Live Near A Wind Farm? You May Suffer From Wind Turbine Syndrome

Health Threat Pooh-poohed by Government, Big Wind

A soon-to-be released study of the health effects of living near wind turbines challenges the popular image of the graceful, benign windmill gently coaxing free megawatts from the passing zephyrs.

Dr. Nina Pierpont, a New York pediatrician, has studied subjects who live near windmills in the U.S., the U.K., Italy, Ireland and Canada for the last five years. She concludes that some, but not all, of the near-windmill dwellers show signs of a newly-identified health risk which she calls Wind Turbine Syndrome, or WTS.

Are wind farms a health risk? US scientist identifies ‘wind turbine syndrome’

[WTS] is the disruption or abnormal stimulation of the inner ear’s vestibular system by turbine infrasound and low-frequency noise, the most distinctive feature of which is a group of symptoms which she calls visceral vibratory vestibular disturbance, or VVVD*. They cause problems ranging from internal pulsation, quivering, nervousness, fear, a compulsion to flee, chest tightness and tachycardia – increased heart rate.** Turbine noise can also trigger nightmares and other disorders in children as well as harm cognitive development in the young, she claims.

*[A girl I dated once told me she had VVVD. She stuttered, too.]

**[I experienced symptoms of WTS during Obama's last televised press conference. Memo to self: Search for nearby wind turbine.]

Of course, the reaction of the U.K. Government and “Big Wind” are all too predictable:

Until now, the Government and the wind companies have denied any health risks associated with the powerful noises and vibrations emitted by wind turbines. Acoustic engineers working for the wind energy companies and the Government say that aerodynamic noise produced by turbines pose no risk to health…

[Dr. Pierpont:] “The wind industry will try to discredit me and disparage me, but I can cope with that. This is not unlike the tobacco industry dismissing health issues from smoking. The wind industry, however, is not composed of clinicians, nor is it made up of people suffering from wind turbines.”…

Dr. Pierpont added that the wind turbine companies constantly argue that the health problems are “imaginary, psychosomatic or malingering”. But she said their claims are “rubbish” and that medical evidence supports that the reported symptoms are real.

At the heart of Dr. Pierpont’s findings is that humans are affected by low-frequency noise and vibrations from wind turbines through their ear bones, rather like fish and other amphibians. That humans have the same sensitivity as fish is based on new discoveries made by scientists at Manchester University and New South Wales last year. …

[Portuguese doctors found that low-frequency noise] exposure may also cause the rare illness, vibroacoustic disorder or VAD, which causes changes to the structure of certain organs such as the heart and lungs and may well be caused by vibrations from turbines. Another powerful side effect of turbines is the impact which the light thrown off the blades – known as flicker – has on people who suffer from migraines and epilepsy.

Is Dr. Pierpont just another anti-Big Wind eco-nut? Not according to Dr. Christopher Hanning, founder of the British Sleep Society:

“Dr Pierpont’s detailed recording of the harm caused by wind turbine noise will lay firm foundations for future research. It should be required reading for all planners considering wind farms. Like so many earlier medical pioneers exposing the weaknesses of current orthodoxy, Dr Pierpont has been subject to much denigration and criticism and … it is tribute to her strength of character and conviction that this important book is going to reach publication.” [ellipsis in original]

My vestigal amphibian ear bones are picking up a low-frequency vibration or two about wind turbines. They’re telling me I don’t want to live near a wind farm: Not In My Back Yard! (Or in the South 40, for that matter!)

How can we be sure that the Obama Administration is not in the hip-pocket of Big Wind in their push for renewable energy?

Oh, wait! Maybe it’s vice-versa…

I personally class windmills just above unicorn oil as an effective power generation method, but in all honesty, these sorts of studies are as specious as the “health” arguments the greenies use to block major transmission lines.

Study a large enough sample, and you’re bound to encounter a few with all sorts of unexplained (and typically imagined) maldies. Load the questions right and ask them in the right tone of voice, and you can just about guarantee yourself a statistical blip. If you’re on the right left side of God, the news media will happily (and unquestioningly) hammer this “fact” into the populace until the Certainty of Dire Health Risks becomes just another part of “common knowledge”. Don’t beleive me? Just check out the science behind the “dangers” of second-hand smoke and trans-fats or the “benefits” of green tea.

