IN HIS FREEZER!), who himself will soon to stand trial on 16 counts of bribery and public corruption while a member of Congress.
[As previously noted, Letten's reappointment has the support of both Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) and Sen. David Vitter (R). Letten, a Republican, served 8 years under President Bush. It remains to be seen whether President Obama will retain Mr. Letten, or will follow his Chicago instincts and replace him with a reliable Dem hack. In this case, we need to HOPE for NO CHANGE.]
The four members of the clan subject to this new indicment have previously been charged with crimes; it’s the racketeering charges that are new. Those named in the RICO indicment include:
- Mose Jefferson, the former Congressman’s older brother
- Renee Gill-Pratt, Mose’s girlfriend and former New Orleans City Council member
- Betty Jefferson, sister of Mose and Bill, and former Orleans Parish assessor
- Angela Coleman, Betty’s daughter
Remember that sister Brenda Jefferson copped a plea to avoid prosecution.
