The winter of 2009–2010 in the United Kingdom (also called The Big Freeze by British media) is an ongoing meteorological event that started on 10 December 2009, as part of the severe winter weather in Europe. A persistent pattern of cold northerly and easterly winds brought cold moist air to the United Kingdom with many snow showers, fronts and polar lows bringing snowy weather with it. The winter weather brought widespread transport disruption, school closures, power failures, caused sporting events to be postponed and 25 deaths.

Wind farms produced ‘practically no electricity’ during Britain’s cold snap

The cold weather has been accompanied by high pressure and a lack of wind, which meant that only 0.2% of a possible 5% of the UK’s energy was generated by wind turbines over the last few days.

In Britain, the tradition of the “stiff upper lip” means you find a solution, even if that lip is stiff on account of being frozen. To wit:


Reports Of Elderly Burning Books To Stay Warm

Temperatures this week are forecast to plummet as low as -13ºC in the Scottish Highlands, with the mercury falling to -6ºC in London, -5ºC in Birmingham and -7ºC in Manchester as one of the coldest winters in years continues to bite.

Workers at one charity shop in Swansea, in south Wales, described how the most vulnerable shoppers were seeking out thick books such as encyclopaedias for a few pence because they were cheaper than coal.

    As many times as I have been to Europe and had to listen to all the Klima Wandel crap, it is gratifying to see them getting an object lesson in the fallacy of climate change theories. But if the IPCC said it, it must be true!

      ..of epic proportions. SuperFund would have to be called in to clean up all that grease that will be rendered from Al’s…..well you get the picture. Of course we could always work out how much bio-diesel could be made from Al’s rendering….might be profitable..Have to get back to you on that one.

    Snowy Mountains

    It may be hard to tell but off in the distance are some really, really white mountains. That’s San Gorgonio Mountain and surrounding peaks, I believe.

    When it’s *cold*, if you’re *lucky* the highest peaks out there will get a bit white at the top. It’s *rare* that they’re entirely covered, snowing as low as Yucaipa.

    I have to think it very nearly snowed where I live, and it’s snowed in Moreno Valley I think twice in the last 20 years.

    Far as I’m concerned though, if one accepts the premise that global warming is real and it’s caused by 100 years of industrial activity and an extra 5 billion people on the planet, then the logical way to reverse it is to go back to being an agrarian society, kill 5 billion people, and wait and see if it makes a difference.

    I believe it makes more sense to wait and see and figure out a way to adapt if it is indeed real.

    We’ve seen the graphs. Even if the data has been tinkered with, even if the numbers are exaggerated, even if there is no proven causation between global warming and fossil energy, it’s warmer, right? Not so fast.Climategate hasn’t even finished warming up yet (no pun), and a story is breaking over at NOAA and NASA/GISS about some serious data tampering. It seems the people in charge of collecting the tempurature readings reduced the surface station sampling by 75% from the late 1970s to 1990. Interestingly, the selected stations tended to be in warmer climates. Add in some new math and, voila, global warming.?         and there are also others. A well respected Climatologist from the University of Colorado has said that “Climategate USA” is going to hit the news big time over the next few weeks. Seems that the UN is quietly trying to back away from the Global Warming bunk. They should have been a whole lot more honest about the lies before Copenhagen. The debacle in Copenhagen took the UN down more than a few pegs, as to their credibility. Unfortunately, Obama is turning the US over to this corrupt worldwide socialist organization, whose only goal is to bankrupt the world so that they then can redistribute the wealth back into their own pockets. The UN and the IPCC are as useless as The League of Nations.

          Useless may accurately describe the League of Nations, but by design, the United Nations and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are fraudulent, corrupt and destructive organizations.

          On another pressing note: Regarding anthropogenic global warming, CO2 regulation and the routine fraud, manipulation and deceit conducted over the past three decades by agencies of the federal government, it’s time to petition SCOTUS to set aside, or reverse, their ruling in Massachusetts v. EPA, No. 05-1120.

            Murkowski(R-AK) on thursday announced that she wants an up or down vote on the EPA endangerment finding. It’s highly unlikely to become law, no real hopes on that right now, but the disappointing thing here is the tone from the republicans. They still sound like AGW is a real problem that needs solving…with market based solutions, of course. This kind of posturing is not going to get them back into power. Republicans need to tell the voters, in no uncertain terms, AGW is a fraud and they intend to end it’s reign as an instrument of policy. See video below. Great post izoneguy. Bloom gets it. Every republican in DC should get a link to this clip and loop it until it’s burned into the backs of their skulls.

    Weeks of below average temps means nothing to the Climate-gate deniers but let the temps hit 50 one day and they are out in force spewing global warming trash.

    had temps in the low 20′s for almost a week. We also had snow, ice, and sleet. We were ALL wishing for some of that global warming when the rug was pulled out from under our normal warmer temperatures. I looked like the Michelin Man with all the clothes I was wearing trying to stay warm.

However, corporate and governmental policies based on this falacious theory are still in place.     Claim that more hurricanes and storms would happen around the world due to AGW was based on unpublished comment someone picked up and ran with. Article references scientists who warned IPCC the claim was no good. This one claim was basis for which $100 billion was demanded from so-called rich nations in Copenhagen to be given to poor ones (article). Also
    quotes Obama making statement based on this false claim, when he said the world will be having more storms. Gordon Brown and Miliband quoted in article making specific catastrophic predictions based on the false claim. Based on this claim, Hillary Clinton said the US would contribute to the $100 billion fund (apparently agreeing with false claim that things like auto emissions caused Bangldesh’s climate). Obama in a 1/14 Guardian story appears to be distancing himself from the UN already. 2 things need to happen now: Al Gore’s movie must be removed from schools. The Supreme Court now has grounds to reverse the decision that CO2 is a dangerous pollutant. Obama has made claims that climate is a national security matter, so that is obviously now false.