If you pay attention to every health risk claim that comes down the pike, you’ll eventually starve yourself to death while hiding under the eiderdown.

But no more specious than the argument that has kept new nuclear power plants off the drawing boards for 30 years.

No more specious than the hysteria that had us spend untold $billions unnecessarily ripping inert asbestos out of every school.

No more specious than alar on apples or sick building syndrome.

And the response of the wind industry is priceless. If you didn’t know their motives were pure, you’d think they were real villians like the oil companies.

I simply don’t want to be part of piling onto that “news that could save your life” mentality. The fact that wind power is a pig in a poke (brought to you by G,E.!) meant to asuage fears of non-existant Global Climate Change (brought to you by G.E. Al Gore!) should be enough to shut them down.

Doesn’t anyone think about the birds?

I can’t wait for these studies to come out. They’ve been bottled up for too long, and it’s not healthy. Soon, we will break Big Wind. The relief will be great indeed, even though as always some will complain of a malodorous air.

is that the greenies usually only go after the energy sources that can actually produce economical energy. Now they are going after the marginal players. i gues we’ll soon see a study that ‘proves” that the solar energy absorbed by solar panels is contributing to “global warning” and that pixie dust and unicorn farts cause cancer.

I just created a Facebook page on Wind Turbine Syndrome. Go to this link and become a “fan”!!

If I get enough “fans,” I might actually start experiencing WTS symptoms.

Yes, wind turbines are truly turning rural America into slums.

Yes, sound can be heard and can be felt. Much to the detriment of those forced to live in these monsters shadow.

Yes, once up many neighbors desire to move because of the ill heath these turbines cause but NO ONE will buy their homes.

Yes, the government is in bed with the wind industry and we are all paying a very high price in higher electric rates and tax subsidies for very little benefit. Industrial turbines produce only about 20% of name plate. And the poor souls living next door are truly suffering.

Yes, Wisconsin is now in the process of taking away local control for siting these wind facilities and giving it to the PSC who works for a liberal and may I say corrupt Governor and sides with the wind industry.

I have heart palpitations, a desire to flee, tighteness in my chest, anxiety and fear whenever I hear Obama is set to announce a new plan to “save America.”

How close were the affected people living to the turbines? 10 feet or 10 miles? What was the frequency observed being emitted from the turbines? Infrasound is known to affect people but frequency and proximity are major factors.

When Trisha Godfrey bought her dream home she never imagined this.

Sixty-five turbines in her view, some just eight-hundred metres away.

Since they’ve been operating she’s had trouble sleeping and suffered constant headaches and nausea.

“All I know is before the wind turbines went on I was okay and now I’m not. And the more that’s coming on I’m feeling sicker all the time,” said Waubra resident Patricia Godfrey.

“You just want to walk away from the place. You don’t feel comfortable. You just don’t feel well,” said Noel Dean.

Neighbour Noel Dean’s been monitoring low frequency infrasound he thinks could be causing the problems.

He’s detected noise below twenty hertz, inaudible to humans, but at volumes up to eighty decibels: the equivalent of a freight train passing the house.

University of Ballarat researchers will test sites around Waubra.

They say the noise can make people sick.

“It has similar symptoms to that of electromagnetic fields. So people who are sensitive to electromagnetic fields can also exhibit the same problems with infrasound,” said Graeme Hood.

Waubra residents say they’re also concerned about the impact windfarms are having on other communites. At Lal Lal and Mount Mercer turbines are even more powerful and closer to homes.

      Another windfarm’s proposed for Evansford.

      People there are also worried.

“It’s not sustainable if people are going to get sick,” said Evansford resident Bernie Janssen.

While others have already moved, Trisha Godfrey’s staying in Waubra for now.

She says she has no choice.

“Somebody comes up our driveway, they’re not going to want to buy our house. There’s no way. And it just breaks my heart. It’s not right,” said Trish Godfrey.

      here.

Note that these folks aren’t necessarily anti-wind energy, they just think it needs more study & needs to be taken into account in designing projects.

They recommend people live 1.5 to 2.0 km (0.9 mi to 1.25 mi) way from a working turbine.
