The Insanity of ‘Zero Tolerance’

Expelled student plans future — Baton Rouge, LA

Is it asking too much to expect “professional educators” to exercise just a tiny amount of judgment and common sense in the administration of anti-weapons policies?

In this case, the knife was a present from his dad with the words “To Luke, always know that I love you” engraved upon it.

The 17-year-old said he used the knife at his dad’s landscaping business on weekends and after school to open bags of seed and fertilizer.

He said he considers it a tool, not a weapon, and forgot he even had it when Woodlawn High’s principal asked to search his car. …

The student apparently had no previous discipline problems. Simpson’s mother said Luke had a 3.3 grade-point average at the time of his expulsion. In her written appeal, Simpson’s mother included notes from teachers commending Luke for being a well-behaved student who did his assignments.

Not too long ago there was the case up in the midwest or northeast where some kid said one was carrying a knife at school. It turns out he had a boy scout knife or something in his car that he didn’t even realize. Never had it in the school.

You also see it where a girl brings a midol to school and gets treated like she’s a drug dealer. Stupid.

If you allow any discretion, then the question becomes was the kid a member of some protected class? The kid was black, therefore you searched him because he was black. Then you get into the statistical battles about how many black kids you’ve searched for weapons versus how many white kids – and all the other permutations of that syllogism. Black, female, API, Indian, disabled, religious, irreligious, pregnant, married? I can go on awhile.

Right now, I have a problem with

    1. the parents not doing their due dilligence and ramming home that public schools will SEARCH for causes to expell, therefore, no gun, no little pocket knife, no cigarettes, nada.

    2. they let the kid stew in alternative for 2 whole months.

I would have been knocking on the door of every school board member, then speaking on talk radio the first week IF I thought he should stay in public school.

This is public school, folks. They’re basterds, the lot of them. We are already put on the defense on many, many things besides religion.

It’s not enough to teach our kids to do their work and “play nice.”

CYA, 110%, and don’t mess up. Here are the ground rules, it’s mean out there.

THEN prepare them for college hijinks 2-3 years in advance.

Knowledge is protection, that’s how we play it at home.
